Day 65, fellow adventurers!
We are now in Yangon (formerly Rangoon), Myanmar, one of our family's favorite destinations in the world.
We got here at night and so our first stop is to go see the amazing Shwedagon Pagoda that is in Yangon and it's about an hour or so drive for us to get there and it is going to be lit up at night.
The traffic in Yangon is very, very congested.
Recently, so many people have started to come to this country and they have not been able to keep up with the infrastructure.
So it took us almost an hour and a half to get to Shwedagon. But once we got there, it was a site for all to see.
Shwedagon is 98 meters tall and they have put 23 tons of gold on this pagoda over the years.
In fact, every five years they remodel, if you will, and continuous maintenance is being done on this pagoda.
During the day there are individuals that go up in the pagoda and they put gold leaf on it because there's areas where it has worn down or weather or some other thing has caused the gold to peel down and it requires maintenance.
Our guide let us know that Buddhism is NOT a religion.
In fact, he calls it a philosophy and way of life. It emphasizes that you should be focusing on the here and now and that we should forsake our cravings for instant pleasures and that by simply meditating, we can achieve great knowledge.
Our guide told us that when families get together for breakfast, lunch and dinner, they do not talk to one another.
They meditate and eat their food.
Can you imagine that with your family?
Well anyhow, the people are very happy-go-lucky and very peaceful and you can tell that they meditate and that it has made a big impact on them with their mood and soul when you're with them.
So, Shwedagon itself is this huge pagoda and there is all of these little temples all the way around and you have to walk around the temple clockwise.
Around the temple, there's each day of the week and they look at the day of the week where you were born and they have an altar.
At that altar, there is water and that you need to pour water on these different deities.
They also brought a lot of food offerings as well as many flowers.
For example, I was born on a Friday, so there is a Guinea pig that is the Friday person's animal and so you put water over the Guinea pig and all over the Buddhists that are sitting in these altars.
Throughout all of Shwedagon, I would say there's a hundred different temples and altars and it took us about an hour just to walk around it and lightly look at it - but it is one of these amazing sites.
Once you see Shwedagon, it's downhill on pagodas from there because Shwedagon is so exceptional and it's size and beauty with all of the different pagodas and different altars and different temples throughout the area.
You just can't help but people watch as well.
There are all kinds of monks and they are dressed in a maroon colored outfit.
Then there are nuns that are dressed in pink and many people are chanting and reading prayers and worshiping in the altars and in different temples.
They are bringing offerings and flowers and food as well as their prayers.
It's just one of those moments that you just have to take in and frankly you can't get it all while you're there because so much is going on.
So much stimulation and things to look at colors and people and all of the temples.
Everything’s just so much stimulation…it’s hard to take it all in at once. There is such an auspicious feeling in the air when you're there and it's just a sense of awe.
Prior to getting into the temple, you have to take your shoes off so everyone walking around does not have any shoes on and your feet get really dirty.

In closing, my wish for you is that you will love abundantly, protect your health, and be adventurous for life. You are beautiful. Let your light shine, Aloha!

Mandalay
Mandalay
This sprawling cultural centre is the most Burman of Myanmar's cities. It was the last capital of Myanmar before the British took over and is the country's second-largest city. Highlights of Mandalay include Shwenandaw Kyaung, the sole remaining building of the once extravagant moated palace.
Also look out for Mandalay Hill, with its spiralling stairways, temples and sweeping views; and the ancient Rakhine Buddha image at Mahamuni Paya. Bustling markets with produce and handicrafts from all over Upper Myanmar are another feature of Mandalay.
Here are market place photos.

Mandalay to Bagan River Cruise, Myanmar
The Mandalay to Bagan river cruise down the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar is a great experience. The river is a central transportation artery through the country, and the only way to fully appreciate this is by taking the boat to see it for yourself.
The journey between Mandalay and Bagan takes around 11 hours by boat on the river, and a number of different companies offer services. They are all pretty much the same, with this one serving breakfast and lunch on board.
Along the way we stopped off at a village for a quick look around - most likely also to let the engines cool down a little!
This video shows you what the river cruise to Bagan from Mandalay is like. Enjoy!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” and taking more trips together and finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and travel hacking over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling. So we extended our 1 year trip to THREE years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before Nate turns 30 (which is March 20, 2019)! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Traffic in Yangon / Rangoon, Burma
Recorded on 8 March 2014 in Yangon/Rangoon, Burma.
Burma bus tour, ep. 1: monsoon in Rangoon. พม่า, ทัวร์ไหว้พระ
Footage from a bus (and boat) trip in Burma during the rainy season. In this first episode we visit temples and restaurants in and around Rangoon. We see the locals walking, cycling or paddling the flooded sidewalks and small side streets, practically dressed in sarong and carrying their lunch in even more practical metal food containers. The temples and Burmese style Buddha statues we visit in this episode are: the Kyautan Island Pagoda, the Chaukhatgyi Buddha Temple, the Shwethalyaung Buddha Temple, the Kya Khat Wine Monastery, and the Shwemawdaw Pagoda.
The video is captured with a Panasonic NV-GS500 video camera, and edited in Pinnacle Studio.
