Diving Curacao - Sun Reef Village & The Beaches 2014
The video was created during our stay in the Sun Reef Village on Curacao in the caribbean sea in nov./dec. 2014. The first part is about the Sun Reef Village and diving at the Housereef. The second part gives impressions about different Shore-Divesides (like Alice in Wonderland or Tugboat) at some of the most beautyful beaches of the caribbean sea. Filmed with an Actionpro X7 and Canon S100 in an Ikelite-Housing.
Curacao Dive Site Guide | Watamula - Westpunt | Dive Curacao - Dutch Caribbean
Epic | Mind Blowing | WOW | Breathtaking are some of the words that scuba divers use to describe this amazing Caribbean diving site located on the West End of Curaçao!
Watamula offers the diver an intense and sometimes overwhelming spectacle starting with a hard coral field, then a soft coral patch, then finally ending with another hard coral field! It is so intense that the diver really does not know where to look first! In addition to the mind blowing coral formations, the intensity of the macro life combined with Ocean Trigger fish, Schools of Chubbs and Porcupine Fish will leave you surfacing wanting to don another tank for more!!
Derives its name from the Dutch word “Watermollen” (Water Mill) because of the how the currents flow in this #1 Boat Diving Site!! You really never understand what the currents will be doing until you check: sometimes they are flowing North/South, other times South/North and other times they are flowing in a circle!!

Curacao Dive Site Guide | Tugboat Shipwreck and Beach | Dive Curacao - Dutch Caribbean
Located in just 5 meters (15ft) of water, this famous tugboat was wrecked just a few yards offshore in a protected bay of Caracasbaai. This site is perfect for divers as well as snorkelers.
Easy to access and easy to find a plethora of critters such as seahorses, octopus, lobsters, napping scorpion fish and the odd nudibranch if you can find it! The tugboat is overgrown with tube sponges and coral and is home to a variety of colorful reef fish too. The resident Majestic blue Parrot Fish and Yellow Tail Snappers guard this site.

Curacao Dive Site Guide | The Blue Room | Dive Curacao - Dutch Caribbean
The Blue Room Curacao - An Essential Curaçao Experience
No big animals, but big experience in an intimate space. The Blue Room is a favorite dive & snorkel experiences in the Caribbean, not just Curaçao. The light in the Blue Room as “perfect.”
Once people started to regularly explore the Blue Room with scuba tanks they discovered more than just the ethereal light. They found surfaces covered by orange cup coral, filled with micro wonders. And then they saw that images of the blue were complemented by a flamboyant orange. Lurking in the shadows year-round you’ll find copper sweepers, a small gold-bronze fish that looks like it’s swimming upside down. And, in the late days of August through September, the Blue Room fills with silversides, which light up the cavern as they move and flow like mercury. Now, more than just an afterthought, the Blue Room has become an essential Curaçao experience. And, that light… unforgettable.

Curacao Dive Site Guide | Tarpon Bridge at Eastpoint (Oostpunt) | Dive Curacao - Dutch Caribbean
The island nation of Curaçao is home to some of the Caribbean's last thriving coral reefs.
In fact... “The coral reefs at Oostpunt represent a window into the past when Caribbean reefs were healthy and vibrant everywhere. We’ve identified an explanation for why Oostpunt’s reefs have remained this way – healthy parents there make lots of babies, while stressed parents on other reefs don’t,” said Dr. Aaron Hartmann
Curacao - a Coral Island in the Heart of the Dutch Caribbean
The observation that coral reefs are declining worldwide has resulted in a myriad of protective measures to reduce the effects of land-based pollutants and to curb over-harvesting in order to enhance coral reefs’ ability to withstand the detrimental effects of climate change whose causes can generally not be dealt with at a local level. In the Caribbean, the reefs of Curaçao stand a good chance of surviving once such protective measures are employed locally. This is currently ongoing and several organizations, such as the Curacao Hospitality and Tourism Association's (CHATA) Dive Task Force, on the island work with other stakeholders to achieve this goal.
For many islands, the realization of the need to take action has come too late and reef systems have collapsed. The result has been losses in tourism and fishing revenue, floods, and deteriorated water quality, which has led to waterborne diseases that affect human health. None of that has happened on Curaçao and as such the island’s reefs remain amongst the best in the Caribbean region.
The small choices we make each day can lead to the kind of world that we all want for the future - Dr. Jane Goodall

Lionfish Curacao | A Sustainable Industry | Dive Curacao
Curaçao Lionfish: An Invasive Species that is making a positive and sustainable economic impact!
The Lionfish, (Pterois volitans and P. miles) is an invasive species that is found in the surrounding waters of Curacao since 2009, which is almost 25 years after they were introduced off the coast of South Florida in 1985. Lionfish were originally from the Indo-Pacific area but now they are well established in The Caribbean Sea, North Western Atlantic, South Western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. Due to the speed at which this species is growing and the way they negatively impact native fish communities, they are now considered as one of the biggest threats to the native reef systems surrounding the beautiful Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao.
Even to this day, the war against Lionfish rages on and continues to challenge hunters who give up their free time to help prevent more damage to the reefs and in turn, the local economy. There are many organised groups and dive schools that provide lessons on how to safely search for and catch Lionfish without disturbing or harming the surrounding reef.
Certain dive schools also teach you how to carefully remove the spines and prepare it, making it the perfect meal for any fish lover.

Curacao Dive Site Guide | Kenepa Grandi - Grote Knip | Dive Curacao - Dutch Caribbean
Drive from the historic Kenepa plantation house to Playa Kenepa nearby. A small cove with lots of shade and white sand, this is one of the prettiest beaches on the island. Head out to the drop-off for scuba diving or snorkeling along the cliffs, where you will find gorgonians, some small caves and schools of fingerlings. Playa Grandi (big beach) is a much larger beach further along the road.
Playa Kenepa beaches are two of the most popular beaches located on Curacao. Playa Kenepa Grandi (Grote Knip) and Playa Kenepa Chiki (Klein Knip) are regularly visited by both tourist and locals. Why? Because the natural beauty of a Caribbean beach is enjoyed by all walks of life.
Playa Kenepa is located on the west side of the island, a less populated and quieter region (Bandabou). Therefore it is the perfect place to to get away from it all and spend a relaxing day on the beach. You will find the stunning coves following a scenic route across Curacao.
Since both beaches are public beaches, no entrance fee payment is required. But there are beachbeds and umbrellas available for rent, along with snorkeling gear, transparent kayaks and paddle boards. (

Curacao Dive Site Guide | Jan Thiel Beach West | Dive Curaçao
Located at Jan Thiel beach, with easy access to get in and out of the water, this is a typical Curacao diving and snorkeling site starting at a sandy plateau going down on a sloping reef. The best treat at the end of the dive will be the curious school of squid looking directly into your eyes.
Outside of the Jan Thiel Bay, you will find a beautiful reef with steep slopes. The reef has a lot of corals and fishes. Very often you will see turtles.
The reef is hilly and slopes down gently. You find a big variety of hard and soft corals, donkey dung sea cucumbers and long spined black sea urchins. Inside the bay, lies the Strea - a wreck of a sailing boat which is a very nice ending to your dive or snorkeling experience.

Curacao Dive Site Guide | Black Coral Garden | Dive Curacao - Dutch Caribbean
Located in the area of Soto - Curacao, between Hell's Corner and Rediho, this dive site is named for the rare and nearly extinct black corals. This west end scuba diving site features black-coral trees, sea fans and bottlebrush.
The skeletons of black corals are dark; hence the description as ‘black,’ but the polyps have varying colors — red, white, orange, green and yellow. Since they lack symbiotic algae, black corals can be found thousands of feet deep.
This dive is generally done parallel with the wall, as an out-and-back to the boat. It’s an easy dive site, with little to no current to speak of when we dove it. As with most wall dives, it’s easy to slip down too deep while admiring all of the beautiful and rare corals and other marine life. We always want to be careful around corals to avoid damaging them, but take extra caution in this spot in particular, as black corals take over a century to re-establish. Admire these rare beauties and keep a close watch on your buoyancy.

Curacao Dive Site Guide | Klein Curacao - a Caribbean Paradise | Dive Curacao - Dutch Caribbean
If you could imagine a picturesque deserted Caribbean island surrounded by warm aquamarine waters, then welcome to Klein Curaçao.
Located approximately 6.5 miles off the eastern tip of Curaçao, this is a very special trip for divers and for snorkelers alike. The locals say that the underwater habitats of Klein Curaçao is where everything is bigger and there is more of it with almost the guarantee of turtle sightings, ocean triggerfish and large groupers.
This tiny, rugged, desolate island of volcanic rock is located off the southeast coast of Curaçao - about one-and-a-half hours by boat.
This is a true Caribbean diving and snorkeling location which is pristine and unspoiled.

Curacao Dive Site Guide | Saba Tugboat | Dive Curacao - Dutch Caribbean
The Saba Tugboat, is a Curaçao shipwreck located between Jan Thiel Bay and the Curacao Sea Aquarium.
In less than 30 feet of water not far off the coast of Curacao sits the Saba, a tugboat that sank quite some time ago. The wheel house is gone and the deck is deteriorating, but it provides reef structure and home for a wide variety of marine life. Blue Chromis, Rock Beauties and other fish have made the Saba their new home.
