MN Mall Stabbing Leaves Somali Community on Edge
(21 Sep 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus063510
The stabbing of 10 people at Crossroads Center Mall is testing city and community leaders' efforts to improve longstanding racial tensions in Minnesota.
The day after Dahir Adan, a Somali-American man attacked at the central Minnesota mall, pickup trucks were spotted driving through predominantly Somali neighborhoods in Minneapolis, honking and waving Confederate flags.
Residents in Somali-American neighborhoods says it highlights the precarious bond between the thousands of Somalis who live in St. Cloud and other city residents.
Somalis in St. Cloud are trying to square the bright, family-minded Dahir Adan, who went to the mall to buy the new iPhone, with the emotionless man who was killed by an off-duty officer and is the subject of a terrorism investigation.
Yahya Iman, 29, says he sometimes played pick-up basketball with Adan, describing him as a quiet and unassuming.
Iman says the attacks have put the Somali community in St. Cloud even more on-guard.
His sister, Farhiya Iman, 26, says racial strife has spanned as long as she moved to Central Minnesota.
That news horrifies Mohamoud Mohamed, who runs a local refugee relief and resettlement organization.
He pledge to unify not just the Somali immigrants, but all of St. Cloud.
Minnesota has the nation's largest Somali community.
Many who fled the long civil war in their east African country were drawn to the state's welcoming social programs.

Obama Praises Minnesota Cop for Stopping Mall Attack
On Monday, President Barack Obama praised an off-duty police officer for saving lives when he shot dead the suspect in a stabbing attack at a mall in Minnesota. The terrorist group ISIS has already claimed responsibility for the attack, which left eight people injured. Jason Falconer, a part time officer who also works as a fire arms instructor, was at the Crossroads Center Mall in St. Cloud on Saturday this past weekend when the attack occurred. Obama who on Monday was in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly, told reporters, Thanks to the quick action of a brave off-duty police officer, the suspect was killed and we avoided more people being hurt.

FBI: Minn. Stabbings Potential Act of Terrorism
(18 Sep 2016) An FBI official says investigators are viewing an attack at a Minnesota mall in which a man stabbed nine people as a possible act of terrorism.
FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Rick Thornton said Sunday that authorities are digging into the suspect's background to determine his possible motivation for Saturday night's attack at the Crossroads Center mall in St. Cloud.
An Islamic State-run news agency claimed the man was a soldier of the Islamic State.
St. Cloud's mayor and police chief praised the swift actions of an off-duty, part-time Avon police officer for shooting and killing the attacker. They identified him as Officer Jason Falconer.
Mayor David Kleis says there were nine people who were hurt, not eight, as authorities previously reported. He says the ninth person went to a hospital and was treated and released. Three of the victims remain hospitalized with injuries that aren't considered life-threatening.

STORYLINE:
The family of the man who carried out the attack on the Minnesota shopping centre on Monday expressed condolences for the injured and anyone else who was impacted by the stabbing.
Authorities are treating Saturday's stabbings as a possible act of terrorism, in part because an Islamic State group-run news agency claimed that the attacker was a soldier of the Islamic State who had heeded the group's calls for attacks in countries that are part of a US-led anti-IS coalition.
Little is known about 20-year-old Dahir Adan, who was identified on Sunday by his father and then by police on Monday night.
He had only a traffic ticket on his record, was apparently out of work after his job as a part-time security guard ended and hadn't enrolled in college since the spring semester.
A spokesman for the family on Monday read out a statement, expressing condolences.
As we mourn the death of our son, Dahir Adan, who was very dear to us, we are in deep shock as everyone else is in the state of Minnesota, the statement said.
A coalition of faith leaders and Minnesota chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations on Monday urged unity in St. Cloud after the stabbings.
Because Adan was Somali, leaders of the state's large Somali community acknowledged the prospect of a long winter for their people after the stabbings, but warned not to quickly accept the terrorism connection.

Jason Falconer: Man who ended Minnesota mall attack a reluctant hero
The stabbing attack at the Crossroads Center mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota, could have been much worse, if not for the actions of an off-duty police officer.
That officer -- identified as Jason Falconer -- fatally shot Dahir Adan on Saturday after Adan had already stabbed nine people and threatened other shoppers.
Here's what we know about Falconer:
He's a firearms training instructor
He owns a firing range and firearms training facility called Tactical Advantage. He's considered an expert in firearms training and education and has helped teach classes on law enforcement skills at St. Cloud State University for nine years, his company website says.
He's a member of the United States Practical Shooters Association and has won medals in various shooting competitions.
He was a former police chief
Falconer was the former police chief of Albany, Minnesota. Now, he works as a part-time officer with the Avon Police Department.
He was shopping at the time of the attack
Falconer was in the mall shopping, and happened to be in right place at the right time, St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis said. The attacker, Adan, confronted Falconer after Adan had already stabbed nine people. Falconer ID'd himself as an officer and when Adan lunged at him, he fired, Kleis said.
Not only did he fire, the suspect went down, came back up on three different occasions, Kleis said.
He protected others from being injured and potentially loss of life.
Clearly, a hero.
He doesn't want any of the spotlight
Don't call Falconer a hero.
I've been trying to stay away from it all, for the time being, he told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
Falconer told the paper he didn't want to talk about the attack but said he wasn't hurt. When a reporter showed up at his door, he didn't answer. The voice mail box for his telephone listing was full, the newspaper said.

Joan Baez - Walls Of Red Wing [HD]
Joan Baez sings the Bob Dylan song 'Walls Of Red Wing' from her 1968 Vanguard album 'Any Day Now'. The video shows pictures of the Red Wing Correctional Facility and the city of Red Wing, Minnesota. Some notes on both from Wikipedia are below. Note that they indicate the song's negative depiction of Red Wing is not completely accurate. The song lyrics are in the video and listed below.
Musicians on the album are Joan Baez – vocals, guitar, Fred Carter – mandolin, Pete Drake – pedal steel guitar, Johnny Gimble – fiddle, Roy Huskey, Jr. – bass, Tommy Jackson – fiddle, Jerry Kennedy – guitar, Jerry Reed – guitar, Harold Bradley – guitar, dobro, Hargus Pig Robbins – piano, Stephen Stills – guitar, Harold Rugg – guitar, dobro, Grady Martin – guitar, Buddy Spicher – fiddle, Norbert Putnam – bass and Kenny Buttrey – drums.
[Vinyl/Lyrics/23-Images/WAV]
Red Wing is a city in Goodhue County, Minnesota, United States, along the upper Mississippi River. The population was 16,459 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Goodhue County. Red Wing is home to the manufacturers of nationally known products: Red Wing Shoes, Riedell Ice and Roller Skates, and Red Wing Stoneware. The Cannon Valley Trail has its eastern terminus in Red Wing. Treasure Island Resort & Casino is operated by the nearby Prairie Island Indian Reservation. The National Trust for Historic Preservation placed Red Wing on its 2008 distinctive destinations list, which adds twelve communities annually nationwide. Red Wing was added for its impressive architecture and enviable natural environment.
The Minnesota Correctional Facility – Red Wing is a state juvenile correctional facility located in Red Wing, Minnesota. As of July, 2010, it housed 111 juvenile males, operating at about half of its licensed capacity. The prison also houses over 40 adult male prisoners in minimum-security, reentry housing. Built in 1889 as the Minnesota State Training School, the original Romanesque building was designed by Warren B. Dunnell, the architect of a number of historical public buildings in Minnesota, including the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children, the Fergus Falls State Hospital Complex, the Minnesota Soldiers' Home Historic District, and the Pillsbury Academy Campus Historic District.
Dylan based Walls of Red Wing on the traditional Scottish folk ballad The Road and the Miles to Dundee, which he may have learned during his trip to London in early 1963, from other aspiring folk singers, such as Martin Carthy. In his narration, Dylan goes to describe a juvenile detention center in Red Wing, Minnesota. The description is hyperbolical, and goes to describe the students there as thrown in like bandits and cast off like criminals, the walls of barbed wire and the fence with electricity's sting, the guards holding their clubs like they were kings, and the supposed dungeon of the building. Despite these harrowing descriptions, Red Wing was not the impenetrable Gothic fortress (as John Bauldie calls it) portrayed in this song.
Walls of Red Wing
Singer - Joan Baez
Oh, the age of the inmates I remember quite freely
No younger than twelve, no older than seventeen
Thrown in like bandits and cast off like criminals
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
From the dirty old mess hall you march to the brick wall
Too weary to talk and too tired to sing
Oh, it's all afternoon you remember your hometown
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
Oh, the gates are cast iron and the walls are barbed wire
Stay far from the fence with electricity sting
And each keep your head down and stay in your number
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
Oh, it's fare thee well to the deep hollow dungeon
Farewell to the boardwalk that takes you to the screen
Farewell to the minutes, they threaten you with it
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
As the rain rattled heavy on the bunkhouse shingles
And the sounds in the night, they made my ears ring
Well the keys of the guards clicked the tune of the morning
Inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing
Oh, some of us will windup In St. Cloud Prison
And some of us will go on to be lawyers and things
And some of us will windup and meet you on your crossroads
From inside the walls, the walls of Red Wing

3/15/2012 Saint Cloud, MN Police Chase Crash
One person is in jail this morning and one Minnesota State Patrol car is wrecked after a high speed police chase along Highway 10 through Saint Cloud, MN and into Clear Lake, MN before crashing. Just before 10:00 PM police were trying to stop a Chevy Pickup truck driving at a high rate of speed south bound on Highway 10. The driver lost control of the truck after trying to turn around after going through the median. No serious injuries were reported by troopers at the scene.
* Update * After checking with the State Patrol, the truck was speeding on U.S. Highway 10 near Benton County Road 33 and refused to stop for a Minnesota State Trooper for speeding.
The driver, Rebecca Lueck, 31, of Ironton, MN tried to out run the the trooper on Highway 10 and additional troopers, Saint Cloud Police and county deputies joined in the chase.
The fleeing driver exited on Minnesota Highway 23 where we saw the chase in progress and as soon as she exited Highway 10, she got right back on Highway 10 at a high rate of speed heading south again and drove upwards to 100 mph.
The chase continued on Highway 10 until reaching a couple of miles south of Clear Lake, MN where the her truck hit stop sticks that deflated the front drivers side tire. Rebecca Lueck, continued driving the disabled truck and went through the center median to try and escape by going north on Highway 10 where she crashed into two trooper vehicles trying to stop her before ending up crashing in the ditch of the northbound lane of Highway 10. After the chase ended, authorities say she had three children in the truck with her, ages 2, 3 and 7. No one was injured.
The three troopers driving the vehicles that were damaged escaped without injuries. There was moderate or minor damage to the troopers' vehicles that is featured in this video.
