HISTORY OF CROMWELL’S CASTLE
This tall round tower, standing on a low projecting shelf of rock, is one of only a few stone fortifications that survive from the Interregnum (1649–60) and takes its name from Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England.
The fort replaced a Tudor blockhouse on the site, and superseded King Charles’ Castle, which had been built in the 1550s on higher ground but proved to be poorly sited and was partly demolished to provide building stone for this later castle.
Royalists had held out on the Isles of Scilly for most of the Civil War period. Increasing tension with the Dutch, and in particular the arrival of a Dutch fleet off the islands in March 1651 demanding reparations from the Royalist privateers based there, prompted Parliament to send Robert Blake, the most successful admiral of the 17th century, to recapture these strategic islands.
The castle was built in 1651, following swiftly on Blake’s success, to guard one of the main routes of entry to the heart of the islands and the deep water approach to New Grimsby harbour. It faced a potential enemy with an impossible choice.
No fleet could hope to land troops on this side of Tresco unless it had first destroyed or captured the castle, but the chances of destroying the castle by gunfire from the sea were very slim. The fort was considered worth updating a century later, when a platform for cannon was added on the seaward side.
DESCRIPTION
The castle consisted of a basement, two upper storeys and a gun platform on the roof. The rubble walls below the platform are almost 13 feet (4 metres) thick; internally the tower measures nearly 20 feet (6 metres) across and is over 50 feet (15 metres) high. The original entrance, later blocked, was high up on the south side, reached by external wooden stairs: stone supports or corbels, projecting out from the doorway, would have supported a wooden platform in front of it.
The roof survives, supported by a fine ribbed vault, and although the intervening floors have gone, their positions are evident from joist holes and fireplaces. The basement was presumably intended for storage. A spiral staircase within the walls takes the visitor up to the roof, where the six widely splayed gunports give an all-round field of fire.
On the south-west side of the tower, facing the sea, is the large 18th century gun platform that replaced the original gun battery. The gun platform, designed for six cannon, is surrounded by a low parapet wall.
To provide better access to the tower the original entrance was made into a window and a new one made from the platform. The rooms on either side of the later entrance – a guardroom with a fireplace to the right, and a latrine to the left – are also 18th century additions.

History & Haunting of: Sizergh Castle , Helsington, Cumbria ,England.
Helsington’s landscape is one of contrasts. Extensive woodland lay along the banks of the River Kent in the east and in the south, where Sizergh Castle sat ‘in the midst of fertile grounds,
beautifully sprinkled with wood’.
Sizergh Castle Cumbria
In the care of the National Trust since 1950, this place holds a remarkable history of a family being able to keep the title of the property from 1239. Former owners fought for King and country, being strong supporters of the Yorkists during the Wars of the Roses. Yet the haunting here is more of a poltergeist nature. On one occassion the floorboards were torn up, only to be ripped out again when they were replaced
Sizergh has been associated with the Strickland family since 1239, when the heiress Elizabeth Deincourt married William de Stirkeland. The solar tower of the castle was a potent symbol of the Stricklands power during the Middle Ages, when they played a leading role in the wars with Scotland and France. Prominent as Catholic royalists throughout the 17th century, the Stricklands went into exile in 1688 with the court of James II at Saint-Germain in France. They returned to Sizergh by the early 18th Century as impoverished Jacobites, but thanks to the careful efforts of Winifred, Lady Strickland, they were able to afford a few baroque-style alterations to the house. Sir Gerald Strickland, later Lord Strickland of Sizergh (1861-1940) along with his second wife Margaret Hulton, installed the famous rock garden which was laid out in 1926-8. In 1931 the estate transferred to Lord Strickland's daughter Mary and her husband Henry Hornyold. They and their son Lt-Cdr Thomas Hornyold-Strickland gave the house to the National Trust in 1950.

50 Moon Over Castle Ennor
Castle Ennor (Early Days)
Footage shot on the third flight with the Quadcopter, back in early January and also an early attempt at the editing process.
Castle Ennor is steeped in history, most of which to my shame, I don't know. What I do know is that it is mighty impressive and so often unnoticed.
Tresco Island
There is an island of uncompromising beauty, hidden away from the tourist's gaze. An island with a temperate climate and beautiful sea - a secluded haven of hills, rocky coves and sandy bays.
A place where you can laze on a deserted beach, rejuvenate in an exclusive spa, sail on sparkling seas, walk the rugged coastline or just relax in the world-renowned Abbey Garden.
The island is Tresco. It's only 28 miles off the Cornish coast and you could be here soon.

Dupath Well
Dupath Well is a very large and impressive holy well at the back of Dupath Farm near Callington in Cornwall. The holy well has been described as the finest and best holy well in Cornwall with the well house being not just the finest in Cornwall but one of the finest in the British Isles. The well house is built like a chapel and even has a door and a turret. The well is dedicated to St Ethelred. The well house was built in around 1510 by the Augustinian canons from St Germans Priory. It was over a holy well which was filled by an underground spring which opens close to the door. It is believed that the well cured whooping cough and it is thought that the well was also used for baptisms. A well known legend attached with Dupath Well is that this was the site of a duel by two people, Colan and Gottlieb, which was for a lady however Colan was killed and Gottlieb fatally wounded so the lady remained unmarried and without a partner after all. The construction of the spring flow in the well is that it rises close to the door, goes down a small channel and into a larger well pool (the holy well itself) inside the well house at the back. It then overflows through a hole at the back and into a round trough outside at the back of the well house. The well really is worth a visit and is a beautiful place.
The well is signposted from the A388 and there is parking on Dupath Farm, you will then need to walk through the farmyard (all public right of way) to the well. The well is in the care of the Cornwall Heritage Trust.
