Thousands of basketball fans at the University of Michigan Crisler Center for the NCAA finals.
Thousands of basketball fans at the University of Michigan Crisler Center for the NCAA finals.
Thousands of Michigan basketball fans filled bars, restaurants and the Crisler Center on Monday, creating an electric atmosphere in Ann Arbor as their beloved Wolverines faced Villanova in the NCAA National Championship game in San Antonio. For the start time, the Crisler Center was swinging: many of the students had been waiting outside the arena for hours to watch the game broadcast on giant television screens. Vivian Righter, a sophomore at the University of Michigan, arrived at 4:30 p.m. and faced the cold with his friends, playing cards and publishing for the game until the doors opened at 8 p.m.
We went crazy when they won the Final Four game, I started running down the street screaming. If they win tonight, I'll do exactly the same, Righter said. If they lose, what will not happen, I will cry and probably do my homework, my average Monday night. The crowd of fans, dressed in corn and blue, stood singing, singing, cheering and hugging each other, making the arena seem to be the site of a live game rather than a broadcast. Every time the screen approached a Villanova player, the fans booed brutally. Any play that worked in Michigan's favor, a steal, a free throw, a block or even a failed Villanova shot was won by screaming so loud that sometimes the eardrums would shake.
