Review: Holiday Inn Express, Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Merseyside, England - July 2014
I recently stayed at the Holiday Inn Express near Liverpool John Lennon Airport, whilst en-route to Italy. I had a very early morning flight, so staying at the airport hotel proved to be advantageous. The hotel is situated within a 5 minute taxi ride of the airport itself, and is a comfortable no-frills business style hotel, that is comfortable and modern with both free breakfast and free wi-fi. I enjoyed my stay here, and would recommend this hotel to other travellers who have an early start at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
This film features external views of the hotel, the reception, lift, a detailed room review, corridors, lobby and the breakfast buffet.

Manchester Liverpool Road railway station, Manchester, England, United Kingdom, Europe
Liverpool Road is a former railway station on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in Manchester, England, which opened on 15 September 1830. The station was the Manchester terminus of the world's first inter-city passenger railway in which all services were hauled by timetabled steam locomotives. It is now the world's oldest surviving terminal railway station. The station closed to passenger services on 4 May 1844 when the line was extended to join the Manchester and Leeds Railway at Hunt's Bank. Liverpool Road was superseded by Manchester Victoria railway station for passenger services. Like its counterpart terminal station at Liverpool Crown Street the station was converted to a goods yard. Since Liverpool Road ceased operation, the oldest railway station still in use is Broad Green railway station in Liverpool which also opened on 15 September 1830. The Liverpool and Manchester Railway opened starting from the Liverpool Terminal at Crown Street, hence the older stations start from Liverpool. The station, which is a Grade I listed building, is now part of the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. As a consequence of opposition from the proprietors of the Mersey and Irwell Navigation, it had been intended to terminate the railway on the Salford side of the Irwell. A last minute agreement brought about a change in plan. The river would be spanned by a two arched stone bridge, incorporating a cart road for the use of the Navigation company. The real problem was how to cross Water Street. The levels would not permit an arched bridge to the dimensions demanded by the Manchester Highway Commissioners. The only alternative was a flat span across a distance judged to be too wide. Fortunately, William Fairbairn, in the quest to perfect fireproof mill flooring, had developed a parabolic 'T' section girder that could span such a distance. Thus, the Water Street bridge might be said to be the first modern girder bridge. The station itself comprised a slightly curved brick viaduct that terminated in the slope that led up from Water Street to Deansgate, alongside Liverpool Road. The viaduct fronted a solid brick warehouse, a construction that owed much to canal warehouses, beyond which was a low-level yard that was excavated into the hillside. There was a wooden transit shed at the viaduct end, on the corner of Liverpool Road and Byrom Street and turnplates gave access to coal drops at the end of the yard. Of course, at that time, goods traffic was considered the most important potential source of income, and for this, the terminus was well placed in the midst of the Castlefield canal and warehousing complex. Provision for the passengers was something of an afterthought. An existing house on the corner of Liverpool Road and Water Street was purchased for the use of the 'Station Agent'. A brick structure was erected next to it, incorporating elaborate door and window surrounds, the whole being finished in stucco rendering, scored to imitate stonework. The most curious feature was the positioning of a sundial over the first class entrance. The railway only carried first and second class passengers, and each class had its own booking hall and waiting room. As the station was some distance from the centre of Manchester, most passengers purchased a handwritten ticket from an agent at an inn or hotel. Several routes of horse omnibuses then conveyed them to the station. A clerk in the booking hall exchanged the ticket for a counterfoil (similar to a modern airline boarding pass), and made up a waybill from the ticket information for the train guard. (The train guard thus had a passenger list indicating class of travel and destination, the only check against fraud.) The passengers proceeded upstairs to the waiting room, and licensed outdoor porters took charge of their luggage, being paid a set scale of fees. Indoor porters took charge of the luggage on the station platform and strapped it to the carriage roofs. The ringing of the station bell then announced that the passengers could go through the door on to the platform and board the train. The bell was also rung as a warning of departure, but the actual signal was given by the guard's trumpet or horn. The original bell is still exhibited in the station building. The planning of railway stations was clearly not so advanced at this time as supporting pillars of the building prevented certain carriage doors from opening fully. The station buildings were extended in 1831 by the construction of a simple two-road carriage shed on top of a range of rooms along Liverpool Road.

Liverpool Ferry Boat Ride
When you are in the city of Liverpool, one of the sights you must go to see are the Ferry boats on the River Mersey. The song Ferry cross the Mersey certainly helped to make them famous. Sadly it is no longer possible to take a journey across but they do still run as you can see in this video. They a wonderful sight, especially in the early evening as the sun is setting over the River Mersey.

The Cavern Club, Liverpool, England, United Kingdom, Europe
The Cavern Club is a nightclub in Liverpool, England. Opened on Wednesday 16 January 1957, the club had its first performance by The Beatles on 9 February 1961; Brian Epstein first saw them perform there on 9 November 1961. Alan Sytner opened the club, having been inspired by the jazz district in Paris, where there were a number of clubs in cellars. Sytner returned to Liverpool and wanted to open a club similar to Le Caveau in Paris. He eventually found a perfect cellar for his club which had been used as an air raid shelter during the war and opened it on 16 January 1957. The first act to open the club was the Merseysippi Jazz Band. What started as a jazz club eventually became a hangout for skiffle groups. Whilst playing golf with Sytner's father, Dr. Joseph Sytner, Nigel Walley who had left school at 15 to become an apprentice golf professional at the Lee Park Golf Club asked Dr. Sytner if his son could book The Quarrymen at The Cavern, which was one of three jazz clubs he managed. Dr. Sytner suggested that the band should play at the golf club first, so as to assess their talent, which they did. Sytner phoned Walley a week later and offered the band an interlude spot playing skiffle between the performances of two jazz bands at The Cavern, on Wednesday, 7 August 1957. Before the performance, the Quarrymen argued amongst themselves about the set list, as rock 'n roll songs were definitely not allowed at the club, but skiffle was tolerated. After beginning with a skiffle song, John Lennon called for the others to start playing Don't Be Cruel. Davis warned Lennon that the audience would eat you alive, but Lennon ignored this and started playing the song himself, forcing the others to join in. Halfway through, Sytner pushed his way through the audience and handed Lennon a note which read, Cut out the bloody rock 'n roll. The Quarrymen played at The Cavern again on 24 January 1958, which was Paul McCartney's first appearance there. (George Harrison first played there at a lunchtime session on 9 February 1961). Sytner ended up selling the Cavern Club to Ray McFall in 1959, after moving to London. Blues bands and Beat groups began to appear at the club on a regular basis in the early 1960s. The first Beat night was held on 25 May 1960 and featured a performance by Rory Storm and the Hurricanes (which included Ringo Starr as drummer). By early 1961, Bob Wooler had become the full-time compère and organiser of the lunchtime sessions. The Beatles made their first lunchtime appearance at the club on Tuesday 9 February 1961. They had returned to Liverpool from Hamburg, Germany, where they had been playing at the Indra and the Kaiserkeller. Their stage show had been through a lot of changes and some in the audience thought they were watching a German band. From 1961 to 1963 The Beatles made 292 appearances at the club, with their last occurring on 3 August 1963, a month after the band recorded She Loves You and just six months before the Beatles' first trip to the U.S.[citation needed] At the time, Brian Epstein promised the club's owners that the Beatles would return someday, but it was a promise that was never fulfilled.[citation needed] By this time, Beatlemania was sprouting across England, and the small club could no longer satisfy audience demand for the group. During 1962, The Hollies took The Beatles' slot at the Cavern Club. The Beatles had graduated from the club and had been signed to EMI's Parlophone label by producer George Martin. The amount of musical activity in Liverpool and Manchester caused record producers who had previously never ventured very far from London to start looking to the north. In the decade that followed, a wide variety of popular acts appeared at the club, including The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, The Kinks, Elton John, Queen, The Who and John Lee Hooker. Future star Cilla Black worked as the hat-check girl there. A recording studio, Cavern Sound opened in the basement of an adjoining building, run by Nigel Greenberg and Peter Hepworth. The club closed in March 1973, and was filled in during construction work on the Merseyrail underground rail loop. Jan Akkerman with Dutch group Focus were the last to play The Cavern, a few days before the club was shut down in May 1973. In April 1984 the club was taken over by Liverpool F.C. player Tommy Smith in association with Royal Life. Occupying 75% of the original site, it was re-built with many of the original bricks. The new design was to resemble the original as closely as possible. This was a difficult period of massive economic and political change in and around Liverpool and the club only survived until 1989, when it came under financial pressures and closed for 18 months. In 1991, two friends schoolteacher Bill Heckle and taxi driver Dave Jones reopened The Cavern. They still run the club today and are now the longest-running owners in its history.

LONDON WALK | Kensington High Street | England
A first-person perspective London walk tour of Kensington High Street.
Experience all of the sights and sounds as Watched Walker (yes, I’m talking about myself in the third person) takes us on a walking tour through the streets of London, featuring Kensington High Street, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The route begins outside the entrance to Holland Park, then moves east along Kensington High Street, ending outside the entrance to Kensington Gardens, close to Kensington Palace.
Sights seen along the tour include a great variety of shops, bars and restaurants (including Byron Kensington, YO! Sushi, Snow+Rock, Metro Bank, Studio B, COS, McDonald’s, ZARA, American Apparel, TK Maxx, Wagamama), London buses, and the Royal Garden Hotel.
And in each video I've hidden a blinking eye, can you spot it? (It could appear more than once). In addition to the blinking eye, I've also added the Watched Walker logo to various scenes–it could be on buildings, vehicles or any other objects, so keep an eye out for it too!
Footage recorded May 2017.
