Crook Peak Walk (26/12/2015)
A favourite walk of mine upon the Mendip Hills in Somerset, south-west England. About 11 miles in length, with several steep climbs.
I apologise for the bumpiness of this video and for the lack of a tripod - it was a very windy day. If you think this video might be better with background music, please let me know.

Music on Mendip Video.mov
This is Aimee Ratcliffe's composition, one of 28 pieces of music composed by year 10 from Churchill Community School. Music students, working with renowned sound artist Duncan Speakman, have composed a series of musical pieces inspired by a Mendip landscape. Dolebury Warren -- a high limestone hilltop hosting an Iron Age fort, with spectacular views to the Bristol Channel.
Listen while you walk. Using GPS-based technology you will be able to walk across Dolebury Warren, listening to the music and hear it change as you move from one place to another.

Barton Road Cycle At The Base of Crook's Peak, 2011. Part 5.wmv
After consulting the cycling map I decided my instinct was right and ended up on the other side of the valley .There was no time today to visit the church tucked in the side and foot of Crook's Peak because it would soon be dark and there was at least 6 miles to go up and down hills as I followed the contours over the Bleadon Hills towards Weston. I will do a reverse cycle loop another day to ensure I visit that Little church on the way to Winscombe. Two further parts follow this video

Peak District Walk - Win Hill & Hope Cross in the Snow
A walk starting at the Yorkshire Bridge Inn at Ladybower in the Peak District. I head up to the top of a windswept Win Hill and then through the snow drifts to Hope Cross. I then forge may way down through the forest and back along the banks of the Ladybower reservoir.

Peak District - Lost Farmstead - Elmin Pitts Farm, a hike via Ladybower, Winhill & Crook Hill
I’m still new to this hiking lark but have deffo got the bug. As you may see I’m, also new to filming and have a lot more to learn. Hoped to get in front of the camera more too in this video but was drowned out by the wind and must get a muff as well as a new tripod as I slipped and broke a leg off. Ouch!.
I’ve barely scratched the surface of the peak district but one of my favorites must be the Upper Derwent – steeped with history from the last ice age to the present. But in that 10,000 years the biggest impact on the Upper Derwent happened in just 45 years or so from the building of the Howden, Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs to meet the needs of the thirsty millions in the surrounding cities. Whist growing cities of the early part of the century saw the great rural areas as being a supplier or resources, at the same time, there was a great interest of the ‘workers’ to get freedom to roam the countryside to get away from the factories and the smoke.
Following the building of the Howden and Derwent, completed in 1912 & 1916 life would have been slowly returning to normal but the shock news came in 1935 for the villages of Ashopton and Derwent that their villages were to be submerged and lost forever as the final reservoir was to be built.
Flooding completed in 1946 but several farmsteads that once worked the sleepy valleys were submerged or simply made their pastures cut off and impossible to work.
One such Farmstead, Elmin Pitts Farmstead, now in the forest woodlands, has some of its stoneworks dating back to the 1740’s still in place but alas much of it is tumbling from the falling trees. But an idyllic setting with moss clad dry stone walls- now amongst the pine trees. Maybe this would be a first wild camp location for me but I am sure a creepy place at night and not so enchanted.
Seen in the video is Hope Cross, located just above this farmstead, which stands on a former Roman road on the crossroads of an important packhorse rout. The 7 feet high post with a square capstone bearing the names of Edale, Glossop, Hope and Sheffield on its faces dates back 1737. Most likely there would have been a cross here before this one.
Other farmsteads lost were Bellhag Farm, Bridge End Farm, Cockbridge Farm, Fairholmes Farm, Grainfoot Farm, Haglee Farm, Wellhead Farm & Wood’s Farm.
In this hike I take in Win Hill and Crook Hill and definitely recommend that walk to get a great Derwent & Ladybower experience.

Music - PeakBeatz
In this vid I use my latest track WelcomePeakz. Has some sounds of the Peak District - eg cows, sheep, thunder & rain! may be a bit hip-hoppy not sure. Played with a voice generator for more specifically and “Welcome to the Glorious Peak District while the 10cc style whisper is voiced by non other than the real Amanda and which of course is coined by #TheGloriousPeakDistrict Oracle Dean Read

Reading?
There are some great books available on the history of the upper Derwent and I would certainly recommend Dr Bill Bevan. Bill’s own books on the Ancient Peakland are superb. Bill is an Archaeologist, writer, photographer and DJ (Unity Dub).
Also, I recommend the most excellent book Silent Valley by Vic Hallam.
In this ATV clip, the late Gwyn Richards interviews former residents of Derwent and Ashopton villages in Derbyshire which were flooded during the construction of Ladybower Reservoir in the 40’s. The B&W footage & commentary by Gwyn Richards is in true spirit of the mood of the day, although filmed in 1966.
Filmed with an Rx100, GoPro & Samsung S6
For maps I used Garmin BaseCamp
Out of breath sound effects are real!

A Winter Adventure in The Peak District | Climbing Win Hill
An afternoon adventure in the snow climbing up Win Hill in the Peak District. I'd called it a Vlog but it's more a video of me mucking about (VOMMA). Expect sarcasm and sillyness.
I always try and get a snowy walk up Win Hill done each year. It's a great place to find the deepest snow and feels like a proper adventure compared to most Peak District hills. Also we check out The Peak Districts Best Waterfall.
Warning - features Snow Angels
Any equipment mentioned is purely a bit of a tip off on good gear, this is a sponsorship free video.

Axbridge Boxing Day 2016
This is the scene in Axbridge in Somerset on Boxing Day. The Weston and Banwell Harriers do not hunt foxes but follow a scent laid down for the hounds to follow. However there is criticism of such hunts about the land they sometime operate on - National Trust land around Crook Peak on the Mendips - and whether they don't 'by accident' catch and kill wildlife that the hounds chance upon. A defense of the hunt can be found here: while criticism of the hunt can be found here: The meeting on Boxing Day is well attended and certainly makes for good photo opportunities and PR for the hunt. The Hunting Act of 2004 sort to end abuses of hunting by hounds - but there is still considerable opposition to the sport - which in part is to do with the social history of the UK and seeing blood sports as a sport - which includes shooting and fishing. And there is a strong lobby in support pointing to the positive impact the social and business aspects of hunting groups have on rural communities. It's a debate that is set to continue.
