ITALY ROAD TRIP VLOG: PART THREE - CINQUE TERRE - TUSCANY - PISA
HELEN and SIMON are Travel Bloggers from the UK – this is PART THREE of a 14-day road trip adventure around Italy. In the final video we continue through Tuscany to Lucca, a quick stop off in Pisa for the obligatory “holding up the Leaning Tower selfie” before visiting the rugged Italian coastline of Cinque Terre and the gorgeous beaches of Tarquinia.
So after over 850 miles in our trusty Spaceships Camper Car, 10 stops, and (many) bottles of wine, we have totally fallen in love with Italy! All the details on where we went, what we did and where we stayed are below!
Thanks for watching. We’d love it if you SUBSCRIBED for more videos! Our next trips include a roadtrip around the USA, India, Sri Lanka, Bali, New Zealand and BEYOND!
A note from Helen:
Hi everyone! We wanted to explore a bit of gorgeous Italy and travelling in a cosy campervan was the most affordable and flexible option! We picked up our camper car in Rome and it was an amazing way to see this stunning country. It was my first visit here and I can't WAIT to go back! I would love to hear your comments on where else in Italy we should see! Happy Travels, Helen

Tuscany Bike Tour Video | Backroads
More than a destination, Tuscany is a sublime experience. Every viewpoint seems to be taken from the page of a picture book - Cypress-lined roads winding past endless vineyards flowing into the horizon. Sunsets that fill the sky. Winding country roads so perfect for biking it's as though they were designed for this purpose alone. Pedal through medieval villages and past elegant farmhouses and villas. Savor the wines and local delicacies that linger in your mind long after you've returned home. It's no wonder that Tuscany captures the heart of every traveler fortunate enough to pass through this magnificent region of Italy.

DRIVING THRU ITALY TO FLORENCE, TUSCANY, ROME, POMPEII, SORRENTO & AMALFI, Our Ancient Civilization Trip
Our two week Ancient Civilization trip continues. We leave Greece and Fly to Italy. We start in Florence. Here we stay at the Sina Villa Medici Marriott Autograph Hotel. This property is in a great location for walking everything in the historic area of Florence. We climbed the duomo (make sure to make your reservations as only so many people can climb at once). We visited the Medici Palazzo (house) and walked the Ponte Vecchio (the bridge with the houses on it). We tried to attend church but with a marathon going on we could not make it as the running line trapped us in the historic center. I had the best truffle pasta at Hostaria Il Desco.
After Florence we loaded into our 9 passenger van, which makes total sense in the USA and not so much in ancient cities; and drove thru Tuscany on our way down to Rome. We did the Chianti region which was beautiful, full of charm, and even though it was rainy and cold the hills were still full of color.
In Rome we stayed at the Marriott Grand Hotel Flora, here we had a two bedroom which was fun to be all together. This hotel is next to the ancient wall and close to the Vatican City. The first morning we headed out early to the Vatican City. Here we had a tour guide so we skipped the line into the museum, saw the Sistine Chapel, St Peters Basilica and admired all the marble.
Afterwards we headed toward the Colosseum and had a 2 hour lunch at a restaurant that really knows how to make yummy soup. Gli Angeletti its on Via dell'Angeletto, 3, Roma
After warming up with soup we headed over to the Colosseum ran around for a bit, then took a crazy cab ride back to the hotel.
That night steer being exhausted from a long day we stayed in with room service.
The next morning we packed up and drove down to Pompeii. This was what Turner really wanted to see on this trip. Pompeii was much larger than I ever thought and we spent about 2 hours walking thru the 165 acre complex.
Then we continued on to Sorrento where we had an AirB&B in the heart of Sorrento. The location and space was great. In fact its by a Super Host and overall it was fine and would work for my family of 6 if we returned.
However, I don't know if I will ever go back to Sorrento or the Amalfi coast. I felt like its this hyped up place but in all honesty there really isn't anything special. We all agreed it felt like the whole area had been turned into a destination for cruise ships, the food isn't great and everything about it feels extremely tourist. Solerno at the end of the coast is actually better. Still we had trouble finding well prepared food. We were not on a budget but seriously finding really well prepared food in Italy was difficult no matter what we spent. Its frustrating because you think Italy will have amazing food flowing everywhere but the truth is that because so many areas only cater to tourists I think they lower their quality and change the authenticity to suit what travelers think they want. I had the best luck with soups. The truffle pasta in Florence and actually the pizza crust in Sorrento was really good.
After Sorrento, we drove back to Rome and took a flight to Istanbul. Turkey is a true highlight of this trip.

Lucca and Pisa from Livorno
Livorno is a regular port of call for cruise ships, giving passengers access to day trips to Florence, Lucca and Pisa. If you've been to Florence before, Lucca is a great and much less crowded alternative. On this trip, Cathy took the train there from Livorno station (a 15 minute taxi ride from the port). As the train stops at Pisa en route to Lucca its easy enough to combine both cities in one day.

Lucca, Italy 2018
Lucca, Italy is a wonderful town that Kathy and I visited in September of 2018. At that time, it was not completely over run by mobs of tourists like Verona, Venice, Sienna, Florence, and Rome were. Its piazzas were a delight, and its architectural treasures were well worth visiting.

Italy vlog part 1 // lucca, florence, pisa, porto venere
vlog #18: july 31 through august 5, 2019. leila flies to Italy for the first time with her family!! part 1 includes Lucca, Montecatini Terme, Florence, and Porto Venere. trying many Italian foods in Italy for the first time (pasta, pizza, focaccia, gelato, etc.)
*disclaimer* this trip was very chaotic and busy so I forgot to mention the historical significance of many places featured in this video.
- Lucca is a small, lesser-known town in the Tuscany region known for its charm and great food.
- Montecatini Alto is actually where we went. It's a medievil town on a tall hill that overlooks Montecatini Terme.
- in Florence we went to the academia museum and saw many pieces of Renaissance art, including the statue of David sculpted by Michelangelo.
- the Duomo in Florence is the most famous cathedral in Italy because of its large dome and architecturally advanced exterior
- Porto Venere is a small town that overlooks the Ligurian sea of Italy
fun fact: my grandmother on my mom's side is from Abruzzo, Italy, so I'm 25% Italian!

- Siena (Piazza del Campo)
- Pisa (Leaning Tower)
- Rome (Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican)
- Venice (Murano, Burano, Torcello)

Mediterranean Cruise day 12 Tuscany Italy, wine tasting
Mediterranean Cruise day 12 Tuscany Italy, wine tasting
For today's adventure we port in Livorno, Gateway to Florence and Pisa. That is what I thought we were going to see but.....
we drove by Pisa, saw the leaning tower from the freeway but didn't stop. We didn't actually get to Florence either...so in the beginning of the video I really had no idea what we were doing.
But we ended up on a really nice drive through the Tuscany countryside.
Stopped in a little town called Montecarlo then went to a winery where we had a nice snack and wine tasting. Of course I had to buy some of that wine too!
Then back to the ship. Only a half day excursion but it was nice.
Wait till you see the sunset I saw from on the ship! It was awesome.

Toscana on the road
A small video of my holiday in Tuscany. Me and my friends walked 4 days for about 90 km between the provinces of Lucca and Siena along the Via Francigena above the ridges of the wonderful Val d'Elsa.
I made this video with my Canon EOS 550D and my Nokia Lumia 520.
