So I went on this biking tour arranged by a company called Culture Shock. It was actually really cool! They showed me stuff in Shanghai that I never had seen before (even though I have lived here for 7 months)

Here is some facts about the tour and company:
Founded in 2015 by young entrepreneurs who wanted an alternative to standard/touristy bike tours, together with Shanghainese local experts they looked into a new option for both short-term visitors and expats living in Shanghai.
Culture Shock experiences are multi-theme & off the beaten path tours allowing guests to enjoy China History/Culture/Food and much more, with an experienced foreign tour leader speaking Mandarin, in just a Half day!
We believe that the discovery of a city and its culture cannot be limited to a few buildings and historic dates.
It requires meeting with its people and letting interactions happen naturally for a full immersion.

Shanghai Vlog: Culture SHOCK at SheShan Basilica!
WARNING: Graphic content at 4:33! Do not watch if you have a sensitive stomach or are easily offended.

September 27, 2014
We took advantage of the good weather by heading back to the Sheshan area of Shanghai for the day. We were last there in August 2014 to spend a day at Playa Maya water park, which was great fun! This time we checked out SheShan Basilica, which is located in SheShan National Forest Park. It was a quick 25-30 minute walk to the Basilica. Our favorite part of the day was actually the walk back to the bus station. We took the scenic route, exiting the park from the west gate and walking around past the south gate and toward the east gate, where we originally entered the park. The road is beautifully lined with trees and very quiet with just a couple cars and bicyclists sharing the road with us.
To get to the park and basilica, take subway line 9 to SheShan Station. On the same side of the road as the metro station, board bus No. 9 and take it three stops to the Forest Hotel stop. The bus ride costs just one RMB! What a bargain!
Apologies for the graphic content at 4:33! We don't mean to offend anyone. We just want to provide a more holistic idea of some of the culture shock that expats have to deal with not only in China but we're sure in any country that is not your own. We also hope our reaction to the incident doesn't offend anyone. It was a genuine reaction caught on camera, a reaction to something we had never seen before. Glo has calmed down, and she is now pretty much over the incident...sort of...LOL.
As always, thank you for watching!!
See you in four days for our next upload!

EP 22 - Culture Shock with Chinese Food
People say that in China people eat everything! All kind of digusting animals, and even dogs!! Well... in fact, most people don't even eat dog, and you will be surprised with the things they don't eat, which we eat and surprise them as much as get surprised with their habbits.

Culture Shock in China!
Sorry I haven't made a video in so long! But I hadn't been feeling like it.
I realized I hadn't made a video specifically about my culture shock in China. Of course, most of this I'm used to or it doesn't really bother me anymore. Please remember that I live in a smaller city in China. You won't necessarily experience this in the larger cities.

Culture Shock - Toilets in China
I learn about squat toilets in China. Oh boy.
So, I'm talking with Eric, who's basically pit boss at GZTV, and we're discussing what aspects of culture I find really shocking in China... and of course, the issue of toilets comes up. We're laughing about this some, but I don't actually expect to be taping anything about the Westerner's experience with squat toilets. Yuck.
Silly me. :)
A month or so later, I come in in the morning and get the day's assignment... and there it is: we're doing toilets on Culture Shock.
I didn't have a hand in the script, and some parts of the writing are terrible (what on earth is that about the 'American expert' at the beginning?) but I thought Connie actually did a good job keeping this episode both lighthearted while exploring the issue in less-than-gruesome detail.
We had a lot of fun with the stuff from 4:30 on. The phone stuff and the smoking stuff are all completely true--we're not exaggerating.
Sadly, there was a 'conversations at the urinal' scene--another frequent occurrence in Chinese men's rooms--that was cut. Kevin pulls up to the urinal right next to mine, engages in rapid conversation, then looks over to check my size. The whole bit was hilarious, but didn't make it past the censors. Too bad, as, from personal experience, it's certainly something that happens in Chinese men's rooms.
Like many foreigners living in China, I had the location of every decent restroom in downtown Guangzhou memorized. It can be really difficult to find washrooms in public areas in China via signage, so you get very accustomed to asking people where the washroom is. Finding it can be an adventure in itself.
The best public washroom I was ever in in China was at the World Trade building in Shanghai. Super high-tech, super clean, super hygienic.
The worst would be a tie between:
1) The washroom in the sports stadium where I went to play soccer, my first night in China. The smell was so overpowering it LITERALLY almost knocked me out. Ever break an ammonia snap right under your nose? Imagine that, but more powerful and with a washroomy smell.
2) The rows of unwalled (completely open!) squat toilets at a gas station on a tour of Guangdong province. I walked in, thought about how badly I needed to go, and then decided I could hold it in the rest of the year if I had to.
Now THAT experience was *real* culture shock.
