Croc Farm Ivato: 10,000 crocodiles ready to be turned into a kebab or handbag
Croc Farm in Ivato, just outside Antananarivo in Madagascar, breeds crocodiles for meat and skin, turning their produce into anything from a kebab to a handbag.
Emily Payne visits the farm to see the breeding reptiles get fed, and looks around the enclosures - home to around 10,000 crocs and a whole host of other endemic animals - with groundsman Robin.

Antananarivo and Tsimbazaza Zoo
Day 1 in Madagascar
A lovely first day in the country. As we waited for some of our research permits to be processed, we decided to check out the zoo in the bustling capital city. As someone who has spent a lot of time working in zoos, I was curious to see what this zoo would be like. The conservation and education potential in zoos is immense, however it has not been until somewhat recently that zoos have started to evolve into institutions that support and prioritize conservation and education. I would argue that all zoos still have a long way to go and many of them should not even be open. This being the first zoo I have been to outside of the U.S., I was eager to see how it would compare to the zoos I have been to. The zoo was in better condition than I expected, although it could still use a lot of help. I was impressed with the grounds as they were relatively clean and there was a lot of space for people to walk around and enjoy plants and native wildlife. Some exhibits were quite small while others were larger than some exhibits in the U.S. The zoo did not emphasize conservation and education and I did not expect it to. The animals were in varying conditions from healthy to obviously not doing too well, but none of them were in extremely poor conditions. Overall, I am glad I went as it gave me a better understanding of the state of zoos in a new country.
I would caution everyone to be more cognizant of how they interact with animals, as it can be easy to forget or not realize the impact of our actions. From what we watch on TV and like on Facebook, to the zoos we go to or the pets we have...all these interactions make a difference in how we perceive and treat animals. They are a pertinent part of the planet which also belongs to them, so we should do our best to respect and help them.
I am excited to learn more about this unique country! I am hoping I will be able to post more videos, however as we leave for our research field site, I do not know how the internet will be.
