CAIRNHOLY 1
CREETOWN
DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY
SCOTLAND
CAIRNHOLY 1 IS PROBABLY THE BEST PREHISTORIC SITE IN SOUTH WEST SCOTLAND. HERE YOU WILL FIND TWO SPLENDID SITES, 150 METERS APART. CAIRNHOLY 1 IS THE MORE ELABORATE OF THE TWO CONSTRUCTIONS.
HIGH ABOVE WIGTOWN BAY AND KIRKDALE GLEN, SITS CARINHOLY 1 ON A SLIGHTLY SLOPING HILL. ON A CLEAR DAY, THE ISLE OF MANN IS VISIBLE. THE LANDSCAPE IS RICH IN PREHISTORIC REMAINS LIKE GLENQUICKEN STONE CIRCLE, ALONG WITH CUP AND RING CARVINGS. THIS LANDSCAPE WAS OBVIOUSLY VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS.
THE SITES ARE SITUATED OFF THE A75 ROAD BETWEEN THE TOWNS OF CREETOWN AND GATEHOUSE OF FLEET. CAIRNHOLY 1 AND 2 ARE IN THE CARE OF HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT SCOTLAND AND ARE CLEARLY SIGNPOSTED FROM THE A75, A SINGLE ROAD TRACK LEADS YOU HALF A MILE TO THE CARPARK.
CAIRNHOLY 1 IS KNOWN AS A ‘CLYDE CAIRN’ DESIGN TYPE, FOUND IN SOUTH WEST SCOTLAND. EIGHT MEGALITHS MAKE UP A CURVED FACADE. WHEN VIEWED FROM ABOVE THE REMAINS RESEMBLE A BIRD, WITH THE STANDING STONES AS THE WINGS, THE TWO CHAMBERS AS THE BODY AND THE RECUMBENT FORECOURT STONE AS THE HEAD.
EARLY TO LATE NEOLITHIC (4000BC-2000BC), CAIRNHOLY 1 WAS IN ITS PRIME FORM. THE SITE STRETCHED 45M BY 10M WIDE. THIS WENT BEYOND THE MODERN WALL AND CARPARK. MOST OF THE CAIRN MATERIAL WOULD HAVE BEEN USED FOR FIELD WALLS AND BUILDING MATERIAL. SPARCE REMNANTS OF THIS CAIRN CAN STILL BE SEEN.
CAIRNHOLY 1 HAS AN INNER AND OUTER CHAMBER. THE INNER CHAMBER SLAB HAS CONCENTRIC CIRCLES WITH FOUR OR FIVE CUP MARKS. THIS INNER BOX WAS LIKELY COVERED WITH A SLAB. THESE CHAMBERS ARE ALIGNED ROUGHLY EAST TO WEST SUGGESTING AN EQUINOX FUNCTION.
ARCHAEOLOGISTS SUART PIGGOT AND TERENCE POWELL EXCAVATED CAIRNHOLY 1 IN 1949. A SIGNIFICANT FIND WAS A GREEN CEREMONIAL AXE, MADE OF JADITE. THIS AXE WAS UNEARTHED IN THE SLIM OUTER CHAMBER. WHAT IS EVEN MORE REMARKABLE IS THE JADITE CAME FROM THE EUROPEAN ALPS. THIS IS PREHISTORIC INTERACTION FROM MAINLAND EUROPE TO SCOTLAND.
OTHER INTERESTING FINDS WERE ‘PITCHSTONE’ ONLY FOUND ON THE ISLE OF ARRAN, A STONE HOLE, AN ARROWHEAD SHAPED LIKE A LEAF, A KNIFE MADE OF FLINT, POTTERY AND SIX FIRES WITH HEARTHS. THE ACIDIC SOIL HAD DISSOLVED NEARLY ALL BONE, LONG BEFORE THE 1949 EXCAVATION.
IN EDINBURGH, THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF SCOTLAND HOLDS A ROCK CARVED SPIRAL DESIGN FROM THE SITE. CAIRNHOLY 1 IS A SKELETON OF WHAT ONCE WAS. IT IS STILL A FINE NEOLITHIC CONSTRUCTION WHICH WE CAN STILL ENJOY VISITING AND LEARN FROM. NO DOUBT, THE SITE HOLDS MUCH NEOLITHIC KNOWLEDGE, WAITING TO BE DECODED.
A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS.

Eight-year-old becomes UK's youngest town crier
Eight-year-old Evie Cloy is Creetown's first town crier for 51 years after winning a contest to find the next 'bellman' for Creetown in Dumfries.
The last holder of the post was WW1 veteran James Blake who died in 1962 after 33 years of service.
One of the panel members with the task of finding the new town crier said that Evie might have been the smallest contestant but she definitely had the biggest voice.
Evie has received a hand-made ceremonial jacket to go with her role of making announcements at local events and fetes.
I was a bit nervous but once I started shouting I felt better. I'm quite glad no grown-ups wanted the job, Evie said.

The Cairngorms & North East Scotland - How to Explore it on a Budget with Kids!
Where have you been in Scotland? We've only really been to Glasgow and Edinburgh previously so it was great to get out and explore what this great country has to offer. We saw Lakes (Lochs), A Castle, the Sea, Forests and Mountains and found really beautiful isolation at points.
We visited;
Ballater 0:46
Keith 2:04
Portgordon 3:08
Duffus Castle 3:57
Cullen 5:03
The Glenmore Forest Park 6:20
But here's the best bit.... we did this and hardly spent a penny on our activities!
We are sharing our adventures to inspire those who are afraid to travel and to show that life is out there for the taking. We want families to be braver and step away from constantly holidaying in their own country and to try new locations. Experience unique NATURE, try new FOOD & CULTURE and most importantly spend time with your FAMILY. Be brave, get out there! You can do it!
