Jiaxiu Tower Guiyang Guizhou Province China
Jiaxiu Tower Guiyang Guizhou Province China
Situated on Fuyu Bridge over the Nanming River, the Jiaxiu Tower is one of the symbols of Guiyang. It's also called the First Scholar's Tower.
In 1597, Ming Dynasty, the officer of Guizhou Jiang Dongzhi built a bridge to connect the two banks of Nanming River. Then Jiaxiu Tower was built on the bridge to encourage young scholars to meet together each year at the provincial Confucian examinations. However it was nearly burned to the ground in 1621. After many times of reconstruction, replenishment, alteration, Jiaxiu Tower was finally recovered its original appearance. Jiaxiu Tower stands in the middle of the river with the beautiful Guanyin (a Bodhisattva) temple and Cuiwei Cabinet on its right while pretty Fuyu Bridge is below it. Besides, there is a small pavilion built on the bridge which is called Hanbi Pavilion.
There are several craved stones, poems and couplets in the Jiaxiu Tower. Among them, a long antithetical couplet written by Liu Yushan---a scholar of Qing Dynasty is most famous. It has generalized the landscape and history of Guizhou.
