Clarion Collection Croydon Park Hotel room tour - Croydon, England, UK GB
The hotel's location is ideal for visitors who are using public transport. The hotel is not in central London but it was extremely easy to get around to all parts of London from East Croydon. If you use the correct exit out of the train station, the hotel is within a 2-minute walk to the hotel. This made my London experience manageable and stress-free. room was a nice size. The whole place is rather old, carpet, furniture, but most of all the bathroom. Lots of rusty spots around the bath/shower area. The sanitary fixtures were extra old. It was hard to turn the shower on and adjust the hot and cold water. After the shower, the water tap ran for a long time, also due to the fact that it was almost impossible to turn the handles off tightly. The toilet was also an issue. The waiting period between flushing was much too long. Modernization is in dire need!

I am a filmmaker and I go anywhere in California by searching for the most unique breathtaking places to film. In fact, California is such an amazing state with so many places to visit and sights to see! But not so many people have the opportunity to go out visiting those places to see because it is so expansive to travel. Instead of traveling, my videos will take you to those places by showing you a lot of scenic sights and landmarks absolutely free.

Purley Way By Air
Paying homage to my local grass site at the former Croydon Aerodrome where I have been kite buggying since 1997.
I've made a few videos here before but this is the first captured from the air, so I thought I'd also include a brief history. .....
Croydon Aerodrome In 1935 the Wallington and Carshalton Times reported that 'The fame of Croydon Airport is world-wide. When his Majesty ascended to the throne twenty-five years ago, the site occupied by the aerodrome was just a stretch of fields. Now it has become a gateway to the Empire.'
Croydon Aerodrome was opened on the 29 March 1920, replacing two earlier First World War airfields which were in use from 1915 and 1918 to famously repel Zeppelin attacks.
Between the wars, the name of Croydon held the promise of glamour and romance. The reason was the presence of Croydon Airport: the stepping-off point to Europe and the world for those who could afford air travel, the hub of the British Empire's air mail services, and the start or finish of many heroic long-distance flights.
In the mid-1920s, the airport was remodelled. The airfield was extended and a new complex of buildings was constructed on the eastern side of the site, adjoining the Purley Way. These included a new terminal building - the first purpose-designed terminal in the world, opened on 2 May 1928 - the Aerodrome Hotel, and hangars.
Many of the great pioneering aviators of the day came to Croydon. They included Alan Cobham, who flew from Croydon to Capetown and back in 1925-6; Charles Lindbergh, who flew into Croydon in 1927, shortly after completing the first solo trans-Atlantic flight; Bert Hinkler, who made the first flight to Australia (Croydon to Darwin) in 1928; Charles Kingsford-Smith, who beat Hinkler's record in 1929; and many others. In 1930, Amy Johnson flew from Croydon to Australia, the first woman to do so, and later returned to Croydon to a rapturous welcome.
However, Croydon Aerodrome wasn't to last. Technical advances meant that post-war airliners were going to be larger and more numerous, and Croydon, with no room for expansion, was too small to cope with the demand. In 1946, Heathrow was designated as London's airport. Although many felt that Croydon had a role to play as an overflow airport, it had been announced by 1952 that it would close. The last scheduled plane flew out on 30 September 1959.
In the 1960s, the western side of the site (in the London Borough of Sutton) was built up as the Roundshaw housing estate; while the eastern section (in the London Borough of Croydon, around the airport buildings) developed as an industrial estate. Many of the road names adopted recall the airport's history: Mollison Drive, Lindbergh Road, Olley Close, Brabazon Avenue etc to the west; and Imperial Way, Lysander Road, Horatius Way and Hannibal Way to the east. In the 1990s, the former terminal building was refurbished as office units, with the name of Airport House, and in 1997 was marked by a restored De Havilland Heron (the model of aircraft that made the last flight out of the airport) mounted on its forecourt. Airport House now includes a Croydon Airport visitors centre. The Airport Hotel survives as the Forte Posthouse. A war memorial to the dead of the Second World War was unveiled on the Purley Way, close to the airport site, in 1991.
Today part of the former airfields opposite Airport House are used for sport and recreation. I discovered this place by chance back in 1997 and have been buggying there with friends ever since. Croydon council remove the goal posts at the end of football season leaving a wide open space to enjoy. By-laws prohibit kite buggying at Purley Way but not specifically. I have been asked to leave just twice in the last 17 years. I enjoy riding there and hope to continue doing so for many years to come by being good ambassadors, taking our rubbish home, steering clear of the Cricket pitch and giving the public a friendly wave and a wide berth. No one loves Purley Way more than we do.
Many thanks to Tim Holyoake for his aerial footage, which up until then I had only ever seen Purley Way from a kind of two dimensional perspective. It's good to see it from the air.
Croydon - Celebrity Flies In (1938)
Soundtrack is currently missing for this item.
Croydon, London.
An aeroplane lands at Croydon airport and the man getting out, a young man with a shy smile, is surrounded by a crowd of well-wishers. He is not recognised by this cataloguer. A policeman stands by, presumably in protection of the man. The plane has 'Daily Express' written on the side.
Note: this may belong to a different issue.

The Southern Railway (SR), sometimes shortened to 'Southern', was a British railway company established in the 1923 Grouping. It linked London with the Channel ports, South West England, South coast resorts and Kent. The railway was formed by the amalgamation of several smaller railway companies, the largest of which were the London & South Western Railway (LSWR), the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSC) and the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR).The construction of what was to become the Southern Railway began in 1838 with the opening of the London and Southampton Railway, which was renamed the London & South Western Railway. Four important railway companies operated along the south coast of England prior to 1923 – the London & South Western Railway (LSWR), the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LBSCR), and the South Eastern Railway and the London Chatham and Dover Railway. (The last two had formed a working union known as the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR) in 1899.) These companies were amalgamated, together with several small independently operated lines and non-working companies, to form the Southern Railway in 1923, which operated 2186 route miles (3518 km) of railway. How to Ride the London Tube
A guide to riding public transportation in London, the London Underground, also known as the London Tube. I tell you everything you need to know to ride the underground trains in London including how to buy tickets, how to plan your trip, and how to find your train.
Overview:
The London Underground, also called “The Tube” -- but never “subway” is generally the quickest mode of transport for journeys to another neighborhood or across town.
Might not be the best for going a short distance though. Locals laugh at tourists who take the tube one stop.
270 stations on 12 lines which are named and colored. Red is the central line.
Trains run 5:30am until Midnight Mon-Thurs, 1am on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday is 6:30am to 11:30pm
Rush hour is 8-10am and 5-7pm
Planning your journey:
Every station has a map, but it’s not to scale, or even geographically correct.
Handy to carry a map with you.
Google Maps is OK. Doesn’t really account for transfer time.
But the citymapper app is way better. Includes walking time, and what part of the train to ride.
Buying a ticket:
Yes you can get a paper ticket, but its 5GBP for one ride. Hardly worth it.
First things first -- Get an Oyster Card -- 5 GBP deposit, then load it up.
Stored value, or a travel pass. (travel pass can be paper)
You can buy it from any tube station, vending machines take bills, coins, and credit card. But it might not take YOUR credit card. Use machines to top up card too.
Getting in:
Every station has ticket gates, find the ones that have an arrow that indicates it is for entry. EIther insert your paper ticket in the slot, or tap your oyster card. Will show the oyster balance. You can also use a contactless credit card, but maybe not YOUR card.
Finding the platform:
Since you planned your route, you’ll know what line you’re taking. Look for the overhead sign, and find the direction (Northbound, Eastbound, etc)
The platforms are well marked and signs indicate the way to the platforms and the destinations served by the various platforms.
Not all trains on a line travel to all stops. Be sure that the train you take travels to your destination by reading the overhead signs or the illuminated sign on the front of the train.
Also make sure you take train on the correct branch.
Riding the train:
Mind the gap getting on.
Sit or stand.
Mind the priority seats, and mind your head. The doors are curved.
Maps inside the train
Stops are well announced and you can see outside the window the stops too.
I usually find it best just to count.
Exiting:
Once you get off the train, you’ll either be connecting or exiting.
If you’re connecting look for the overhead signs for your transfer line
If you’re exiting -- look for the “Way Out” signs.
Make sure you are going out the correct exit
And then just “tap” your way out.
