Croydon is in the London Borough of Croydon spread across both London and Surrey. It's a large town directly to the south of central London in the midst of Bromley, Thornton Heath, Mitcham and Carshalton.
Originally a mediaeval market town, Croydon was the go-to place for the valuable Saffron spice and its place name is believed to be derived from this.
Croydon boasts a large shopping complex in the shape of the Centrale and the Whitgift Centre which was the largest shopping centre in London until 2008.
This Greater London town is distinctive for its TfL Tramlink light rail transport system. Croydon's version of the DLR. It began operating in 2000 as the first London tram system since 1952. All 17 miles of it are now included on the London Tube Map.
The council seems to have given tacit approval of an arts quarter over the last few years. Dozens of striking murals are emerging on walls, shutters and fences around the town centre as part of the 2015 Croydon Mural Project which has produced over 100 murals to date.
Croydon College is a further education college established in 1868 offering BTEC Diplomas, NVQs, A levels and entry level courses. For the last few years, it has maintained an Ofsted rating of 'good'. The BRIT School for performing arts and technology also lives in Croydon and has birthed a slew of notable actors and musicians.
Recently, the popular food, retail and club outlet, Boxpark, forged out of shipping containers, opened a venue in East Croydon. It has revitalised the night life and trendy image among younger punters.
The town is expected to see further changes through its Vision 2020 urban planning initiative which aims on promoting Croydon as a hub of living, retailing, culture and business with £3.5 billion committed to development projects.
The Shirley Windmill has had its fair share of life tribulations. Its been abandoned, set on fire, replaced, eaten by birds, struck by lightning, had limbs broken off and was listed for sale in the paper as an April fool's joke by school pupils in 1971.
In 1803, Croydon opened the worlds first public railway. The Surrey Iron Railway ran from Croydon to Wandsworth to facilitate the area into becoming a growing commuter town.
Today, East Croydon station is one of the U.K.’s busiest non-terminal train stations. Additionally, the large town has a West and South Croydon station but is absent of a North Croydon. There is an express train to Gatwick airport; just one replacement of the now defunct Croydon international airport, which was also the U.K.’s first. It introduced a control tower along with air-traffic control to the world after the first world war.
Neighbouring the station is the iconic 50p building, or as it is properly known, number One Croydon. Completed in 1970, it has 27 multi angular storeys stacked up to a height of 269 feet.
Saffron Square tower is currently Croydon's tallest building at 440 feet and recently won a unique architectural prize for the ugliest building in the UK. A new skyscraper is set to be built at nearly 800 feet. This will exceed the height of One Canada Square in Canary Wharf to become the U.K.’s second tallest building behind The Shard and the highest residential block.
The Fairfield halls arts, entertainment and conference centre opened in 1962. It has hosted The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Pink Floyd and was a setting in the Da Vinci Code film.
Aside from the modern development, Croydon preserves several older structures like the Croydon minster, Addington Palace to the south and Croydon Palace; traditionally the summer residence of the arch bishop of Canterbury for over 500 years.

Step through the gates of the 400 year old Whitgift Almshouses and you will find yourself in a hidden oasis of peace and tranquillity.
The Whitgift Foundation was established by John Whitgift, Archbishop of Canterbury, to provide care for the elderly and education for the young.
As Archbishop, Whitgift spent much of his time travelling between Lambeth, Canterbury and Croydon, favouring the latter as an idyllic summer retreat and residing at the Palace in Croydon (now Old Palace School) - a convenient location near to London, the hive of royal and political activity. A few years after the defeat of the Spanish Armada and with the country plagued by bad harvest and wounded sailors, Whitgift decided to help the needier section of the population. He petitioned for and received permission from Queen Elizabeth I to establish a hospital and school in Croydon.
The two foundation stones of the Hospital of The Holy Trinity, now known as The Almshouses, were laid in March 1596. This philanthropic vision saw the birth of The Whitgift Foundation, leaving a lasting legacy to the people of Croydon through its mission of care for the elderly and education for the young and which lies at the heart of their charitable activity today.
Croydon riots
House of Reeves is a family-run furniture retailer in Croydon, south London, England.
The store was found in 1867 as Ye Olde Curiositie Shoppe on Church Street—opposite the Croydon Parish Church—by Edwin Reeves, a barrel maker from Sherbourne, Dorset. He passed the business to his son, William. The store's name was changed after World War II to E. Reeves Ltd., and was passed to William Jr., then to Maurice Reeves, the company chairman as of 2011.The business is run by Maurice's sons, Trevor and Graham, and another director, David Barnes.Another of Edwin Reeves' great-great-grandsons is Marc Reeves, former editor of the Birmingham Post.
The store became known as the House of Reeves, and in the 1970s the corner on which it is located was listed in the London A to Z as Reeves Corner. It is served by Reeves Corner tram stop. According to The Daily Telegraph, the building was one of the few in Croydon that survived the Luftwaffe's attacks during World War II. One of the company's two adjacent stores was razed to the ground by an arson attack during the 2011 England riots on 8 August 2011. Trevor Reeves vowed that the company, which employs 15 people, would remain in business.
The TMWA Meander 2009
On 20th September 2009 a group of Alumni Trinity Mid Whitgiftians lead by the late Alan Garth planned a commemorative light hearted walk through Croydon from the Whitgift Shopping Centre (formally the site of the Whitgift Middle School) to the site of its foundation at Pump Pail in the South West of Croydon. The walk (or meander, as it was called) was dedicated to the late Martin Garnett and went via the Whitgift Alms Houses in central Croydon, Pump Pail (the site of the original school but now a built up residential area) and ended at Croydon Parish Church where the history of the Church, the town and the Whitgift Foundation was recounted. Those who participated in The Meander were:

The Lilliputters Summer Tour 2018 - Day 4
Day 4 of the Summer Tour was undoubtedly the longest day, as we headed northwards, into the realms of the M25 – London bound! The weather also took a turn for the worse, as we bade farewell to the sunshine – for now at least!
The first tower of the day was Beddington, a mid-weight ten hung in a wobbly tower! The bells were all cast at the Whitechapel foundry, under various Mears founders, and were rehung in 2005 by Taylors. Although not the most tuneful ring of bells, they were certainly colourful! A great number of peals have been rung on these bells, including the first peal of Bristol Surprise Royal, on 10th February 1934. We did not quite manage to repeat this, but did ring Grandsire Caters and more Double Doubles here.
Suitably warmed up, it was time for the highlight of the Tour – the heavy ring of 12 at Croydon Minster. The bells were cast by local founder Gillett & Johnston in 1936, and are tonally excellent; powerful, boomy and awesome! The bells are not very easy to ring, not least with the long draught, but the band performed magnificently, ringing call changes, Plain Hunt, and Grandsire Cinques – simple stuff, within our means, being rung and struck properly.
After a convivial Wetherspoons lunch, it was time for Aaron’s treasure hunt. Sadly, the rain did put a dampener on it, but all teams persevered and completed the challenge – some remarkably quicker than others, it has to be added, and I never want to see the subways of Croydon ever again!
The treasure hunt did take us to the third tower of the day; the slightly lighter twelve at South Croydon. The back 10 were cast in 1912 by Gillett & Johnston, and this tower was the ringing base for many of the foundry’s workers, as the peal boards show. The bells were augmented by Whitechapel in 2001, and form a punchy, clear ring of bells which were very easy to ring well – and indeed, some of our best ringing all week was here., despite the ridiculously long tail ends! A separate video of these will appear at some point, but to whet your appetite, Aaron’s rollercoaster call-changes, forwards/backwards rounds and some Yorkshire Royal all feature here.
A rowdy bus journey, consisting of one massive sing-along, took us back into Sussex for the fourth and final tower of the day; the county’s only 12, East Grinstead. The bells were cast by Eijsbouts of Asten, Holland in 1982 and 1985, and hung by Eayre & Smith – not one of their better hanging jobs, as the back bells will testify! Although tiring, we managed the usual rounds/backrounds and Plain Hunt here, as well as ringing Yorkshire Major, Grandsire Maximus, and even daring to have a go on all 13 bells!
With the early start and late finish, the evening proved to be a quiet affair, with cards and computers back at the Hut. Next up, Day 5 – and did we survive wonderful Worthing?!
Difference Between Eastchurch & Croydon
After living in Croydon for some 30+ years we eventually moved to Eastchurch on the Isle of Sheppey. We quickly found that this village has a very active Parish Council. I was amazed to find they take a very active stance on village life and they are fully aware of everything that goes on within the Parish.
After our first Christmas I opened a letter addressed to both me and my wife informing us that we had been awarded a prize for our garden Christmas light display - amazing - I found out the Parish give out about such 50 such awards.
A certificate of merit and a bottle of wine are presented to residence after Christmas at the village hall by the Mayor of Swale We have been fortunate to have been awarded this for the past 7 years since we moved to Eastchurch. I feel it's time to shout about the merits of a smaller more local community - as it works.
