About Inside West Africa - Cabo Verde
Our aim is to promote local culture, less traveled and visited places and businesses. We believe that local establishments, local people and small grassroots organisations should be promoted and by paying attention to them we think these projects will be more visible and people will be inspired to visit/ join.
Moreover, we believe that by making mini documentaries we can describe the place much better than only by pictures or description.
Through storytelling, writing reviews and blogs we can share our travelling experience and share stories from our own perspective, thereby inspire and motivate the less experienced traveler to explore these less known places. Are you ready to explore Cabo Verde with us?
Who is Mia and Lia?
We are two conservationists, interested in animal biology from Slovakia and The Netherlands with a background in medicine. Mia is a wildlife biologist and a physician; Lia is studying MSc Wildlife Biology and is a veterinarian.
We met in Edinburgh, Scotland, where both of us were studying the MSc Wildlife Biology and Conservation at the Edinburgh Napier University.
Passionate about conservation, we started our first adventure in Boa Vista where we worked (with Turtle Foundation) to protect the loggerhead sea turtles.
This is also the place where the documentary making process started.
After the sea turtle project finished we decided to continue making video’s. Gradually the focus shifted from nature conservation to documentaries where the accent lies on showing the culture of Cabo Verde.
The topics we cover are diverse: food, travel, music and reviews/ recommendations on local places and businesses.
Watch out for more soon!

Think back 10 years ago. Had you heard of Cape Verde? Not quite African and not quite Portuguese, a vibrant mix of both worlds. The islands of Cape Verde are as beautiful as they are mysterious. It was the transatlantic slave trades that put these islands on the map and ten years ago, TUI put them on the tourist trail and the industry boomed. It's no surprise but the constant beat of traditional music, turquoise seas, sandy beaches, world-class surf and surreal lunar landscapes. I've been given the opportunity to travel 2,700 miles across the Atlantic to visit Sal, an island steeped in history and natural wonders, where suddenly there are more tourists than locals. I want to engage with its people, absorb its unique culture and at this most critical time in our planet's history, dig deeper into the reality of tourism and learn how we as tourists can improve the way we travel to ensure a sustainable future for an industry we all love. We've been guided along the way by two amazing charities; the TUI Care Foundation and the Travel Foundation who work closely with local businesses and hotels. This trip was to become one of the biggest eyeopeners of my travels to date. So let's go back to the beginning. At Holiday Extras we believe in making simple choices to improve the way we travel, to find solutions that benefit the environment and lessen our negative impact on a destination so our journey began in an airport lounge at Gatwick, ideal if you're trying to avoid buying plastic whilst filling up on delicious food before your flight. We chose to fly direct to Sal with TUI Airways, the world's most carbon efficient airline. And upon landing we were met by our prefect transfer driver who took us straight to our greener hotel on the southwest coast of the island. So we're starting our day having breakfast with a view. It kind of reminds me of what the moon would look like. It's very rocky but that view is just gorgeous and we're not wasting any time, we're starting today with an island tour and this is with the company called Explore CV, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what today has an offer. Booking an excursion on a trip can be the highlight of any holiday but we want to emphasize the importance of finding a responsible tour company. Explore Cape Verde were recommended to us by the Travel Foundation for being passionate about the island's wildlife, whilst providing eco-conscious excursions. We booked on an island tour and our tour guide Jordi was a knowledgeable marine biologist. The tour started in the coastal town of Santa Maria at the fishing pier which is the soul of the island. Jordi showed us around and explained that the fisherman returned around 11:00 a.m. every morning to their wives who are waiting at the pier ready to sell the catch. If it's the locals fisherman's it is a sustainable fishing we also sell the rights for the European Union to fish here in Cape Verdean waters. Cape Verde got its independence in 1975. As a former Portuguese colony, they absorbed the Portuguese influence and their blood. Mixed with the Africans who settled here, essentially created their own race Creole. It's like cultural to jump from the pier. If you come here and you didn't jump you cannot say that you've been in Sal. The no stress lifestyle here it seems the whole time. Next up we visited a natural reef, a popular feeding area for lemon sharks and a place for tourists to safely see them in the wild. You can rent water shoes to protect your feet from the rocks and carefully wade in to watch them hunt. Jordi's care and consideration for the sharks was very clear, insisting we keep a fair distance as not to disturb them. Other guides let their groups go as far as they wanted, some even chased the curious parts which reminded me of the importance of booking with a responsible company.

MC DOMAS
Mc Domas' music is traditional Bissau-Guinean style music with a modern twist played in african rhythms such as gumbeh, reggae, tina and zouk. McDomas sings mainly in Bissau-Guinean Portuguese based creole, but uses in his lyrics also English and Finnish.
Mc Domas is an artist name for Bissau-Guinean born Domingos Bodjam. He is a singer and songwriter and composer of his music. His roots are firmly in the traditional rhythms of Africa. His lyrics deal with current issues of politics, religion and love and everything in between.
He is a new generation African musician who embraces the traditional style, yet bringing a fresh touch with some contemporary nuances both musically and lyrically.
Joao Cerilo...sexy funana dancer...Live at Lowell Music Festival 2008
Cape Verdean musical artist Joao Cerilo - Live at Lowell Music Festival 2008
Video by: Napoleon X for Protown Productions
Growing up on the island of Santiago, Cape Verdean accordionist Joao Cerilo learned to play the traditional Creole music of the islands. While a young boy, Joao mastered the African influenced polyrhythms and improvisational call and response vocal styles of batuku and funana. An accordion based dance music, funana features infectious and driving dance rhythms, highlighted by vocal improvisations commenting on and criticizing conditions and events. Joao learned to play both ferinho—an iron bar used as a percussion instrument in funana—and the gaita—a diatonic accordion. Joao studied music in Portugal before emigrating to the United States in 1982, becoming a respected and celebrated musician in New England's significant Cape Verdean communities.
As leader of the band, Pilon Batuku, Joao has taken the music of Santiago around the world, playing both the traditional rhythmic variants of funana as well as African popular styles including drums, guitar, and bass. Even as electronic drums and synthesizers have been used in contemporary fusion funana styles, Pilon Batuku and many Cape Verdeans remain committed to the ferinho and gaita. Pilon Batuku also highlight funana's integral role as dance music, including dancers as core members of the ensemble. Audiences follow suit as the upbeat and beatific sounds Joao Cerilo and Pilon Batuku pull them out of their seats and onto their feet.
Carnival Mindelo 2017, São Vicente - Cape Verde
The most famous festival in Cape Verde is the carnival also known as the Creole festival. It is normally held on most of the islands in February, close to Ash Wednesday. The streets are awash with revellers in fancy dresses and the atmosphere is electrifying.
Every year, Carnival fever takes over the Cape Verde islands...carnaval Cabo Verde. There are many local celebrations, the biggest taking place in Mindelo on the island of São Vicente.
In Cape Verde Carnival is big and beautiful. The most popular Carnival is the one in MIndelo. Cesária Évora sang about it being a ‘brazilim’, or a small Brazilian Carnival. During Carnival there is a vibrant atmosphere in the whole city and everybody is outside celebrating Carnival.
Different groups parade during the official day, the 28 of February, but preparations start months before, in view of the prestige and coveted final price. This year the Carnival Mindelo 2017 edition has been won by Vindos do Oriente.
