Day 18 - Grace Oliver Beach and Crowninsheild (Brown's) Island Marblehead, MA - Bryan and Amy Ruocco
Crowninshield Island, also known as Brown’s Island by the locals, is a small island off the shore of Marblehead, MA. Crowninshield Island was donated to The Trustees of Reservations (TTOR) in 1955 by Mrs. Francis B. Crowninshield who in the early 20th century had planted trees to improve her view from Peaches Point.
The island had been owned by the Brown family from 1797-1918 but the Crowninshields purchased the island from the Browns for $1 in 1918. In honor of Louise E. du Pont Crowninshield, a historic preservationist who married Francis Boardman Crowninshield, a member of the noted Crowninshield family, it was suggested to call it Crowninshield Island, honoring the pioneer in America's historic preservation movement from 1925 until her death in 1958.
This island features a sandy beach, interesting shells, salt marsh and many migrating birds that rest and feed along the shore. Accessible by foot via mudflats, Brown’s Island is often a destination for picnic-lovers and trail walkers.

Day 17 - Gas House Beach and Gerry Island Marblehead MA - Bryan and Amy Ruocco 781.576.9284
Gas House Beach, which overlooks Gerry Island, is accessible via Gas House Lane. The harbor here is known as “Little Harbor” and is one of the oldest sections of the Marblehead waterfront. Gas House Beach actually got its name from the gas generating plant that burned coal to create gas for the town’s street and house lamps. When the tide is low, you can walk along the path of stones to access the island. However, be aware that there is a fair amount of poison ivy!

During the Marblehead Conservancy’s 2016 Annual Meeting at Abbot Library, naturalist and forager, Russ Cohen, delivered a presentation called “The Naturalist’s Kitchen Garden: Adding Native Edible Plants to Your Landscape”. This video, generously provided by Marblehead TV, includes both the presentation and the question and answer session that followed it.

Salem, Massachusetts
Salem is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts, in the United States. The population was 41,340 at the 2010 census. Salem and Lawrence were the county seats of Essex County prior to the abolishment of county government in 1999. Home to Salem State University , the Salem Willows Park and the Peabody Essex Museum , Salem is a residential and tourist area which includes the neighborhoods of Salem Neck, The Point, South Salem and North Salem, Witchcraft Heights, Pickering Wharf, and the McIntire Historic District (named after Salem's famous architect and carver, Samuel McIntire) . Salem was one of the most significant seaports in early America.
Featured notably in Arthur Miller's The Crucible, much of the city's cultural identity is reflective of its role as the location of the Salem witch trials of 1692: Police cars are adorned with witch logos, a local public school is known as the Witchcraft Heights Elementary School, the Salem High School athletic teams are named the Witches; and Gallows Hill, a site of numerous public hangings, is currently used as a playing field for various sports. Tourists know Salem as a mix of important historical sites, New Age and Wiccan boutiques, kitschy Halloween, witch-themed attractions and a vibrant downtown that has more than 60 restaurants, cafes and coffee shops. In 2012, the Retailers Association of Massachusetts chose Salem as the recipient of their inaugural Best Shopping District award.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping!
