Watch Croft
Watch Croft is a 827ft (252 metre) high Marilyn on the Penwith Moors in Cornwall. It is the highest point on the moors and is among one of the highest in the whole of Cornwall.
The marilyn has been active since the Bronze Age and a Bronze Age menhir and cairns can be found on the summit of the marilyn. The name 'Watch Croft' comes from a hut which was built on top of it during the Napoleonic War to keep watch. The remains of the hut can still be seen today, built on the side of a rocky outcrop.
A mine, Morvah Hill Mine, was built on Watch Croft and part of it still survives today, as well as its mineshafts. There is also an Iron Age Settlement at the bottom of the marilyn. This settlement is on private land, unlike the rest of the marilyn which is open to the public.
Watch Croft is one of only five marilyns in Cornwall, the others being Brown Willy (the highest point in Cornwall), Kit Hill, Hensbarrow Beacon and Carnmenellis Hill.

1937 England & Switzerland footage Vintage Home Movie- Dickinson family w/ Croft & Hill
Footage from the Dickinson's 1937 trip to England and Switzerland. My apologies for the poor quality of this footage. I bought three projectors before finding one to fit the films, which are close to 80 years old now, and the quality must be deteriorating.
In this video the only people I can name are Rose Dickinson, Billy Hill, and I'm sure his wife, Annie (Croft) Hill is in it. Annie's father was W.H. Hill, tobacco dealer, and Caroline (Dickinson) Hill. They lived in Dewsbury. My 2nd great aunt, Rose Dickinson, and perhaps her brother, John Dickinson, went to visit in 1937 and took this video.

Croft Quarry and Croft Hill Slideshow
Croft quarry is renowned to be the largest man-made hole in the ground in Europe. It was made from the joining and expansion of the old Croft and Huncote quarries and was owned by the Pochin family, originally from the Syston area. The quarry has various works buildings, better seen from the air. Material from the quarry is used for concrete and in the construction of roads. Croft was the site of councils of the synod and witanagemot in the 8th and 9th centuries, in the reigns of Kings, Offa and Aethelbald and others, during the period where the English kingdom was firmly established. The old site of Croft was destroyed by the expansion of the quarry.
Croft Castle, England
A brief run through the grounds at Croft Castle in Herefordshire. It was more of a residential castle than a defensive stronghold or fortress. We were very limited on time, so we didn't have time to go inside or take a tour. Didn't seem as fascinating, though, as some of the other castles we visited in Wales.
Croft Hill Panorama
It is said that Croft Quarry is the largest man-made hole in Europe. From the far side much more of the workings and factory complex would be visible.
Croft was the site of councils of the synod and witanagemot in the 8th and 9th centuries, in the reigns of Kings, Offa and Aethelbald. In those times, the foundations for the English political system were put in place.
