Brazil - Brazil to save endangered indigenous languages | Editor's Pick | 07 Nov 15
Of the around 2,000 indigenous languages thought to have been spoken in what is now Brazil during pre-Columbian times, only around 160 survive today.
Experts warn that as many of 40 percent of those remaining could be lost in the next few decades, as elders die off and young people get more and more access to Brazilian television, the Internet and mobile phones.
A programme spearheaded in part by the United Nations' cultural and educational agency UNESCO has aimed to give nearly three dozen threatened languages here a fighting chance.
With every language that disappears, an entire memory, an entire culture disappears, recently said Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO while in Rio de Janeiro, promoting the programme which was also operated by the Rio de Janeiro Indian Museum and the federal government's FUNAI indigenous affairs agency.
Over the past nearly eight years, the programme has helped 35 tribes transcribe their languages, develop dictionaries and teaching tools for school children and document their rich oral traditions.
While Brazil's indigenous population was thought to have numbered between 3 to 5 million in pre-Columbian days, five centuries of disease, violence and grinding poverty have whittled their population down to under 1 million today, meaning that Brazil's original inhabitants now make up under 0.5 percent of this country of 200 million.
Their population is splintered into 305 tribes, some of which have dwindled to several dozen or even just a handful of members.
The recent World Indigenous Games in the central city of Palmas brought together indigenous people from all over the world.
Though some participants spoke their native languages, most were seen chatting with friends on smartphones and social media sites in Portuguese.

TEHUACALCO TOUR (MOST RECENT) Acapulco Tour Guide ARCHAEOLOGICAL ZONE By TourByVan With Rudy.wmv
Acapulco continues to diversify itself from other tourist destinations throughout Mexico by going beyond the sun and sand to offer travelers an opportunity to experience the culture of the destination and its surrounding region. Trip Advisor
Tehuacalco Archaeological Zone, in Guerrero, is an ancient Yope ceremonial center, one of the few seigniories never dominated by Aztecs, inaugurated in December 16th 2008.
Pyramidal structures, petro glyphs and artificial caves are some of the archaeoastronomical elements present at Tehuacalco, Guerrero archaeological zone, to be operating at the beginning of 2009.
Located 60 minutes away from Acapulco, Pyramidal structures, petro glyphs and caves where Sun cults were celebrated are archaeoastronomical elements of this ancient city, Prehispanic site whose peak occurred between Epiclassic and Early Post Classic periods (650 - 1100 AD).
National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) archaeologist Miguel Perez Negrete, man in charge of the project, stated that main relevance of Tehuacalco lies on the fact of being a Yope culture ceremonial center that possibly because of its peculiar geographical location was a nation that Aztec Empire never was able to subjugate.
Tehuacalco, word related to Nahuatl tehuacalli offers 4 different visits: Prehispanic Monuments, Petroglyphs, Sacred Landscapes and Regional Flora and the Fauna. It is important because it was one of the few seigniories that managed to remain independent from Mexica power, A peculiar characteristic of this archaeological zone is its location between 4 prominent hills, which mark the 4 cardinal points, an important archaeoastronomical site.
Among monumental buildings already consolidated by restoration and conservation experts, the Ballgame court and La Incinera pyramid outstand. In this structure took place Sun, water and time count ceremonies: A glyph related to Venus and the 52 years cycle found here indicates so.
The archaeological zone of Tehuacalco is located near the state capital city of Chilpancingo in the region of the state where the Yope civilization once resided. Believed to be a ceremonial center, the name Tehuacalco has three different meanings in the ancient Nahuatl tongue: a place of the stone box, place of the priests houses and place of the sacred water house.
Yope people constructed their ceremonial center based on astronomical calculations. It is located between 4 mounts that symbolize the cardinal points. Many structures are oriented to the Compuerta Mountain, which helped to mark Equinoxes, agriculture and ritual dates, stated Perez Negrete.
Product of field seasons that began in 2005, 18 structures have been located; an architectonic pattern, as well as the constructive system has been determined based on such findings.
The pre-Hispanic settlement of Tehuacalco is the most recent addition to the many cultural offerings accessible to visitors of Acapulco..
Constructive system is atypical, consisting in Mixteca Facing. Stone slabs were placed in horizontal and vertical ways and united with clay. This walls had an elastic feature, an important issue in this earthquake zone, referred the Guerrero INAH Center archaeologist.
Among monumental buildings already consolidated by restoration and conservation experts, the Ballgame court and La Incinera pyramid outstand. In this structure took place Sun, water and time count ceremonies: A glyph related to Venus and the 52 years cycle found here indicates so.
Occupations at the archaeological city located 50 minutes away from Acapulco, began approximately in 400 of the Common Age. Its peak occurred between Epi Classic and Early Post Classic periods (650 1150 AD), as structures disseminated along 12 hectares reveal.
Petroglyphs related to rites were found here. Piedra de los Pies Pintados (Painted Feet Stone), which presents carved human footprints outstands.
Tehuacallis are hand carved caves where ritual food was offered to deities. 54 of them have been found, some of them with offerings and petroglyphs representing circles and rectangles.
The visit has been designed so architecture and petroglyphs are enjoyed along with nature and landscape. Guerrero State Government provided resources to build the site museum, services area and other infrastructure.

Our visit Rio De Janeiro travel guide documentary, before the Olympics of 2016, covers some of the top attractions including a food guide (best restaurants and street food), top museums and Rio at night. We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities you won't find in a typical Rio De Janeiro tourism brochure or Rio De Janeiro, Brasil city tour.
25 Things to do in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil Travel Guide and Top Attractions Transcript:
First up, we started with the city’s most iconic sight: Christ Redeemer. We boarded the train as soon as the station opened and made our way to the top of Corcovado Mountain. Sometimes the statue can be shielded by fog, but we lucked out with beautiful blue skies and panoramic views of the city as far as the eye could see.
For a bit of colour, we headed over to the Selaron Steps, which is a tiled staircase created by Chilean artist, Jorge Selarón. Initially Selaron would scavenge construction sites looking for tiles, but in later years as his work gained notoriety, travellers began donating tiles.
Since we chose to stay in the neighbourhood of Ipanema, we ended up spending quite a bit of time at Ipanema Beach. We noticed that this beach was really popular for beach football, volleyball, and surfing. And of course, what makes this beach so iconic are its two mountains, known as Dois Irmãos. If you come here on a clear day, you can catch a killer sunset.
No visit to Rio de Janeiro would be complete without heading up Sugarloaf Mountain, so when the skies finally cleared that’s exactly what we did. We paid for our tickets and boarded the cable car for a somewhat unnerving ride up. If you’re scared of heights, this probably isn’t the attraction for you, however, if you manage to make it to the top you get some really cool panoramic views of Rio.
Copacabana Beach is the most famed beach in all of Rio de Janeiro and if you were to visit on a weekend during the summer months you’d find that the place is packed beyond belief. We happened to be here in winter so things were a lot more relaxed, but that didn’t stop visitors from braving the waters.
We did a favela tour to Babilônia and Chapéu Mangueira. On our tour we saw lots of street art, learned about life inside a favela.
And that is a wrap! We hope this video will give you guys some ideas of things to do in Rio de Janeiro on your visit, and for those travellers who have already been there, feel free to add your suggestion of cool activities and attractions in the comments below.
