Cultybraggan lies close to the village of Comrie, in west Perthshire.
It was first used as a prisoner of war(PoW) camp during World War II, and then became an Army training area.
It later housed a Royal Observer Corps (ROC) nuclear monitoring post, and a Regional Government Headquarters (RGHQ).

Cultybraggan Camp 21, near Comrie, Perthshire, has been assessed by Historic Scotland as a Unique Heritage Asset of International Value. It is the last remaining WWII Prisoner of War (PoW) Camp in Scotland. Named PoW Camp No 21, also as the “Black Camp of the North”, it was built in 1941 to house up to 4,000 prisoners. It had a notoriously hard reputation, housing dozens of SS officers, members of the Wehrmacht, Luftwaffe & Marine Corps among others.
After the war, from 1948, it was used by the MOD as a training centre and was touched by every major post-war conflagration including Vietnam and the troubles in Northern Ireland. During this period until its closure in 2004, it was used by many thousands of military personnel from TA, RAF Auxiliary to cadets. It was subsequently bought by Comrie Development Trust, on behalf of the village, in 2007 using community right to buy legislation. It now has mixed uses including allotments, a community orchard, a catering company, cheese-maker, sour-dough baker, artisan workshops and, recently, a Men's Shed.
The Camp comprises a large site of 13.8 hectares including over 80 Nissen huts, sports fields, the last nuclear bunker* built in the U.K. and an assault course and small arms firing range. 
*NB the Nuclear Bunker is now privately owned and not accessible to visitors.

Cultybraggan World War II POW Camp Comrie Perthshire Scotland

Named PoW camp No 21, built in 1941 to house 4,000 Category A prisoners, Cultybraggan was a ' black camp ', holding those considered the most committed and fanatical Nazi PoWs, mainly young Waffen-SS, Fallschirmjäger and U-boat crew. Army, Navy, Air Force and SS prisoners were held in separate compounds, as were the officers. Following the war, in 1949, Cultybraggan was opened as a training camp. It was used by the Regular Army, the Territorial Army and was popular with Cadet units for their annual camps. Cultybraggan is one of the three best preserved purpose-built WWII prisoner of war camps in Britain. A former Nazi soldier has left £384,000 in his will to the Perthshire village where he was held as a prisoner of war during World War Two. Heinrich Steinmeyer was 19 when he was captured in France and held in the PoW camp at Cultybraggan by Comrie.

Built in 1941, PoW camp No 21 at Cultybraggan was designed to hold some 4,000 Category A prisoners. Considered to be the toughest, most committed and fanatical Nazi PoWs, these men had been classified as 'Black' by the British authorities. Many had been captured from the SS and the Afrika Corps. The camp had five separate compounds; one each for the Army, Navy, Air Force and SS prisoners, and one for officers. The March to the Camp

The third in a series of period dances recorded at Cultybraggan PoW Camp Open Day 2013. Fly Right Dance Company taught and demonstrated the dances steps popular in the '40s as part of a day of Living History in which the Scottish re-enactment group, Kampfgruppe Schottland, marched the 2 miles from Comrie railway station the the PoW Camp. The event recreated an almost daily occurrence towards the end of world war 2, which left a deep impression on the history of the village.

Nissen Huts Prisoner Of War Camp Perthshire Scotland

Tour Scotland video of a Nissen Huts at Cultybraggan Prisoner Of War Camp on visit to Comrie, Perthshire. Between April 16 and April 18, 1916, Major Peter Norman Nissen of the 29th Company Royal Engineers of the British Army began to experiment with hut designs. Cultybraggan had almost 100 Nissen Huts housing around 4,000 Category A Prisoners of War, who were thought to be the most extreme Nazi prisoners at the time, requiring a maximum security camp. In 1944 a German prisoner was wrongly accused by fellow inmates of being a British spy, and was taken to a shower block, beaten and hanged. Eight prisoners were taken to London and tried for the murder, all pled not guilty, two were found not guilty, one sentenced to life imprisonment and the final five were hanged in what was reported to be the biggest ever mass execution in the history of the United Kingdom. Rudolph Hess is alleged to have been held at Cultybraggan for one night following his plane crash in Scotland, however this tale has been put down to the tabloid press, he was in fact held some 40 miles away at Buchanan Castle. In 1945 the camp was disbanded, only to reopen as an Army Training Centre in 1949. The camp now belongs to the Comrie Development Trust and is open to the public.

Ever Wanted The Chance To Live Like A German Prisoner Of War?

Members of the public have begun snapping up shares in a unique investment opportunity.

Ten B-listed nissen huts that once held World War II prisoners at Cultybraggan Camp in Scotland are to be turned into self-catering and bunkhouse accommodation.

The Comrie Development Trust (CDT) says locals will be able to cash in on the dark tourism trend for holidaying in unusual places, often associated with death and suffering.

The CDT bought the former Camp 21 for £350,000 in 2007 through a community right-to-buy option after the Ministry of Defence put the site up for sale.

Bill Thow, CDT chairman, is confident the project has captured the public’s imagination and that they’ll back it.

“I was delighted to chair a most successful share launch at the White Church, Comrie, where the audience heard inspiring speeches from Lesley Riddoch (author and journalist) and Kelly McIntyre of Community Shares Scotland,” he said.

“The meeting involved a Q & A session, where the vast majority of the audience expressed great interest and enthusiasm for this most innovative way of seeking funds from the community, both locally and beyond.

“At the moment, the offer has met 12 % of its target sum, with 32 days still to go, and I am confident the full amount will be raised.”

Organisers estimate the project could increase visitor levels to over 15,000 after five years, create the equivalent of 20 full-time jobs and boost the local economy by up to £2 million.
