BUSINESS LEADERS DISCUSS NATIONAL CIDER FESTIVAL
PLANS to create a National Cider Festival have stepped up a notch this week, when a group of business leaders from across the South West-met at the Creative Innovation Centre in the heart of Taunton - to discuss organising a showcase for 2019.
Organisers are looking to mimic Spain’s hugely successful Gijon cider event in Northern Spain, said Trade Expert Linda Middleton-Jones.
Miss Jones, said: “We discussed options around the heritage of cider, export opportunities, and especially supporting UK small producers to give them a bigger shop window on the national stage.”
“The event will showcase apples, and promoting our finest brands with Plymouth, Taunton, and Bristol all interested in showcasing the UK’s first ever National Cider Festival,” she said.
“We have a lot of interest from British cider producers and manufacturers, and a leading bank is interested in supporting a business fact finding mission to Gijon next year to help kick-start the project for the Summer of 2019.
International trade expert Linda Middleton-Jones coordinated the meeting in Taunton with plans for a bigger expression of interest seminar in the New Year, she said.
The Natural Cider of Gijon festival has been staged in the largest city of Asturias for many decades, and features extensive programme of activities including art and craft manufacturers, apple markets, cider buses, competitions, music, food tasting, theatre, cider cellars.

Folk Music Nights at CICCIC Featuring Highway Home (song 2)
Performing at Creative Innovation Centre CIC (CICCIC) at Folk Music Nights featuring Highway Home.
The Highway Home bring lively, contemporary arrangements to traditional tunes of the folk/roots/Celtic variety, as well as challenging themselves with ambitious compositions and a few songs (from various centuries!) thrown into the mix.
Iona has been playing violin since the tender age of 3, and has spent the last few years expanding her musical horizons, adding a professional-standard symphony orchestra to her list of projects. Having grown up on the folk music of England, Ireland and Norway, it’s fair to say she has an eclectic repertoire up her sleeve. A fan of playing at supersonic speed wherever possible, she is bringing something very exciting to the next generation of folk music.
Aislinn has spent her whole life searching for her perfect instrument, going through clarinet, flute, piano and guitar, before finally falling in love with mandolin after being lent one at Towersey Folk Festival in 2011. She now spends her time running before she can walk in all aspects of playing, and enjoys writing music so complex that no one (herself included) can play it.
Rohan has been playing guitar for more than 10 years, and has now amassed an unnecessarily large collection of instruments which is still always one short. Originally a percussionist, he now gets his kicks out of groovy riffs and throwing in the occasional bit of overdrive.
