How to Get to Machu Picchu from Cusco: Sacred Valley, Peru
If you think you can fly into Cusco and then easily get to Machu Picchu from there, you’re wrong. You have to take a bus and then a train to a small village at the base of Machu Picchu. This video shows you the journey from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, through the Sacred Valley to the basecamp for all visits to Machu Picchu.
**What's going on?**
I'm on a business trip with some friends from school. We're visiting a lot of companies and learning about business in Peru and all of Latin America. Between business visits, we're exploring and eating all the food. :)

**How to get from Cusco to Machu Picchu**
For even more details, read our blog post:
No matter how you go, you will travel through the Sacred Valley. It is gorgeous, so I highly recommend traveling during daylight hours so you can appreciate the beauty.
Option 1: Train only. $75-$115 USD, 3.5-4.5 hours
There is a train straight from Cusco to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu), but it’s usually more expensive than the bus/train combo and less flexible, and the main train station they depart from is Poroy, a 30-minute taxi/uber ride from Cusco. Try to book a train from San Pedro station, which is only 8-minutes from Cusco.
Book your train ticket in advance:
Option 2: Bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu). $5 USD bus + $65 USD Train
Walk 10 minutes south from Plaza de Armas in Cusco to Pavitos street. On Google Maps, look for the “Estacion de colectivos.” It’s a yellow building that says “Real Inka” on it. The colectivos are minibuses and they leave as soon as they’re filled, which can be anywhere from 20-40 minutes between buses. Buses leave from 2:30am to 7pm and they’ll bring you straight to the train station in Ollantaytambo.
We recommend booking your train in advance and then planning backwards for when to get on the minibus in Cusco. The bus is always the same price, but the train tickets vary wildly, from $65 USD to $195 USD. Trains depart Ollantaytambo for Machu Picchu from 5:30am to 10pm.
Real Inka buses:
PeruRail:
Option 3: Private bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, train to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu). $140 USD (for 14 pax) for the bus + $65 USD train
This is what we did because we had a large group and we needed to stop at a few places to make the trip educational (hence the textile “factory” and the salt mines. You can book a private tour through Real Inka or any number of other tour companies.
Here are some time stamps:
Bus Trip (Cusco to Ollantaytambo)
0:23 – Chinchero textile stop
1:46 - Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras)
3:08 - Ollantaytambo
Train (Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu)
4:01 – Train through Sacred Valley
Aguas Calientes
4:55 – Arrival and room tour
5:17 – Exploring Aguas Calientes
5:48 – Plaza de Armas, Virgen del Carmen church
6:38 – Market

What Cusco Can Offer | More Than Just Machu Picchu?
Cusco can offer so much more than tours to Machu Picchu. In this video we explored what is possibly the epicentre of backpacking South America. A very busy place, full of Incan and Spanish Colonial charm this city is great to use as a base if you can avoid getting hassled on the streets for tours, food, massages etc etc...
We arrived to Cusco from our Homestay experience in Lake Titicaca (see previous video). Here we finally dealt with the illnesses we had been having, so we ended up sticking around for a while in Cusco. We also used it as a base for trips to Machu Picchu and the Manu National Park in the Amazon basin.
However, the city itself is worth exploring, a rich history. Join a free walking tour and check our various Incan ruins mixed with Spanish colonial buildings, some of which are used today for western commerce (looking at you, Starbucks).
We enjoyed the variety of food options available and found out Cusco has so much to offer.
We also detailed just what happened when we got ill, thats left till the end... ENJOY!
We are so new to vlog travel, having just provided highlights set to music before (see the SE Asia series). SO this adventure is filmed and edited on the road, in hostels, on the ground with THE most slow WIFI. Having to travel and edit is going to be challenging. We would love for you to follow us in the journey and hope the videos provide good information if you are planning to travel to the area or just interested. If it helps just one of you, then thats amazing!
Join as we learn how to navigate this continent and this world, with a backpack on and camera set to record. Our day to day experiences, the highs and the low. REAL backpacking, hostels, transport.

Peru Travel : Machu Picchu and Cusco
Nestled behind heavy green pastures, Peru’s Machu Picchu allows travelers to literally walk into history. As Peru’s most popular historical site, many tourists flock to the country simply to experience the history of this Inca settlement.
Existing for centuries, the artifacts of Peru’s former Inca Empire can still be found while hiking these grounds. One of the main focal points of Machu Picchu, the Temple of the Sun serves a central role during Peru’s summer solstice. During this time, the sun shines directly through the temple, in complete symmetry with the peak of a nearby mountain.
With a proximity of 50 miles from nearby Cusco, this 15th century stone settlement can be found deep in a high valley, surrounded by the Andes mountains. Many tourists often wonder how to get to Machu Picchu without scaling dangerous mountains in the process.
Modern tourists are transported to the Inca stronghold through a four hour train ride and a handful of miles walking along a road built within the mountains. Many backpackers opt for the traditional weeklong hike through the Inca Trail in order to reach this breathtaking destination.
Tourists will notice the over 700 terraces still present at Machu Picchu. These terraces were used for soil preservation, agricultural pursuits and to distribute water throughout the settlement. Terraces also assisted in water conservation and decreased the chance of erosion to the settlement.
Travelers to the region also make a stop in Cusco a must on their to do list. In Cusco, tourists will notice the fusion of ancient Andean culture with the fingerprints of Spain’s colonial conquest of the country. Today, Cusco serves as a must see tourist destination for travelers, with many ruins and natural wonders to be enjoyed while in Peru.

Machupicchu Cusco Peru - Trip from the United States - Travel to Peru American
Hello, my name is Jeffrey Reed. I came to Cusco in Peru from the United States and I think Cusco is a very cultural and rich place. I think the most important message is that there is more to Cusco than Machupicchu. I think that most people find out about Cusco when they make their travel plans to visit Machupicchu and I think that it is a shame! More people need to learn about just coming to Cusco and Scheduling tours in 360 degrees; all around the city of Cusco there's something interesting to do something different, a different aspect of traditional culture. Tipón is one that comes to mind which is the ancient water temple, there are just so many beautiful things to do here and the culture is alive and well the traditional culture; it goes back thousands and thousands of years, it is very strong here in Cusco and different parts of Peru generally. I am very happy to be part of it and to have known this area and you have to come here to understand it!

FBC Peru Trip June 2019
In June of 2019, a group of 10 travelers, mostly from First Baptist Church of Owensboro, Ky. journeyed to Peru on an Overseas Adventure Travel sponsored tour. We flew from Atlanta, Ga. to Lima Peru. Stayed there 2 days in the Miraflores district and saw several tourist sites there and also took a bus tour south down the coast to a fishing market as well as walking around the governmental plaza back in Lima. Also explored an ancient pre-Inca Mud brick pyramid site at Huaca Pucllana.
Next flew to the ancient Inca capital and modern city of Cuzco. Then by bus we traveled down to lower elevations through the Sacred Inca Valley along the Urubamba river. Towns and ruins we stopped at along the way included Pisac, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo, and Aguas Calientes at the base of Machu Picchu. Two visits up to Machu Picchu on consecutive days allowed a pretty thorough exploration of the ruins there, and included plenty of hiking up the Gateway of the Sun along an ancient Inca Trail, and another trail to an ancient bridge the Incas used to escape the suspected Spanish attack they anticipated in the late 1500's.
Later we left Aguas Calientes by train just as we had arrived and return to deboard at Olantaytambo. A bus then took us back up the Urubamba Valley and we crossed over high mountain plains through the countryside on our goal of returning to Cusco for another couple of days.
In Cusco we expored around the town including the San Pedro Market, a couple of churches built on ancient Inca sites, a few Museums, and even traveled into the Chinchero villages nearby. We saw more Inca ruins, visited an elementary school with first through third graders, also a weavers coop, and Oroposa Chuta bread ovens, before seeing a Shaman ritual and then returning to Cuzco.
We experienced a few cultural events called a day in the Life of typical Peruvian people and what they do.
Finally we departed by plane back to Lima for our international flight returning to Atlanta.

Train Ride from Cusco to Machu Picchu, Peru
Visitors to Machu Picchu in Peru can get there one of two ways - by hiking for either four or seven days, or on a train that can be boarded at either Cusco or Ollantaytambo. I took Peru Rail's Vistadome, which provides large side windows and overhead skylights that give the best possible views of this incredible journey through the Sacred Valley and the cloud forest that is home to the ancient Inca ruins. The video shows the train and the services it provides, including the zig zag tracks that allow it to descend the steep grade into the river valley, where spectacled bears roam the banks and orchids carpet the trees. The price for the 3.5 hour, 57 mile trip was approximately $75 USD each way. To read more about my round-the-world travels, visit my blog,
