Cricova Winery and Cellar
►Read the blog:
In this episode David brings us to one of Moldova’s most famous wineries. visiting Cricova Winery and Cellar is the second largest wine producer in Moldova, second only to Milesto Mici, which also happens to be the largest winery in the world!
One of the most exciting things about visiting Cricova is that you’ll get to ride through the tunnels and see where the wines are stored until maturation. The tunnels themselves date back to the 15th century, when the property was used as a limestone quarry to build Chisinau and the surrounding towns.
After WWII the network of tunnels provided the perfect climate to age Cricova’s wines. Every passageway gets its name from the wine that is stored there.
Cricova Winery and Cellar is one of few in the world that produces sparkling wine in accordance with the classical French method of mixing only the best grapes from different vineyards, a practice started centuries ago by the Monk Dom Pierre Perignon.
Next up is the Grand Cellar of Cricova where famous people from around the world have wines stored. Among them are Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Afterwards, David is off to best part of the tour - to the tasting room to finally try some of Cricova’s famous sparkling wines.
Visiting Cricova Winery is an unforgettable experience when in Moldova. It is located just 9 miles north of Chisinau and is open year round. To book a tour, email cricova.vin@gmail.com.
If you enjoy wines as much as David does, you will love visiting Cricova Winery and Cellar’s extensive underground tunnels and tasting its delicious sparkling wines.

Travel Guide Cricova Winery and Cellar Moldova
Cricova Winery: The World's Second Biggest Winery
Wild Frontiers' guide to the fascinating Cricova Winery in Moldova. Little is known about this country, but it's home to 2 of the largest underground wine cellars in the world. During Soviet times Moldova supplied most of the wine to the USSR. Russia banned the import of Moldovan wines and since then Cricova has focussed on producing high quality wine for the international market.
Testing wine in Cricova cellar - Moldova
The wine cellars of Cricova (Moldova) extend 120 kilometers (75 miles) of labyrinth roads. The tunnels formed under Cricova in the 15th century, as a result of limestone mining, for the construction of Chisinau. In the 1950s, they were transformed into an underground wine mall.
Half of the roads are used to store wine. The so-called streets of the underground city are named after the wine brands stored there. This wine city has its own warehouses, tasting rooms and other underground objects. The depth of the cellar is up to 100 meters (330 feet) under the ground and stores 1.25 million bottles of rare wines. The oldest wine dates back to 1902. The temperature is maintained at 12 C (54 ° F) all year round (which is ideal for wine). Actually, one can hire a small cell in the cave, buy wine and keep bottles there. Each year their value is increasing.
I participated in the degustation of vines accompanied by Georgian and local music.

Legend has it that in 1966 astronaut Yuri Gagarin entered the cellars, re-emerging (with assistance) two days later. Russian president Vladimir Putin celebrated his 50th birthday there.
The territory used to be a mine for limestone, a building material. In some branches excavation is still active, so the cellar is still growing. Other famous wineries in Moldova include Cojuşna and Mileştii Mici.
Wine production
Cricova is one of the very few wineries in the world that produce sparkling wines in accordance with the classical French method, purportedly invented centuries ago by the monk Dom Pierre Perignon -- Methode Champenoise, by means of the secondary in-bottle fermentation and an ultimate maturation cuvée in horizontal position of at least 3 years.
Cricova makes a unique sparkling red wine, kodrinskoie-sparkling, made from cabernet sauvignon stocks and marketed as having a 'rich velvet texture and a blackcurrant and cherry taste'.
The Grand Cellars of Cricova house a remarkable collection of wines -- The National Oenotec. The unique exhibits (Jerusalem of Easter vintage 1902, the liqueur Jan Becker vintage 1902) together with other 158 brands from Bourgogne, Moseley, Tokay, Rein, etc. -- make up the precious thesaurus of the establishment as well as of Moldova in general, comprising nowadays a total of about 1.3 million bottles.
However, the pride of the Oenotec are, first of all, the wines bearing the name Cricova, which brought the winery a collection of national and international tasting awards. As of 2008, the collection consists of over 70 silver, gold and Grand Prix awards.
