For outsiders,it is a tourist attraction. for the Luhya Community living around it, it is a Cultural and Spiritual heritage. Myths surround the crying stone found in Ilesi, Kakamega. and legend has it that the large rock cannot stop crying. but as is, the stone isn’t crying and it’s much harder to see and those who care for its heritage hope that its replica will keep people from forgetting it. Ilesi crying stone of kakamega, Kenya

At the top of a hill three kilometres south of Kakamega town stands the mysterious Crying Stone of Ilesi, a clearly visible landmark on the left of the highway as one drives towards Kisumu.

The rock formation resembles a solemn head falling on weary shoulders. From its top, ‘tears’ flow down the length of the column, about 40 metres long.

Man Performs Burial Ritual For Living Wife, Children In Kakamega

Residents of Ilesi village near Kakamega's famous crying stone were shocked by a young man's decision to perform a symbolic burial of his wife and two children as a way of forgetting them to pave way for another woman.The bizarre incident saw Antony Lihanda aged 29, a dig 9-foot-deep grave and bury a large tuber representing his estranged ex-wife and two small size tubers to symbolize the children who had left with their mother.

The crying stone is one of the major attractions in Kakamega County. It is famous for the water that flowed on it believed to be tears an locals reveres it as a sacred stone. But as Namukabo Werungah Reports the tears which used to flow every single day of the year is now seasonal and as much as locals have attributed the changes to Cultural beliefs, environmentalist say it is die to climate changes.
