Update from the road to Crooked Tree, Belize
After a wonderful day in Orange Walk, where I went on a boat tour, saw Mayan ruins and lots of animals, got a new zipper for a cycling jersey and figured out why my Camelbak is leaking, I started down the road with the idea of going to Ladyville. Then I saw the turnoff for Crooked Tree and stopped to take a look at some of the highway hotel advertising. I've heard a lot of wonderful things about Crooked Tree. I didn't realize how close to the highway it is and that there are many places to stay. Of all the adverts, I picked the Bird's Eye View Hotel to call. They had a vacancy at a reasonably price and I decided to change my plans and ride down the dirt road to explore Crooked Tree.

Birds in Belize 2019
Birds in Belize 2019, a record of birds 'captured' with my new Nikon Coolpix P1000 between Feb 1st and Mar 15th.
Our trip started on Ambergris Caye. From there, we progressed to the Placencia area, then down to Punta Gorda and the Toledo District, then North. We spent a few enjoyable days at Belize Bird Rescue - BBR - where we saw an amazing array of parrots and other birds and met some bird enthusiasts, and spent our last week up in the San Ignacio area. We discovered that Spanish Lookout is a great place for birds, and that Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is also a haven for Hummingbirds, and other birds in the surrounding jungle!

Sunrise at Crooked Tree Lagoon, Belize
A beautiful sunrise over Crooked Tree Lagoon in the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, Belize (about 45 minutes west of Belize City). This is the time of year when hundreds of egrets, herons, storks, jacana, pelicans, avocets, stilts, and many other shorebirds congregate to feed on the many fish in the lagoon, which is destined to dry up by April. We saw many great birds from the Crooked Tree Lodge, which looks out on this view, including one of the biggest in the Americas (the Jabiru Stork) and one of the smallest (the American Pygmy Kingfisher). I thought the opening movement of Mahler's first--a kind of beginning of the world movement--would be ideal for this video.
Birding in Belize: The Lodge at Chaa Creek
It is time to get wildly civilized and go bird watching with The Lodge at Chaa Creek! For our fourth episode of A Day in a Birder's Life series, we went birding at The Lodge at Chaa Creek. This luxury eco-resort was recently named as Belize’s hotel of the year for 2018. The Lodge at Chaa Creek is noted to be a birder’s paradise with over three hundred species of birds found within their 400-acre private nature reserve.

As we were told, Chaa Creek didn’t go green…they started that way. Chaa Creek has done an excellent job in preserving the natural state of the property while building an amazing luxury eco-resort where anyone can come and enjoy nature in its near pristine state.
At the crack of dawn, we met Mr. Miguel Choco who gave us a copy of the Chaa Creek Nature Reserve Bird Guide, along with a thorough briefing before taking us on a birding hike through the Chaa Creek Nature Preserve. Watch this video as he explains a bit of his history birding at Chaa Creek since the late 1990’s, and why you should come birding at Chaa Creek.

Crooked Tree Gets Its Own Hurricane Shelter

On the day that marks the end of the Hurricane Season, Crooked Tree Village was gifted with a million dollar disaster shelter. It is a fittingly appropriate gift to the people of Crooked Tree – after all, their village is always affected by hurricanes and flooding when it passes over that part of the country. So, today it was a grand affair – with a full ceremony, music by the Connection Band and lots of food and drinks. But before all that there were the formalities. The U.S. Ambassador, Minister of NEMO, and over two hundred residents gathered for the handing over of the building. News Five’s Andrea Polanco attended today’s event and has this report.
