What's in a Port: Mykonos - Greece
What's in a Port!
The island of Mykonos is one of the most popular Greek islands and it belongs to the Cyclades islands group. Mykonos island, the Ibiza of Greece as it is called, is particularly famous for the picturesque town and the fantastic beaches.
But where will your Cruise ship be docked or anchored? And where are the points of interests in the old town.

Mykonos Beaches Sailaway in Mykonos, Greece - What to Do on Your Day in Port
This is a quick video of a shore excursion we took in Mykonos, Greece. The name of our tour was Mykonos Beaches Sailaway. We booked it onboard for $100 US each. We are on a 10 day Greek Islands cruise on Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas. This tour was not too great. We never hoisted the sails and therefore we did not 'sail'. We motored around to a cove where some people swam in very cold water. Then we motored a little further to a beach where we stayed about an hour. Then back to the ship. We probably could have taken a bus or taxi to the same places for a lot less and spent a lot more time at the beach.
We took the tour to go sailing. We asked the captain on the way back when he was going to put up the sails. He said maybe next time, as if. They also served a snack with a beer. we went to get another and they wanted a Euro.
We do not recommend this shore excursion unless you enjoy motor boating.
Greek Island Cruises. 10 Best Islands, Ports And Things To Do
Greece and the Greek Islands is a wonderful cruising destination, with many cruises starting and ending in Athens and Venice, known as Eastern Mediterranean Cruises. But when you are looking at which cruise line and itinerary to go on your Greek Islands cruise vacation, make sure you are going to the best, most beautiful and interesting islands and ports. Many only go to a few and very busy ones, skipping some of the more appealing ones. In this video I recommend the best islands and ports you should make sure your cruise goes to and what to do on your day in port, including those the cruises often call on when starting or ending in Venice. These include Athens, Katakolon, Crete, Santorini, Mykonos, Patmos, Gythion, Corfu, Kotor and Dubrovnik.

How to Get the Most out of a Greek Cruise Stop in Mykonos
It is day 4 of our Royal Caribbean Greek Cruise and we are on the Island of Mykonos.
Mykonos is known as a glamorous destination for the world's wealthiest and most famous. The island swells with the A-listers, B-listers, C-listers, and D-listers, along with hundreds of thousands of vacationers, hard-partying dance-music junkies, and cruise-shippers for 7 months of the year (April to Oct).
The ship docked in Mykonos New Port and we took the Seabus, which is a small boat taxi at two Euro per person / 4 roundtrip to the old port and town of Chora. We then spent the next 6 to 7 hours exploring the town.
Some spots covered in this video include:
Little Venice in Mykonos Town
Mykonos Windmills
Church of Panagia Paraportiani
Boni's Windmill
Karavaki Restaurant
Island of Delos
Fabrika Bus Station
Mykonos Town Beach
Hidden Cove behind Windmills
Armenistis Lighthouse

Travel tips for Santorini, Greece:
- The last tender boat back to the ship leaves at 4:30.
- Allow ample travel time for your destinations. You need to drive to the popular sites.
- Plan for big lines to get back onto the ship is bonkers for the cable cars and tenders!
- If you can, get premium disembarking packages. You get two tickets that let’s you disembark before everyone else. This saves you so much time! My tour guide told us her coworker was still waiting for their customers to disembark 1 hour later.
- Book a private tour guide to take us around Santorini. It will save you a lot of time.
- Walk in the REVERSE of all of the ship tours in the mornings and you'll skip all of the crowds.
- It cost 6 euros a person for a one way ticket for the Santorini cable car. Remember to bring some cash as it is cash only. For the best view sit on the right side of the gondola. You'll be facing the ocean instead of a hill.
- AVOID walking on the donkey trail. It's slippery and you can easily fall or get kicked by the donkeys. I also wouldn't ride the donkeys as it's expensive and they look miserable.
- I recommend this tour company:
The good thing is because we booked tours from 3 different cities we got a 10% discount.
Top Things to Do and See in Santorini:
- Oia -
Oia is famous for viewing the sunset. I heard it was beautiful because different colors from the sunset bounce off the white buildings. It must be a romantic place to be.
Oia is such a beautiful place to visit. There’s all these little narrow paths everywhere because it helps reduces the wind and also to protect them from pirate attacks. This way they cannot attack with a huge army but instead are forced to enter one by one because the streets are so narrow.
- Black Sand Kamari Beach -
Santorini is unique because it’s one of the few places where you can visit white, black, and red beaches all on one island. Bring towels or a bathing suit as it's a nice, pretty place to relax and enjoy the ocean.
- Pyrgos -
Pyrgos is a typical example of medieval architecture with narrow, twisty streets, fortified walls and hidden passages. If you want peace and quiet away from all the tourists then this town is a must visit. It was mostly just to see the buildings in a much quieter setting compared to Oia.
- Venesantos Winery -
Because it's so windy on Santorini, the farmers and vineyards grow crops in a unique way…for example, the wine grapes are grown on the ground in bunches rather than on vines.
The wine grapes on Santorini are grown with no irrigation! The vines get all their necessary water from “sea fog” which is a mix of humid ocean air and moisture from the active volcano. I loved their wine so much we bought two bottles.
I wish I could buy more but we didn't have any more room left in our suitcases. But they ship their wines to these places - maybe one day in the future I will find their wines there.

Corfu guide, the island that is a magnet to cruise ships
Corfu sits at bottom of the Adriatic just off Albania in the Ionian Sea. Ideally placed to go east to Greece and Turkey or North to Croatia and Venice. It is the first of many Greek islands and a gateway to the Greek Island cruises, certainly used by Marella's Discovery 2 ship that sails from there between June and October with its Aegean Shores, Adriatic Explorer, Iconic Islands, Aegean Meze, and its Journey to Jamaica starts here as it repositions for the Caribbean.

Athens Greece Acropolis Parthenon City Tour - Mediterranean Cruise Aboard Royal Caribbean Serenade
The Acropolis And Parthenon in Athens Greece are some of the most enduring symbols of the ancient world. Our cruise ship stopped in Piraeus for a visit to the Acropolis or Upper City and a short city bus tour drive by some of the other famous sights in Athens.
Recent tough times and unrest are evident the graffiti and overall condition of the city. Athens has seen many periods of tough times over the last 2,000 years including 1687 when the Parthenon was blown up. The Venetians blew up the Parthenon with a direct hit on the Ammunition stockpile being held there. The Venetians welcomed the opportunity to join the offensive against the Turks after two centuries of aggression and conquest leading to the siege of Vienna. The destruction of the Parthenon was a sad day for one of the treasures of the ancient world but it helped to drive the Turkish army out of Greece. Even today, relations between Turkey and Greece are strained.

Mykonos Port Greek Island Virtual Tour 4K
This is a virtual tour around the port of Mykonos Greece. This Greek island is the most expensive and the most populated. The area around there is called Little Venice. Also the most modern but the least equipped to handle all the volume. Surprisingly there is a lot of trash through out the town.
A Taste of Athens - What to do on Your Day in Port
This is a quick video about the shore excursion we took in Athens, Greece. We booked the Taste of Athens tour on the ship. It was $134 US each. It was a pretty good tour. We went up on the Acropolis and walked around the Plaka area.
We were on a 10 day Greek Islands cruise on Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas.
Note : This is the same video as before (again).
We seem to be having some sort of computer issue.
NCL Spirit Cruise - SANTORINI, GREECE - OPA! GREEK CELEBRATION
This is Day 6 of our summer cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line's (NCL) Norwegian Spirit Eastern Mediterranean Cruise departing from Rome (Civitavecchia) Italy.
It is Tuesday June 12, 2018 and we are in Santorini, Greece.
Our excursion was: Greek Style Celebration - Opa! (5.5 hours)The port in Santorini is very small so our ship anchored in the ocean and we took tender boats to the boat. We first visited the Village of Oia which is the place with the iconic white buildings and blue/colored dome tops. The views there were amazing. Then we visited the Pyrgos village is oldest and highest village on island. It was really windy but the view was fantastic and we got another taste of a classic Greek village with narrow windy streets and donkeys. Then we visited a Greek restaurant and ate delicious food and partook in dancing and plate breaking. What an experience! We ended the excursion in Fira where we had to wait over an hour in line in the sun for the cable cars because there were so many people on the island. During this time, we were able to get souvenirs. We ended the day with some nice dinner, a show, and a beautiful sunset.
