Wellington (Māori: Te Whanganui-a-Tara [tɛ ˈfaŋanʉi a taɾa]) is the capital and second-most populous urban area of New Zealand, with 418,500 residents.[3] It is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. Architectural sights include The Old Government Buildings—one of the largest wooden buildings in the world—as well as the iconic Beehive, the executive wing of the New Zealand Parliament. Wellington is also home to several of the largest and oldest cultural institutions in the nation, such as the National Archives, the National Library, the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, and numerous theatres. It plays host to many artistic and cultural organisations, including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Royal New Zealand Ballet. Wellington's economy is primarily service-based, with an emphasis on finance, business services, and government. It is the centre of New Zealand's film and special effects industries, and increasingly a hub for information technology and innovation,[8] with two public research universities. Wellington is one of New Zealand's chief seaports and serves both domestic and international shipping. The city is served by Wellington International Airport, the third busiest airport in the country. Wellington's transport network includes train and bus lines which reach as far as the Kapiti Coast and the Wairarapa, and ferries connect the city to the South Island.
Described by Lonely Planet in 2013 as the coolest little capital in the world,[9] the emerging world city[10] has grown from a bustling Māori settlement to a small colonial outpost, and from there to an Australasian capital experiencing a remarkable creative resurgence.[11]

Wellington is the political, cultural and culinary capital of Aotearoa as the Māori call New Zealand. The compact city spills out of the mountains and overlooks Cook Strait.

Wellington streets deserted after quake
Wellingtonians wake to disruption after a night of aftershocks following Sunday's 6.5 magnitude quake.
The quake was the strongest of a swarm that were centred in Cook Strait.
Between midnight and 6am today, 34 quakes were recorded in GeoNet's preliminary reading. The largest this morning was a 4.9 quake at 3.15am.
CHANCE OF ANOTHER BIG ONE DIMINISHING
There was now a 10 per cent chance of another big quake, down from last night's prediction that there was a 30 per cent chance of another magnitude 6 or above, Victoria University geophysics professor Euan Smith said this morning.
But there was so much uncertainty about what exactly happened anything was possible.
The earlier quakes were caused by tectonic plates slipping under and over one another.
But last night's 6.5 was the sideways movement of two plates.
''It's an ambiguity we can't resolve ... given the uncertainty in faulting styles has changed it's even more unpredictable than it was.
STAY AT HOME, WELLINGTON WORKERS TOLD
Emergency services said there had been no other reports of damage from this morning's aftershocks.
Yesterday's quake did cause damage around Wellington.
Wellington region civil defence controller Bruce Pepperell has ''strongly advised'' people to stay out of Wellington's central business district this morning until workplaces could be deemed safe.

A BNZ spokeswoman said the worst affected site for the bank was in the Harbour Quays building, off Waterloo Quay. There was broken glass, ceiling panels down, and water damage from sprinklers that went off.
The 1200 staff who worked in the building were working from home today and the Wellington call centre was being diverted to Auckland.
Trains were cancelled with no bus replacements, but police report traffic has been light coming in to the city.
Police said there had been no earthquake related arrests. They would continue to help engineers and council staff with a street-by-street of the CBD today.
Wellington City Council spokesman Richard MacLean said all council buildings including the library, the City Art Gallery, and council offices were closed this morning.
An Insurance Council spokesman this morning said it was too early to put a cost on the quake.
''Given that potential structural damage to buildings and houses will be the most significant cost, policy holders will have to get engineers' reports before they start filing claims with insurers, so it will be a few days before we get a reasonable assessment of the likely cost.''
Willis St's Mercure Hotel, which had thought to have sunk by about 5cm in one corner, was possibly a case of over-reporting of damage and had now been taken off the danger list.

In 1865, Wellington became the capital city of New Zealand, replacing Auckland, where William Hobson had placed the capital in 1841. The Parliament of New Zealand had first met in Wellington on 7 July 1862, on a temporary basis, but Wellington did not become the official capital city for three more years. In November 1863, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Alfred Domett, places a resolution before Parliament (meeting in Auckland) that ... it has become necessary that the seat of government ... should be transferred to some suitable locality in Cook Strait [region]. Apparently, there had been some concerns that the more highly populated South Island (where the goldfields were located) would choose to form a separate colony in the British Empire. Several Commissioners invited from Australia (chosen for their neutral status to help resolve the question) declared that Wellington was a suitable location because of its central location in New Zealand and good harbour. Parliament officially met in Wellington for the first time on 26 July 1865. At that time, the population of Wellington was just 4,900.
As the national capital, Wellington is the location of the highest court of New Zealand, the Supreme Court. The historic former High Court building has been enlarged and restored for the use of the Supreme Court.Government House, the official residence of the Governor-General, is in Newtown, opposite the Basin Reserve.
