Eldsmiðurinn - The Blacksmith
Viking blacksmith. The short film will give you an inside look on how viking blacksmiths looked like in Iceland in the Settlement Age. The film is recorded at Árbæjarsafn or The Reykjavík City Museum. Árbæjarsafn collects and conserves objects from Reykjavík cultural history and carries out research on them, and promulgates knowledge of the history and living conditions of the people of Reykjavík from the Settlement Age to the present day.
They were kind enough to let me in to the museum and film a man called Guðmundur. A man I had never met but heard of. He agreed to meet me and let me to my little project. This is the outcome.

SUMMARY
=======
Icelandic cuisine, the cuisine of Iceland, has a long history. Important parts of Icelandic cuisine are lamb, dairy, and fish, the latter due to Iceland being surrounded by ocean. Popular foods in Iceland include skyr, hangikjöt (smoked lamb), kleinur, laufabrauð, and bollur. Þorramatur is a traditional buffet served at midwinter festivals called Þorrablót; it includes a selection of traditionally cured meat and fish products served with rúgbrauð (dense dark and sweet rye bread) and brennivín (an Icelandic akvavit). The flavors of this traditional country food originates in its preservation methods; pickling in fermented whey or brine, drying, and smoking.
Modern Icelandic chefs usually emphasise the quality of available ingredients rather than age-old cooking traditions and methods. Numerous restaurants in Iceland specialise in seafood. At the annual Food and Fun chef's competition (held since 2004), competitors create innovative dishes with fresh ingredients produced in Iceland. Points of pride are the quality of the lamb meat, seafood, and (more recently) skyr. Other local ingredients include seabirds and waterfowl (including their eggs), salmon and trout, crowberry, blueberry, rhubarb, Iceland moss, wild mushrooms, wild thyme, lovage, angelica, and dried seaweed, as well as a wide array of dairy products.
Because of the history of settlement in a harsh climate, animal products dominate Icelandic cuisine. Popular taste has been developing, however, to become closer to the European norm. As an example, consumption of vegetables has greatly increased in recent decades while consumption of fish has diminished, yet is still far higher than any other developed country at about quadruple the average.

Meet Our Professors: Lisa Arter, English Education
Professor Lisa Arter, Assistant Professor of English
Department
English, College of Humanities and Social Sciences
Where did you grow up?
Colorado and Arizona
When and how did you decide your choice of career?
I’ve always wanted to be a teacher. Decided on English over history at the end of my freshman year. While teaching middle school, I worked with new teachers and felt called to earn my Ph.D. and teach pre-service teachers to be career thrivers. Approximately ½ of all teachers quit within the first few years of their career. I believe that education programs have the ability and obligation to best prepare those entering the field for the realities of the 21st Century classroom.
What do you feel is the most interesting thing about your field?
It’s always changing and yet the same as it has always been. Every year (especially every election) there are new regulations, new curriculum new research, new kids. But at the core, it is a teacher and a student making a connection to improve the world.
Why do you love your field?
I specialize in pre-service teacher education so the thing I love most about English is how literature can connect people across time and place and backgrounds. It calls us to find those things we have in common and build a better future. Every day, all teachers get between their students and evil: abuse, poverty, ignorance, hatred, violence, hunger, and bullets. English teachers are particularly placed to see the pain and worry in our students through their writing and discussions of text and to encourage and support them.
What is your favorite thing to teach about your subject?
Ways to create a classroom environment where future generations can appreciate literature, connect to one another, and make positive choices for their future.
What has been your proudest moment working at SUU?
We have a 100% first-time pass rate for Praxis content and PLT exams (state and national averages are 80%). All of our students receive job offers and many schools are now requesting our students for paid internships in lieu of traditional student teaching. While there is a national teacher shortage, Utah is still able to be choosey about who they hire and our students are in high demand. That speaks well to the quality of our program. Last year, one of our graduates received the Utah state new teacher of the year award. My proudest moment is every graduation when my student becomes my colleague.
What is one thing you wish to tell every student in your class?
I’m pretty open about actually telling all my students what I’m thinking. But for all college students – don’t rush. This is the one time in your life when you are old enough to be independent and young enough to be selfish. Don’t rush through school. Don’t rush into relationships. Don’t rush into problems. The world will speed up and push you along without your help. Slow down and enjoy this time to yourself, to learn and grow and be who you are meant to be before being responsible to and for everyone else. Be brave and honest. And breath.
What do you love about SUU?
I love that I feel I can make a difference by making changes and growing a stronger program for our students which will positively affect the lives of countless kids in their future classrooms. Our campus is a beautiful place filled with beautiful people.

Do Something Different with Jason Mesnick
After a difficult divorce, Jason Mesnick wanted to rediscover himself, rekindle his sense of adventure, and try something new. That was his mantra. And it sparked an unexpected journey that pushed him into the leading role in the 13th season of The Bachelor.
Though he presents himself as a “normal guy” he clearly has lived an extraordinary reality tv experience that so few of us have (and of course we talk about this in depth, how unusual it really was) — but also how in many ways it’s a journey that parallels ours...building a living and a life around the things we love. Jason is a sage when it comes to coaching us to our follow inner instincts, focus on what matters, and take chances to expand our lives in unexpected ways. I’m pretty sure this interview is a side of a reality TV star that few people have ever experienced.
In this episode we also:
* Dig into the very unique world that is The Bachelor TV show. As someone who admittedly doesn’t watch the show (but I’m married to someone who does!) it was a fascinating and at some times head scratching experience receiving very honest account from someone at the epicenter of prime time reality TV.
* Explore Jason’s mindset for vulnerability and overcoming fear and rejection.
* Of course we get some inner scoop on his fantastic relationship with his wife, Molly Mesnick and their entire family
* Hear from Jason what his key takeaways were from the experience, and how he’s parlayed his experience into big success as an entrepreneur in real estate.
Enjoy!
Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. CreativeLive is the world's largest hub for online creative education in photo/video, art/design, music/audio, craft/maker and the ability to make a living in any of those disciplines. They are high quality, highly curated classes taught by the world’s top experts -- Pulitzer, Oscar, Grammy Award winners, New York Times best selling authors and the best entrepreneurs of our times.

LaRouche Case—Robert Mueller's First Hit Job
The use of political hit men—acting at the behest of the British government and an out of control White House—didn't start with the recent illegalities conducted against the campaign and transition of Donald Trump. Now, as a reckoning begins to occur for those who sought to take out the President, that reckoning must include the exoneration of Lyndon LaRouche if it is to be true and faithful to the cause of justice and freedom in the United States.
LaRouche, a genius and a visionary, was intended to be consigned to the realm of bad guys and crazies by the calculated smear campaign which accompanied his prosecution. An objective and fresh examination of his ideas now is vital to the survival of this country and its President, an examination which would follow, most naturally, as the result of removing the completely unjust stain of this prosecution. This is the story of the legal atrocity against this man concocted by Robert Mueller, among others.
