Malanda - Historic Dairy Country of Far North Queensland and Heritage Listed Curtain Fig Tree
Malanda is the heart of Dairy Country on the Atherton Tableland, Far North Queensland Australia. The discovery of Tin and Copper in the Herberton area saw a steady stream of miners traversing the mountains from the coast and Malanda was first developed in the 1900s. In 1908 James English and James Emerson moved into the area and saw the potential for a dairy region. Cattle from Kiama and Richmond River in New South Wales’ and cattle from Lismore QLD were brought into the area. They took 16 months to reach Malanda. By 1912 Malanda had its own butter factory.
In 1910 the saw mill started in the area which supplies wood to build the Malanda Hotel in 1911 and is claimed as the largest wooden structure in Australia. The Post Office opened in January of 1912.
The Curtain Fig Tree is of the strangler fig species. It is one of the largest trees in Tropical North Queensland, Australia. It is a heritage listed tree being registered in 2009 being estimated to be at least 500 years old. The tree is located in a National Park, 1 km north of the town of Yungaburra on the Atherton Tableland.

like most people, this fig tree gave me a opportunity to really embrace the beauty of nature! There is a wooden boardwalk surrounds the tree that you can take picture on any angle still can't show how breath-taking it is.
