Scuba Diving with Sharks at Culebra Island, Puerto Rico
Culebra island, Puerto Rico is known for its pristine white sand beaches. Less well known, it is also home to Sharks!
Join me as we scuba dive at Cayo Luis Pena and Carlos Rosario reefs off the coast of Culebra island.
Spoiler alert; this day of diving includes spotted rays, barracudas, massive grey angelfish, Caribbean spiny lobster, tons of tropical fish, and Nurse Sharks!
PSA: No sharks were harmed in the making of this video.
Nurse sharks tend to be shy and typically swim away to avoid confrontation. But don’t let that fool you, these sharks are still dangerous and with several rows of razor sharp teeth. They are graceful swimmers, and slower than larger shark cousins, but still faster and larger than me! Caribbean nurse sharks are usually around 8-9 feet in length, and can grow up to 14 feet.

SCUBA Diving - Culebra Puerto Rico - September 2016
I've been diving in Culebra, PR for 27 years and have participated in collecting photographs and video while diving that have been made into videos for 25 of those years.
Diving for me has become good medicine... it sets me right. It gives me perspective on the rat-race we all tend to get caught up in.
During the last 27 years, I have usually dove with Ron Williams, my SCUBA instructor from 1987, his wife Susan Reid, and always with Gene Thomas of Culebra. I don't dive anywhere else. No one, and I sincerely mean no one, knows the waters and reefs around Culebra like Gene does. This video is from 3 days of diving with just Gene and I.
For the video, I tend to do things on the cheap... no expensive camera rig for me. All footage was shot on an iPhone 6s Plus in a WaterShot Pro housing and a $16 LED dive light... that's it. I dive... we dive... because we love it! I record video and stills so I can share them with others. This is the first time that I have shot the video and stills and assembled the video myself... its a first go... so enjoy it for what it is.
