A 100 km strip of land sculpted by millennia of glacial action and sea-currents, bringing in tons of sand and silt, the Curonian Spit is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, though an ephemeral one, being constantly threatened by the same natural processes which once formed it. The unique peninsula boasts abundant amber treasures, profits from its situation as a bridge for migrant birds, and the Dancing Forest with trees contorted into extraordinary swirls which scientists attribute to strong winds, but others believe to be the result of an extra-terrestrial visit.

The Curonian Spit (Lithuanian: Kuršių nerija; Russian: Ку́ршская коса́ (Kurshskaya kosa); German: Kurische Nehrung, About this soundGerman pronunciation (help·info); Latvian: Kuršu kāpas) is a 98 km long, thin, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast. Its southern portion lies within Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia and its northern within southwestern Lithuania. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site shared by the two countries.
Ку́ршская коса́ (лит. Kuršių nerija, нем. Kurische Nehrung) — узкая и длинная песчаная полоса суши (коса) саблевидной формы, отделяющая Куршский залив от Балтийского моря. Простирается от города Зеленоградск Калининградской области до города Клайпеда (Смильтине, Литва).
Название косы происходит от названия древних племён куршей, живших здесь до колонизации Пруссии немцами.
Длина косы — 98 километров, ширина колеблется от 400 метров (в районе посёлка Лесной) до 3,8 километра (в районе мыса Бульвикё, чуть севернее Ниды).
В 2000 году Куршская коса включена в список Всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО.
Куршская коса — уникальный природно-антропогенный ландшафт и территория исключительного эстетического значения, крупнейшее песчаное тело, входящее, наряду с Хельской и Балтийской косами, в балтийский комплекс песчаных кос, аналогов которому нет в мире. Высокий уровень биологического разнообразия, обусловленный сочетанием различных ландшафтов — от пустынного (дюны) до тундрового (верховое болото) — даёт представление о важных и длительных экологических и биологических процессах в эволюции и развитии наземных, речных, прибрежных и морских экосистем и сообществ растений и животных. Расположение косы и её рельеф уникальны. Наиболее значительным элементом рельефа косы является сплошная полоса песчаных белых дюн шириной 0,3 — 1 км, частью приближающихся к самым высоким в мире (Ветцекруго[lt] 67,2 м). Куршская коса содержит природные ареалы, наиболее представительные и важные для сохранения биологического разнообразия, включая те из них, где сохраняются исчезающие виды, имеющие выдающееся мировое значение с точки зрения науки и сохранения природы: благодаря своему географическому положению и ориентации с северо-востока на юго-запад она служит коридором для мигрирующих птиц многих видов, пролетающих из северо-западных областей России, Финляндии и стран Балтии в страны Средней и Южной Европы. Ежегодно весной и осенью над косой пролетает от 10 до 20 млн птиц, значительная часть которых останавливается здесь на отдых и кормежку.
Тело косы состоит из песка, покрытого тонким (в несколько сантиметров толщиной) растительным слоем. Образование этого слоя происходило в течение многих десятилетий.
Благоприятные климатические условия позволяют отдыхать на Куршской косе в период с мая по ноябрь.
Фактически коса является полуостровом, так как в районе Клайпеды находится пролив, соединяющий Куршский залив и Балтийское море, по которому в Куршский залив и обратно проходят суда.
На литовской стороне через пролив между косой и городом Клайпеда курсируют пассажирские и автомобильные паромы. Рядом с проливом в старом немецком форте расположен Литовский морской музей.

Nida, Lithuania - Exploring the Curonian Spit sand dunes and beach to the Russian border!
Virtual Tour:
Follow me as I explore the colorful village of Nida, Lithuania and above all the majestic sand dunes of the Curonian Spit.
The itinerary I am following is a loop starting and ending in Nida, first going up the dune to the top and the viewpoint. Then, I follow the road to the campground and the immense beach on the Baltic sea.
After walking to the border with Kaliningrad (Russia), I walk back to the sand dunes to explore them more extensively, until reaching the Curoninan Lagoon again. Finally, I just need to follow this shore all the way back to Nida.
It's a nice walk that will show you most landscapes of the Curoninan Spit, easy to do in a day.
I recommend walking up the dune to the view point in the morning, as the light is the most beautiful at this time - The sun is shining on the waters of the Curoninan Lagoon.

VISITING THE CURONIAN SPIT | Tiny Strip of Land on the Baltic Sea!
During our time in Klaipeda, we got to do something extra special: we visited the Curonian Spit! This narrow strip of land is a national park that stretches 98 km long--the northern half of the land is part of Lithuania, and the southern half is part of Russia.
We stayed on the Lithuania side and spent the day exploring this beautiful national park. With stunning beaches, lush forests, and bright blue waters, we were SO happy we got to see this incredible geographical region for ourselves. We didn't even mind the cold weather!

We are crossing the border Lithuanian border with the Russian region of Kaliningrad. We take a bus from Nida that drops us in the town of Zelenogradsk.
In the bus we are the only non Russian passangers together with two other germans. Although it is not difficult to cross the border you need a Russian visa which is expensive and takes some days if not weeks.
In the border we are forced to go out of the bus and get all our luggage through a security scanner. We also need to fill inmigration forms. Nothing specially traumatic.

The Curonian Spit
In the north-west of Russia, along the Baltic Sea, between Kaliningrad and Lithuanian Klaipeda, stretches a narrow sandy spit, which is considered to be one of the most unique places in Europe
The Curonian Spit is a natural reserve, representing several worlds in miniature. Scientists call it a museum of natural zones, so diverse are the landscapes: from birch forests to sand deserts. And all this on a narrow ribbon of land (at the widest point of the spit reaches 3.8 kilometers, and in the narrowest part - only 400 meters). But the length of this spit is 98 kilometers, and a little less than half passes through the Russian territory. Further - the border post and the Lithuanian border. But it's very difficult to drive along this road, never stopping anywhere for at least an hour, or maybe for a day or two. Literally every kilometer opens a new view: deciduous and coniferous forests, endless bird markets and sand dunes.
