Places to see in ( St. Andrews - UK )
Places to see in ( St. Andrews - UK )
St. Andrews is a seaside town northeast of Edinburgh, on Scotland’s east coast. It's known for its many golf courses, including the Old Course, with the landmark Swilcan Bridge at the 18th hole. The British Golf Museum chronicles the history of U.K. golf. On a headland nearby are the ruins of St. Andrews Castle, with its medieval bottle dungeon. Close to the castle is the University of St. Andrews, founded in 1413.
St. Andrews is a town on the east coast of Fife in Scotland, 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Dundee and 30 miles (50 km) northeast of Edinburgh. The town of St. Andrews is home to the University of St Andrews, the third oldest university in the English-speaking world and the oldest in Scotland. According to some rankings, it is ranked as the third best university in the United Kingdom, behind Oxbridge.
St. Andrews is named after Saint Andrew the Apostle. There has been an important church in St Andrews since at least the 8th century, and a bishopric since at least the 11th century . The settlement grew to the west of St Andrews cathedral with the southern side of the Scores to the north and the Kinness burn to the south. The burgh soon became the ecclesiastical capital of Scotland, a position which was held until the Scottish Reformation. The famous cathedral, the largest in Scotland, now lies in ruins.
St Andrews is also known worldwide as the home of golf. This is in part because the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, founded in 1754, exercises legislative authority over the game worldwide (except in the United States and Mexico), and also because the famous links (acquired by the town in 1894) is the most frequent venue for The Open Championship, the oldest of golf's four major championships.
Visitors travel to St Andrews in great numbers for several courses ranked amongst the finest in the world, as well as for the sandy beaches. The Martyrs Memorial, erected to the honour of Patrick Hamilton, George Wishart, and other martyrs of the Reformation epoch, stands at the west end of the Scores on a cliff overlooking the sea.

The park has been operational for more than fifty years after the Melville family sold the house and grounds to Fife County Council.
The Friends of Craigtoun Country Park was formed in 2012 following discussions with Fife Council. Members now run all of the facilities and help maintain the grounds.
Families can enjoy a pedalo ride on the lake, take a trip with Puffin’ Billy or jump on the bouncy castle. The park is also home to a putting green.
For those who wish to take it a bit easier, The Craigtoun Café serves hot meals, snacks, cakes and healthy fresh fruit smoothies. Ice cream stalls and snack points operate around the adventure playpark during the warmer months. Craigtoun is also a popular destination for birthday parties and group celebrations.
Thanks to grants from Fife Council, The Friends of Craigtoun Country Park will complete a refurbishment of the Rio Grande miniature railway this year. A new free to use ‘Trim Trail with zip wires’ will also be installed.
Here’s a flavour of what some of the visitors to Craigtoun Country Park had to say about the attraction:
“A beautiful park and lots for the children to do”

The Parkrun Demons Are Dead!
It was back to St Andrews for this week’s 5km parkrun. Last week, Malcolm made the trip north to the fair City of Perth. At St Andrews, the run consists of 3 full laps of Craigtoun Country Park and one partial lap. Perth was a simple out and back route.
The motive for going to Perth was to see whether the ‘demons’ that had been plaguing the St Andrews runs would follow him or whether they would be left behind. Diet, rest and other factors had been modified in recent weeks, with no reduction in the problems of feeling tired and needing to stop for walks several times. So did it work? Quite simply, a resounding “YES”.
Coming back to Craigtoun Park, his time was back to the 25 minute bracket – 25:16 to be precise. No significant problems, no real fatigue, and – most important of all – no stopping to walk.
The real question is whether, having had a change of venue last week, the demons of Craigtoun Park have been zapped forever. Hopefully yes, but it’s really too early to say for sure. The real test will be next week. If they stay away then, they should be gone for good!
--------------------------------
Malcolm is a 59 year old who lives in the east of Scotland, near Edinburgh and St Andrews. He used to run in his twenties but gave it up when his family came along. Thirty years later, he had lost his fitness, gained a lot of weight and was on medication for high blood pressure. Deciding to take control again, he started to count his calories, and picked up the running bug again.
He now leads a jogscotland group and helps organise Falkland Trail Runners. He also runs with “Leven Las Vegas”. If all that wasn’t enough of a challenge, he’s decided that he’ll celebrate turning 60 years of age by running his first ever marathon!
The series covers topics such as
• diet and nutrition for older runners
• podiatry, footwear and keeping your feet in top condition
• physiotherapy and other ways to treat aches, pains and injuries
• training techniques for late middle age
• heart rate, lactate level and other factors for endurance running
• effective warmup and cool down regimes for older people
• running economy and using active recovery to run farther with less effort
• avoiding injury with proper running form
These are explained from a perspective of practical experience and personal research. With luck, the channel will also include contributions from sports scientists and health professionals with an understanding of exercise in later years.
