Crediton Christmas Tree Festival 2017
From sausages to Disney’s Frozen, there is a tree for everybody at this year’s Crediton Christmas Tree Festival.
Organisers expect around 4000 visitors to come and look at the 76 trees at the event held from Thursday 7 to Sunday, December 11 at Crediton Church. The event also helps celebrate the town’s historic links with how Christmas trees came to represent the festive season.
Stella Stephens, organiser of the event explained: “The story of Christmas trees is about Boniface. Saint Boniface was born here in Crediton, and he chopped down an oak which was a Pagan idol and out from the ground of that oak came the first Christmas tree pointing towards heaven.”
Stella added that all the displays were created from groups in the town, from Scouts, schools, swimming clubs, the town’s twinning, the choir and more.
“It’s amazing, but I’ve already started for next year,” she said. “I’ve got 20 trees booked for 2018 by organisations which couldn’t get a tree this year. There is always a rolling stock of community groups, companies, children’s groups, schools playgrounds and everything around Crediton wanting to take part.
“Everyone wants to see what the children have been up to and what they have created and it’s all about Christmas.”
Rector of Crediton, Nigel Guthrie said the church provided an idyllic space for the festival.
He said: “With its long naves and aisle it really lends itself to the festival, especially when the light dims in the evening so you can see the twinkling lights down the full length of the church. It is magical, and people like to come and share in that.
“We’ve been going for many years now, and it’s become an established part of our calendar here in the parish. It’s fantastic to see all the trees decorated now and to see the wonderful crafts and effort that people have put into their different trees, representing their organisations and things they really care about and do all year long.
“I hope visitors get a sense of the beauty and sacredness of this church, but also the sense of the liveliness of the community which we are set in and the wonderful community groups who contribute to this festival.”
At the heart of the festival, a tree measuring up to more than 25ft high.
Joe Ward, a choir member and governor of the church had the responsibility of decorating the beautiful beast of a tree. He said: “We get up there on a scaffolding tower which we brace off at the bottom, so it doesn’t fall down. You get used to it quite quickly, and it isn’t that frightening, but you have to reach out, get all the tinsel and the Lametta which is a wonderful thing.
“If anybody knows where you can get Lametta around a metre long that would be great.”
Mr Ward added that the different ideas people have for their decorations were terrific.
He added: “The variety of skills and creativity is amazing. Next year I want to do one with sheep and humbug sweets, so it’s baa humbug.”

Crediton Festival Chorus - Messiah - Hallelujah Chorus 06 06 09
This was the dress rehearsal for Handel's Messiah we were singing in the evening. It was the first time we had sung with the orchestra and heard the soloists!
The performance itself was amazing! I still have chills down my spine remembering it! This is something that will stay with me for a very long time! The recording I have done really didn't do the performance justice but it is a great way of remembering a fantastic evening!
