1955 Chevy at the hotel in Varadero, Cuba

Quick note: I saw after publishing '2104' was put down instead of '2014'. Sorry, I am dyslexic and try to catch everything, stuff does get away from time to time. But I do bet a 1955 Chevy or two will still be around in 2104. OK, on with the narrative: As 'Free Enterprise' opens up to the Cuban people, more and more privately owned vehicles are being turned into taxicabs for the many tourists who frequent the island, including Varadero. Some are in better shape then others, and it is getting a little easier now that Cuban Americans are allowed to bring car parts down to family members on the island. For example, 5 tires are allowed at a time to be brought in. This pretty decent 1955 Chevy has a mixture of home made or converted parts, as well as several recognizable aftermarket parts, such as steering column and wheels affixed to it. This clip was filmed in irony exactly a month ago to the day it is being posted. Things are changing on the island, but much still has to be done before the people have full freedoms. Cuba has a two-currency economy - The CUC, which is forbidden to its people, is used by tourists - but every Cuban seems to have! They are supposed to use the much less valuable local Peso. To note, the CUC follows the US Dollar (how ironic!) and the Cuban government gets quite a chunk of change from the people by much taxation on the new 'Free Enterprise' system coming more and more into place. Increased US investment doesn't mean things will get better for the average Cuban it just means the government will get wealthier. Until the Cuban peso can be freely traded, meaning by the people and world markets, and many other restrictions to the people are removed, the Cuban people won't be seeing a heck of a lot of benefits from the latest announcements this past week. Our American friends are to be lauded for taking a step, but the caution and eyebrows raised are a good thing, as it has to be made certain that the folks down there are being treated right and will benefit.

We took a 55 Chevy taxi for a 2 day trip and I got to drive for awhile. This car had a 4 cyc diesel engine and auto trans. but still performed well I will put more on about this car also

Our trip was well coordinated with the best local spots and we were really able to immerse ourselves in the Cuban culture while we were there. The Four Wives Cuba (who worked on organizing the Rolling Stones concert in Cuba, the filming of Fast and Furious in Cuba, and organized Madonna’s recent birthday trip to Cuba) helped organize our trip, they offer luxury experiences within Havana and they customize the trip to what you hope to do while visiting.
