STORYLINE:
Pope Benedict XVI travelled on Monday to the Bavarian place of pilgrimage, Altoetting, to hold Mass, with his sentimental homecoming to Bavaria drawing well-wishers and Roman Catholics eager to hear his words.
Benedict left Munich by helicopter for the short journey to the city, where he was met by Bavarian Governor Edmund Stoiber and Wilhelm Schraml, the Bishop of Passau, along with thousands of people eager to catch a glimpse of the 79-year-old pontiff and hear him hold Mass.
Throughout the city - known for its shrines and the statue of a Black Madonna that is believed to have worked miracles - people filled the pavements and squares.
The Kapellplatz square in Altoetting is surrounded by church spires, with the small Chapel of Mercy - where the pope prayed at the beginning of his visit - at one end and the stage where he delivered Mass at the other end.
Cars had to park outside the limits of the town, near the village where the pope was born in 1927, and where his family made several pilgrimages
during his childhood, which the pontiff has said are among his earliest memories.
People lined the route down which the Pope Mobile travelled to the town, as church bells pealed welcoming Benedict's arrival.
Businesses along the route put posters in windows welcoming Benedict.
Pilgrims gathered in the Dultplatz, a square near the papal route, as early as 2:30 a.m. local time (0030 GMT).
Benedict celebrated Mass in front of 70,000 people and listened to a brief prayer for peace tied to the anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks.
At the Mass, Benedict said that Western society - including his fellow Germans - often shut their ears to the Christian message, but that they should re-introduce God into their daily lives.
To make God great means to make room for him in the world, in our own life. To let him into our time and our actions, Benedict told the crowd of people, who stood quietly shoulder-to-shoulder.
The need for Western Europe to return to its Christian roots is one of Benedict's favourite themes, and a message of his visit to his native country - home to a shrinking and liberal Catholic Church and a highly secularised society.
More than 100,000 people leave the German church every year, and only about 14 per cent attend Mass on an average Sunday.
He even paused to bless an infant.
