Iceland on High Alert as Volcano Threatens To Erupt
On top of a wall of blue ice is the outflow of a massive glacier that sits on top of Katla, one of Iceland’s most active volcanoes. An intricate system of sensors monitors the glacier’s every move, because when Katla erupts, it won’t be fire but flood waters that will engulf the valley below it.
In Iceland, travelers come revved up for adventure. They board oversized Humvees or snowmobiles to crisscross glaciers thousands of years old.
One is called Mýrdalsjökull. Bjorn Hafsteinsson has been leading glacier tours for the past three years. He drove us about 5,000 feet up, scaling the glacier that holds a secret.
Underneath all the ice, Katla is ready to blow, reports CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller.

Iceland - Reykjanes Gunnuhver
Iceland Reykjanes Gunnuhver
In the Icelandic nature, everything has a name, every mountain, every valley, every canyon, fissure or even crack. And almost behind each name is a story. The most southern tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula is a spectacular place to visit. A highly active geothermal area of mud pools and steam vents boiling practically under your feet – if you dare to walk the wooden planks crisscrossing the area. Indeed, here is where you find the biggest mud pool in Iceland, Gunnuhver – or Gunna hot spring.
The hot spring got its name from one troublesome ghost, Gunna.
Just before dying the woman Gunna had a fight with the local sheriff, Wilhelm whom she hated. When she died, their dispute had not been solved. Still, Wilhelm attended her funeral. Suspiciously the next day he was found dead; his body bruised and blue, his bones broken. His remains were taken to the Útskálar church where the priest, Gísli, had to fight Gunna the ghost throughout the night as she was determined to drag the sheriff to Hell. Gunna the ghost did not succeed and went absolutely bonkers. Wilhelm‘s widow suddenly died an unexplainable death, people traveling the peninsula got lost, died or went mad. Everyone knew Gunna was to blame. She refused to stay dead – and was quite visible. Life on the Reykjanes peninsula became unbearable.
Finding a way to get rid of the ghost
Finally, two farmers, with some spiritual knowledge, decided to get the priest at Vogósar, Erik, to bust the ghost. Knowing Eric would be reluctant, they decided to bribe him with quite a potent poteen – which he was known to like a tad too much. After listening to their plight, the priest gave the farmers a rope with a knot on one end. He told them to give the unknotted end to Gunna; the knotted end would trundle and drag her to a place where she would get stuck forever. The farmers did as they were told and the last sighting they heard of Gunna the ghost was when she plunged into the hot spring. They declared her dead, the peninsula became safe from her misconducts and gave the hot spring her name so everyone would know where Gunna met her final fate.
Gunnuhver in the Reykjanes peninsula, not far from the International airport in Iceland was once a beautiful little hot spring.
A few months ago Gunnuhver started to change its mood and became a bit angry and aggressive. The hot spring became louder and started to expand to a larger area. In a few days, Gunnuhver had consumed part of the platform intended for viewing its beauty and started to splash hot clay and boiling dirty drizzle all over the place. Although a bit calm these days, the former pretty little hot spring is considered quite dangerous. As we can see, there are still photographers that are prepared to take the risk on some of the platforms that Gunnuhver has not consumed, yet.
Travel to Iceland and have fun.

Gorbachev's Speech at University of Wyoming, October 2011
Gorbachev's Speech at University of Wyoming, October 2011
Mikhail Gorbachev, who led the Soviet Union during the historic final years of the Cold War spoke on Global Unrest and International Leadership in the 21st Century at the University of Wyoming on Friday, Oct. 14, at 3:30 p.m. in UW's Arena-Auditorium. The event was open to the public and occured during UW's Homecoming weekend.
Gorbachev served as head of state to the Soviet Union, including during its dissolution in 1991. Gorbachev is widely known for his reform measures as well as summit conferences with United States President Ronald Reagan. Gorbachev is credited for his reorientation of Soviet strategic positions which coincided with the end of the Cold War.
Gorbachev dedicated himself to building a relationship of mutual trust between the Soviet Union and the United States, signing two broad disarmament pacts that dramatically reduced the danger of worldwide nuclear destruction. For his efforts, he was awarded the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize.
Now retired from politics, Gorbachev continues to strive toward achieving his global vision of peace. Gorbachev's efforts include starting the Gorbachev Foundation in 1992, headquartered in San Francisco, and founding Green Cross International in 1993.
Mikhail Gorbachev is unquestionably one of the most influential world leaders of the 20th century. He will rank among the most significant personalities who have ever spoken on the University of Wyoming campus, said UW President Tom Buchanan. This will be an incredible opportunity for our students, faculty, alumni and the Wyoming community to listen and interact with a world-changing political figure.
This will be an incredible opportunity for our students, faculty, alumni and the Wyoming community to listen and interact with a world-changing political figure, Buchanan said when announcing that Gorbachev had accepted an invitation to speak at UW.
UW students had an opportunity to dine with one of the most influential world leaders of the 20th century by submitting questions to be asked of former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev, following his talk. Gorbachev wanted to answer students' questions. Students questions were selected by a committee and and posed by retired U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson. For those students whose questions were selected, they were invited to a reception to meet Gorbachev following his talk.

The Fall - Medical Acceptance Gate
This version appeared on The Collection for the first time, as a previously unreleased outtake from the early 1980s.
Lyrics:
I worked for future salary the nightshift
In Spalding Street. The respect is worth it.
1 AM at the front gate it had just been
Sunday night stood this man, tall and twisted back.
He spoke loud and said
Come out of there that
Grill on the wall contains a crowl, and
That twisted shape you call the
Laundry post reminds me of my origin
Your criss-crossed fences are avenues
Paid for by the NHS, you need it more than
The patients for mortgage fees and medical pranks
But you wont fix my quartz chip
Or repair my broken kind
Kindness born of mousy brain
Truth hit with kin of bitter world
Vicious dreams of EC1
And Lapland girls and green birds
Which crawl and chase through dug basements
The porter went to move the man
And we got back to practice time
But his hands went through the man
He was made up of liquid pitch
His legs two smoke pillar sticks
Crisscrossed fence posts were his eyes
His mouth red like a twisted knife
His mouth like a twisted life
He reeked of bleach and hospitals
He reeked of bleach and hospitals
The porter swears this is true
He reeked of bleach and hospitals
The porter swears this is true
And drinks too much in his brown and white hut
But the thing clings to the acceptance gate
The thing clings to the acceptance gate
The thing clings to the acceptance gate
The thing clings to the med. acceptance gate
And nobody sane he's seen it
It only bugs us young MDs
We are dedicated to fight disease
To fight disease

Opening Day Lecture: “Experiencing Ragnar Kjartansson”
Presented by Mark Scala, chief curator, Frist Center for the Visual Arts
Icelandic performance artist Ragnar Kjartansson’s hypnotic and playful video installation The Visitors has been called “a generational masterpiece” by The Boston Globe. Presented on nine large screens, The Visitors includes film of musicians situated throughout an aging mansion, providing an intimate environment that seems to ache with forlorn memory. Together, the musicians repeat a sweetly melancholic composition, which gradually swells to an emotionally stirring finale that culminates in the musicians leaving their isolated rooms and joining together in a harmonious group.
Chief curator Mark Scala will discuss Kjartansson’s work in the context of durational performance, a contemporary art genre that explores questions of stamina, intimacy, relevance, and slowness in contemporary life. Such performances often encapsulate the notion of relational aesthetics, a conceptual framework in which the artist searches for meaning through the construction of social interactions. Scala’s lecture will encourage viewers to consider Kjartansson’s work in light of the fundamental question “Is it an object or an experience?”
