Croydon is a large town in south London, England, 9.5 miles south of Charing Cross. The principal settlement in the London Borough of Croydon, Croydon is one of the largest commercial districts outside Central London, with an extensive shopping district and night-time economy.
Croydon expanded in the Middle Ages as a market town and a centre for charcoal production, leather tanning and brewing. The Surrey Iron Railway from Croydon to Wandsworth opened in 1803 and was the world's first public railway. Later nineteenth century railway building facilitated Croydon's growth as a commuter town for London. By the early 20th century, Croydon was an important industrial area, known for car manufacture, metal working and Croydon Airport. In the mid 20th century these sectors were replaced by retailing and the service economy, brought about by massive redevelopment which saw the rise of office blocks and the Whitgift Centre, the largest shopping centre in London until 2008. Croydon was amalgamated into Greater London in 1965.
Croydon lies on a transport corridor between central London and the south coast of England, to the north of two gaps in the North Downs, one followed by the A23 Brighton Road through Purley and Merstham and the main railway line and the other by the A22 from Purley to the M25 Godstone interchange. Road traffic is diverted away from a largely pedestrianised town centre, mostly consisting of the North End. East Croydon is a major hub of the national railway transport system, with frequent fast services to central London, Brighton and the south coast. The town is unique in Greater London for its Tramlink light rail transport system.

Restoration of Beckenham Bowie Bandstand
Restoration of Beckenham Bowie bandstand
The Edwardian bandstand, where David Bowie famously performed, needs urgent restoration. The Friends of Croydon Road Recreation Ground (becrec.net) have launched a restoration campaign.
You can support this by visiting spacehive.com/bowiebandstand and pledging a donation.

David Bowie Bandstand Beckenham Bandstand London
In mid-1969, David Bowie was still a long way from superstar status, despite having been in the music business for several years. He was living in Beckenham with a friend Mary Finnigan, and appearing most Sundays at The Three Tuns pub in Beckenham High Street.
The shows began as a way for him and Mary to make a little money and to showcase his talents, but developed into what was christened the Beckenham Arts Lab Growth. I co-hosted these shows and played as a blues duo with my friend Ken Symonds when Bowie had other engagements.
Bowie once told me that he had spent the night in the waiting room on Stockport Station, using his guitar as a pillow after playing at a Folk Club and missing the last train home.
As a further development of the Arts Lab idea, and in the hope of raising money to fund permanent premises, it was decided to organise a free festival at Beckenham Recreation Ground on August 16, 1969. Bowie rang round his friends in the music business but didn't get many positive replies from name artists. For example, the manager of Noel Redding (who had just left the Jimi Hendrix Experience and was now leading a group called Fat Mattress) declaired Noel Redding is a superstar and doesn't play free festivals .
In the end Bowie played solo, and the bill also included singer-songwriters Bridget St John, Kieth Christmas and Toni Visconti. I appeared (invisibly) as a puppeteer in the Brian Cole Puppet Theatre, presenting a rather drug-influenced version of a children's puppet play. There were numerous stalls at the festival selling jewellery, ceramics, herbs and food (including hamburgers cooked in a wheelbarrow by Angela Bowie-to-be).
On the day the weather was exceptionally good - and there was no violence either, thank you. Bowie played many of the tunes which would appear on his Space Oddity album, such as the title track, 'Janine' 'Wide-Eyed Boy From Free Cloud', 'An occasional Dream' and others.
Efforts to restore the historic bandstand where David Bowie performed at the Beckenham Arts Lab Growth Summer Festival in 1969 are being redoubled following the desperate news of his passing in January.
The Bowie Bandstand, once restored, is planned to not only become a permanent and fitting tribute to a superstar musician admired and missed by millions, but hopefully a site where future legends might also one day cut their teeth as well. The Council is continuing to work closely with the magnificent Friends of Croydon Road Recreation Ground and other local partners to raise the funds still needed, which has already been backed by many supporters.
So far £35,000 has been raised towards the restoration project. A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to help raise further funds towards the £93,000 still required.
Supporters can pledge a donation via the green button or by visiting; spacehive.com/bowiebandstand to show their support and also share the news.

'Suffragette City' - The Maggi Ronson Band at Bowie's Beckenham Oddity 2019
Closing 'Bowie's Beckenham Oddity 2019' on Saturday 17 August, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of 'The Growth Summer Festival 1969' ('Memory of a Free Festival'), where a relatively unknown David Bowie performed 'Space Oddity' on his acoustic guitar, is Maggi Ronson, younger sister of legendary guitarist and Bowie collaborator Mick Ronson.
On the eve of the event the bandstand (the stage for this and the original festival) in Croydon Road Recreation Ground was granted Grade II status. There is now a hope that the decaying structure will be saved and restored.
As an aside, I was at the 1969 event......as a very young boy.

Bromley is a district of south east London, England, located 9.3 miles south east of Charing Cross. Bromley is the administrative headquarters of the London Borough of Bromley, and identified as a major metropolitan centre in the London Plan.
Bromley was historically a market town chartered since 1158 and an ancient parish in the county of Kent. Its location on a coaching route and the opening of a railway station in 1858 were key to its development, and the economic history of Bromley is underpinned by a shift from an agrarian village to commerce and retail. As part of the suburban growth of London in the 20th century, Bromley significantly increased in population and was incorporated as a municipal borough in 1903.
Bromley has developed into one of a handful of regionally significant commercial and retail districts outside central London and has formed part of Greater London since 1965. Most of Bromley including the town centre falls under the BR1 postcode district, whereas areas to the west towards Shortlands are part of BR2 instead.
Bromley is located 9.3 miles (15 km) south east of Charing Cross and is one of the major metropolitan centres identified in the London Plan. Bromley is a post town in the BR postcode area, consisting of BR1 and part of the BR2 postcode district. BR1 covers Bromley, Bickley, Sundridge Park and part of Downham; and the BR2 portion covers Hayes, Shortlands, Bickley and Bromley Common.

Beckenham is a post town and district of London in the London Borough of Bromley, England. It borders Beckenham Place Park and Bellingham in the London Borough of Lewisham (to the north) and is centred 8.4 miles (13.5 km) south east of Charing Cross. Historically part of Kent, Beckenham was, until the coming of the railway in 1857, a small village, with most of its land being rural and private parkland. John Cator and his family began the building of villas which led to a rapid increase in population, between 1850 and 1900, from 2,000 to 26,000. Housing and population growth has continued at a lesser pace since 1900.
The town has areas of commerce and industry, principally around the curved network of streets featuring its high street and is served in transport by three main railway stations — nine within the post town — plus towards its western periphery two Tramlink stations. In common with the rest of Bromley, the largest borough of London by area, Beckenham has several pockets of recreational land which are a mixture of sports grounds, fishing ponds and parks

Lyrics:
It's been a long time now, you've been hiding here alone,
But if you never leave, how can you come home?
And if the world outside doesn't frighten you at all,
Why do you leave your dreams hanging with your coat in the hall?
Put them on, step outside, it's a brand new day,
Come alive, come alive.
You're still hiding here with your wishes, in the dark,
Watching them fade away, you're watching a dying spark.
Closing your ears to the whispers, closing your eyes to the light,
Keeping the world at a distance, safe in your lonely night.
Oh, step outside, it's a brand new day,
Come alive, come alive.
Wrapped and folded, stored so neatly, on your shelf,
Cold and chaste, and gone to waste, those kisses you kept to yourself.
Wishes stored like jewellery, saved up for some rainy day,
Put them on and let them shine, let hope not fear show you the way.
Step outside, it's a brand new day,
Come alive, come alive.
Put them on, give yourself a chance,
Don't worry if it's raining, just walk barefoot on the grass,
Step outside, this is a brand new day.
