Pyrgos can found at the highest point of Santorini, with panoramic views of the whole island all the way to the village of Oia. This hillside village was declared a protected settlement in 1995.
Pyrgos is a typical Fortress Settlement of the Cyclades. On the hilltop you can find ruins of Kasteli Castle, one of the five 'kastelia' on the island. Although there are many reports that Pyrgos was the capital of Santorini in the mid 18th century, the truth is that Pyrgos has never been the island's capital.There is a memorial plaque near the entrance to the castle, commemorating those who died in the Second World War.
Megalochori is one of the most picturesque villages on the island. Its existence is recorded back to the 17th century.
Home to historical mansions, old traditional houses, pirate hideaways and wine canavas, it has a history of merchants and wealthy land barons exporting Vinsanto wine that the island still produces. A prominent feature of the historical homes and mansions are the high walls, inner courtyards and solid wooden door entrances, built for privacy and for safety against marauding pirates.
A great effort is been made by local residents and businessmen to preserve the characteristics and beauty of this traditional settlement, and many of the original houses that had fallen into disrepair, have been restored to their former glory.

Villa Ioulia is a modern luxurious villa built in the location of the most elaborate mansion of Pyrgos in the 19th century. Originally built by Zannos, a famous merchant from Pyrgos for one of his daughters, it became an iconic neoclassical mansion that dominated the main street of the settlement.
The original mansion unfortunately collapsed due to the earthquake of 1956 and it was then replaced by a smaller house. Some 60 years later, the iconic house has returned, newly built as a luxurious villa that combines both the modern amenities that one would expect to find today and the incredible history of this family home. The villa boasts museum quality furniture and objects from the 19th century that have been impeccably restored and are evident throughout the interior. At the same time, modern features such as a large Jacuzzi and a modern 210O site veranda have been added in order to enjoy the incredible view of the southern half of the island.
The villa boasts a large living and dining room area, three bedrooms with king size beds and en-suite bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen an additional smaller bedroom with a twin bed and shower and the most impressive main entrance of the island. The outside areas are just as impressive featuring a large private veranda with dining lounge and Jacuzzi areas. Villa Ioulia is located in the village of Pyrgos next to Estia Cultural Centre with easy access and parking.

Katakolo, Pyrgos, Greece, Europe
Katakolo is a seaside town in the municipality of Pyrgos in western Elis, Greece. It is situated on a headland overlooking the Ionian Sea and separating the Gulf of Kyparissia from the rest of the Ionian. It is 11 km west of downtown Pyrgos. The small village of Agios Andreas, which in ancient times was the natural harbour for Ancient Olympia, lies northwest of Katakolo. A railway connects Katakolo with Pyrgos and Olympia, but along with the rest of the rail network in the Peloponnese, services have been suspended since 2011 for economic reasons. In the Middle Ages, Katakolo was the site of the fortress of Pontikon or Pontikokastro (Ποντκόν, Ποντικόκαστρο), which the Frankish rulers of the Principality of Achaea called Beauvoir or Belveder. The fortress was built by the Byzantines and taken over by the Franks ca. 1205. The port of Katakolo is a popular stop for cruise ships, offering an opportunity for passengers to visit the site of Olympia. Low hills with forests surround Katakolo. Visitors here have the opportunity to visit the ancient port of Olympia, the sunken ancient city of Pheia. Ancient Pheia was on the other side of the mountain of Ichthys, now Agios Andreas, within walking distance of Katakolo port. The lighthouse of Katakolo was built in 1865. One of the most important sites of Katakolo is the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology. The remains of the medieval Pontikokastro/Beauvoir castle still stand on a hilltop northeast of the modern port, but the castle is mostly ruined and its original appearance can only be surmised.
