Chesterfield Canal (Cuckoo Way) - Part 1 - Derbyshire
The Chesterfield Canal traverses through parts of Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, over a distance of 46 miles. For the most part the canal is still navigable, including the whole of the Nottinghamshire section, and a few miles near its end (or beginning) at Chesterfield, Derbyshire, but a section of around 9 miles south west of the Norwood Tunnel (including the tunnel itself) remain un-navigable at present. Plans are in place to restore the whole of the route to a navigable status, and restoration work is making steady progress in that direction.
I walked the whole of the former and current canal route in May and June 2015 with my dog, 'NoNames'. This slideshow video is the first of four, made up from a selection of photographs I took whilst doing the walk.
46 miles along the Cuckoo Way - Chesterfield canal
Over the sunny bank holiday weekend of August 24/25 2019 i decided to walk the 46 mile long Cuckoo Way long distance footpath which follows the course of the Chesterfield canal from Chesterfield to West Stockwith on the river Trent.
Chesterfield Canal 2018
Staveley is a town in Derbyshire, just a short distance from Chesterfield.
We started our day in the lovely surroundings of Staveley Hall where there is a fantastic coffee shop and free parking.
Next stop was the craft shop, and then we followed the footpath from the town to the canal. It is just a couple of minutes walk.
This part of the canal is being restored and is not currently joined to the rest of the network, so there are no boats on it yet. You can walk The Cuckoo Way and join up with the navigable canal, and then go on to the River Trent.
The Cuckoo Way is named after the Cuckoo Boats which used to work on the canal.

Robinsons of Chesterfield Centenary
On July 14, 1939, almost 4,000 employees and shareholders of Robinson and Sons boarded eight trains bound for London.
The trip, taking in major tourist attractions, was organised to celebrate the firm's centenary.
No expense was spared, with breakfast on the train, trips to London Zoo, the Tower of London and evening entertainment at the Albert Hall.

Chesterfield Canal Trust’s cuckoo boat Dawn Rose with work boat Python
Towpath Talk caught up earlier this week (June 5) with the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s cuckoo boat Dawn Rose with work boat Python on their way home from the Erewash Anniversary Gathering which took place at Langley Mill over the spring bank holiday weekend. Travelling abreast, they are pictured completing the turn from the River Trent into West Stockwith Lock, operated by seasonal lock keeper Wilf Warnes, before re-entering home waters and making their way to Clayworth.

This is a journey from one end of the canal to the other, I have captured as much detail as I can. At some stage I will add a commentary, captions on individual slides and some additional pictures I think appropriate.
