Cawsand and Kingsand are twin villages in southeast Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The village is situated on the Rame Peninsula and is in the parish of Maker-with-Rame. Cawsand overlooks Plymouth Sound and adjoins Kingsand, formerly on the border of Devon and Cornwall (the border has since been moved and now is situated on the River Tamar). Once a renowned smuggling village, Cawsand now has three public houses (the Cross Keys Inn, the Devonport Inn and the Halfway house Inn) and a hotel (the Cawsand Bay Hotel).
Cawsand is within Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. There are frequent bus services to the city of Plymouth which is three miles to the north across Plymouth Sound. There is also a ferry service in the summer (from Cawsand beach to Plymouth Hoe) and a pilot gig club (Rame Gig Club). The Rame Peninsula is sometimes known as being in the Forgotten Corner of Cornwall.
Cawsand Fort is sited just above the village. The fort is an 1860s Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom fort built on the site of a 1779 battery to mount about 10 guns to cover the western entrance to Plymouth Sound by the breakwater. Released by the Ministry of Defence in 1926 it remained derelict until it was converted into residential accommodation.

CORNWALL WALK - Cawsand to Queen Adelaide's Grotto
Recently whilst researching for walks for our channel, I found out about an incredible little building, built on the side of rocks on the South West Coastpath between Caswand and Rame Head. This building is a Grotto, built in 1827, called Queen Adelaide's Grotto. I had only seen a few photos online, and I knew it was one of those special places that I had to visit. In this video we walk from Cawsand towards Rame Head following the coastpath, in the lovely refreshing Cornish rain! After finding (by accident!) the Grotto, we return to wander more around Cawsand, this time in the glorious Spring sunshine.
The Battle of Cawsand Bay - The story of the only Luftwaffe Tip and Run raid on Plymouth Sound
In this short film from Plymouth at War, Andy and Dave combine contemporary and modern copyright free photograph and film to narrate the true story of the only Luftwaffe Tip and Run raid on Plymouth Sound during World War Two. As the German war machine advanced across France, the Luftwaffe were able to launch multiple single seat fighter attacks on strategic locations around the coast of South West England. The dramatic scenes which unfolded over the natural amphitheatre of Plymouth Sound on 16 May 1942 are known by those who were there as the Battle of Cawsand Bay. This little know story was researched by Dave for an article in Britain at War magazine published in September 2018.
