Spontaneous surfing trip, Croyde Bay- Surfing the West Coast of England
A quick spontaneous trip to go Surfing in North Devon on the West coast of England. We had a spare couple of Days so decided to have a quick spontaneous trip surfing at Croyde Bay situated on the beautiful West coast of England in Devon.
We decided the night before to go so grabbed a couple of boards, a tent and through it on the roof of my car and drove to the closest point on the west coast to us which happens to be Croyde. I have never surfed here before and after this trip I feel that it is now going to be one of my favourite spots in England to surf!
Managed to grab a campsite for £15 each for the night including parking called surfers Paradise (a very fitting name) Stopped at a Asda on the way for food, stopped in a pub in the Village for a meal that night. 2 days of Surf, 6 hours of driving, 1 night in a tent = a wicked spontaneous surfing trip!
Headed there with Jordan, one of my JunNk guys! Awesome Trip!

2016 European #GromSearch | Croyde, UK
The surfers may have been small in stature, but the surfing and atmosphere was larger than life over the weekend as Croyde played host to the first Grom Search event of 2016. The Rip Curl Grom Search series is renowned globally for being a concoction of all things wonderful in our sport and this event was no different. The competitions not only provides elite level international opportunity, but a friendly, welcoming and enjoyable experience for the youth of surfing.
Surf events in the summer are all about lucking into swell, and Mother Nature turned out to be in a generous but mischievous mood, leading to two full days of surf but a split location event.
Saturday was a day for the mass entry to enjoy with the biggest Grom Search entry to date, resulting in the 20 minute 4 man heats and action from the word go. The sun came out to say hello from time to time and the wind blew and blew as the surfers surfed and surfed some more. Surfers progressed through heats as the tide dropped and although challenging at times, the surf provided relentless scoring potential.
As the solid forecast became reality a call late in the day was made to relocate the entire event site to the nearby more sheltered beach of Puttsborough. An evening of setting up and watching the sets roll in increased the anticipation of what the finals day may hold, and boy did it deliver.
3-5ft pumping high tide surf was the case for most of the Sunday. Putsborough is a natural and stunning amphitheatre which meant that surfers, staff and spectators could watch and admire the courage, commitment and skills of the young surfers from an elevated and close proximity. The competitors from under 12 to under 16 years of age were not only faced with waves way bigger that than themselves, but began to tame it and shred apart the open faces, arising to the challenge in true Grom Search style.
We would like to congratulate Ellie Turner and Seth Morris on taking maximum points in the Under 16 divisions and who now go to Watergate Bay for the final event in search of the two 16’s boys and girl’s tickets to the European finals. Max Hudson and Kitty Brewer taking respective 2nd place finishes and to all the other surfers for earning their Grom Search ranking points.
We would also like to thank the surfers, parents, staff, land owners and supporters for making such an enjoyable and memorable event. We look forward to seeing you in Watergate Bay on August 20th & 21st where UK champions will be crowned.

European #GromSearch STOP5 Croyde (Devon), UK
Ripcurl’s worldwide search for the best junior Surfers commenced for 2015 in the UK over the past weekend, with the Ripcurl Grom Search at Goldcoast Oceanfest.
In a weekend of varied conditions and moments of brilliance, the champions were crowned and the first points awarded across a highly competitive field that featured a strong entry in all 6 divisions.
Day 1 was a dance with conditions, as surfers negotiated the small surf, big tides and varied banks, whilst day 2 provided a drop in wave period but an increase in swell, resulting in a fun day with plenty of waves for all. Come the end of the weekend, following lots of impressive surfing from all the happy Groms, it was finals time.
The girls under 16 title was awarded to Ellie Turner of Bude, who actually won both the under 14’s and 16’s divisions, with Jersey’s Kitty Brewer taking a close 2nd in both divisions also.
The boys under 16’s title was taken by Liam Murray-Strout with confident and powerful surfing in the final, followed by little rippers Kit Innes and Seth Morris and under 14 champion Noah Capps in 4th. Liam’s surfing also earned the Smith Optics move of the day, which is a prize awarded by the judges in recognition of the best surfing on a wave seen throughout the weekend.
The under 14’s boys division was a highly competitive field that ultimately saw a confident Noah Capps take his first Grom Search win. As mentioned, Ellie and Kitty featured in both 14’s and 16’s girl’s finals, as well as Lily Mandeville, showing that this age group has a strong future.
The boys under 12’s final was a close one between second place and local Croyde Grom Jake Arrowsmith but Exeter’s Sam Hearn defeated him with a crucial 0.27 heat score difference. The girls under 12’s was great to see with Bonita Whitelock taking the win and posting a combined heat score of 11.00.
The sunshine came out for the presentations which took place on a packed out Croyde Beach, with great prizes including GPS watches and goodie bags from Ripcurl and Smith Optics. The finalists were then surprised and whisked off to the festival where they were again awarded with their 1st place medals in front of festival goers and projected onto the big screens, an experience they won’t forget soon.
The next event is at Freshwater West, Wales on July 11/12th, entry will open in the coming days.
