Hiking through a Lava Tube - Craters of the Moon National Monument - Arco, Idaho
The Craters of the Moon/Arco KOA was the perfect home base for exploring the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. We had no idea what to expect, but we were blown away by the unique landscape and awesome hiking trails in this area. Both kids loved having the freedom to explore the cinder cones and lava fields. I'd highly recommend this stop next time you are passing through Idaho.

Craters of the Moon National Monument - Idaho
08/06/14
Craters of the Moon National Monument is located about 18 miles south west of the town of Arco. It is a preserved area representing a massive lava field from flows that originated from the Great Rift approximately 15,000 years ago. President Calvin Coolidge used the 1906 Antiquities Act to proclaim Craters of the Moon National Monument a weird and scenic landscape, peculiar to itself.
We stopped there on our way to the campground in Arco and took a quick peek and then the next day when we visited, we dodged rain and sketchy weather all day so the videos are a bit washed out. It's a very surreal place with one giant cinder cone providing a view covering dozens of miles (quesstimate on my part).

Craters of the Moon National Monument, ID
MC Travelers visited the Moon in Arco, ID. We'll we didn't actually go to the Moon, but we were pretty close. Craters of the Moon National Monument is a beautiful park full of ancient lava rocks, and by ancient I mean millions of years old. There's trails and hikes just off the paved roads, not to mention Caves to explore! Unfortunately our GPS took us for a rocky start, but all in all we had a great time.

Craters Of The Moon National Monument - Fun in Caves!
In today's video, we head over from our free camping spot at the Hayspur Fish Hatchery to Craters of the Moon National Monument. We head to the Visitor's Center first to get our free cave permit (so we don't bring anything in that might harm the bats). The landscape there was otherworldly for sure. The lava cascades were amazing and very harsh. We did the cave hike and climbed down into 3 of the 4 caves and had absolutely a blast doing it. If you are in this area of Idaho, this is definitely worth a stop!

An experiment in Arco Idaho that changed the world forever
ARCO - On a cold winter day in 1951, Walter Zinn and a group of scientists met in a small nuclear reactor 50 miles west of Idaho Falls to conduct an experiment that would change the modern world forever.
It was five days before Christmas, and Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union were at their height.
At that time, the Soviets claimed everything the United States (did with nuclear power) was about weapons. We didn't have a peaceful bone in our bodies, INL spokesman Don Miley says of the Soviet's mentality.
But this experiment would prove that the U.S. was about more than nuclear weapons and that atomic energy could be used for peaceful means.
That day, Zinn and his group of scientists conducted the world's first usable electricity generated by a nuclear reactor.
They lit four light bulbs, and the next day, lit the entire building, says Miley.
That's the story behind Experimental Breeder Reactor I, the first nuclear reactor built in Idaho on the National Reactor Testing Site. NRTS is the predecessor to what we know today as Idaho National Laboratories.
Testing at EBR-I confirmed that a reactor could create more fuel than it consumes and it paved the way for an even bigger scientific breakthrough with a different reactor four years later.
In July of 1955, another group of scientists attempted to use nuclear energy to power an entire town.
They tied the generator into the power grid and flipped a switch. They were not in phase with the utility and fried seven miles of power lines, says Miley.
They tried it again several days later, and this time they succeeded.
One or two nights later, they made sure they were in phase with the power company, switched over to BORAX-III, and for an hour in the middle of the night, they lit our central facilities area and Arco, Idaho.
Arco, located 20 miles northwest of EBR-I, became the first city in the world lit by atomic power on July 17, 1955.

Craters of the Moon | Central Idaho (Vlog)
Craters of the Moon National Monument. Spatter cones, lava bombs, cinder gardens, are we in a Star Trek movie? What crazy alien landscape is this? Did we wake up on some volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean? Nope. This is Craters of the Moon in central Idaho. A place right out of science fiction. Even the closest town of Arco has sci fi trivia attached to it as the first community in the world ever to be lit solely by nuclear power. This strange landscape is made up of three young lava fields ranging in age from 2,000 to 15,000 years old. Deemed a National Monument in 1924 by Calvin Coolidge these lava fields are a can’t miss for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
At first glance this black rock may look like a desolate wasteland, but Craters of the Moon is a fascinating place to explore with plenty to see and do. The park offers you a number of trails to hike, great camping and RV accommodations, night photography opportunities, and family spelunking adventures. Whether you have an hour, a day, or a week to explore this area, Craters of the Moon has something for you to do and should not be missed on your epic Idaho road trip.
