Sailing Through Greece: Cyclades E19 Amorgos
Next episode: Cyclades, E20 Kythnos
This episode: Cyclades, E19 from Santorini we sail to Schinoussa and to Amorgos with the meltemi. Schinoussa lies south of the island of Naxos, The population was 256 inhabitants at the 2011 census, since the 11th century the island has been the property of the Hozoviotissa Monastery on the nearby island of Amorgos. It owes its name to the mastic tree shrub that grows all over the island. The landscape has low green hills and small valleys between them, with many sandy beaches with turquoise water sparkling under the hot sun. Livadi Beach is located on the southwestern coast of the island and is just 850m from the town of Chora.
Throughout history, Amorgos was also known as Yperia, Patagy, or Platagy, Pagali, Psichia and Karkisia. It features a lot of remnants of ancient civilizations. . Amorgos is distinguished by the size and quality of the walls surrounding the city of Arkesini, by the ancient towers whose remains are scattered all over the island, by the ancient tombs, the stone tools, the inscriptions, the vases and by other antiquities. The island was featured in Luc Besson's film The Big Blue. Agia Anna and the monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa can be seen in the film. Katapola, one of Amorgos' two harbours, is a small, vibrant community, drenched in the cycladic sun. Its waterfront is lined with cafes, tavernas and moorings for fishing boats and visiting sailing boats. On the hill above Katapola, the excavations of the ancient city of Minoa are of great interest to the visitor as they provide the thread to a continuous 3000 year existence. Next to Katapola, you find the small hamlet of Rahidi, dominated by the large church of Agios Georgios. The most picturesque part of the bay is the hamlet of Ksilokeratidi, opposite Katapola, with its pretty narrow streets and its traditional tavernas.
The Meltemi are the strong, dry north winds of the Aegean Sea, which blow from about mid-May to mid-September.They are at their strongest in the afternoon and often die down at night, but sometimes meltemi winds last for days without a break. . These winds are dangerous to sailors because they can come up in clear weather without warning and can blow at 7-8 Beaufort. Some yachts and most inter island ferries cannot sail under such conditions. The Cyclades comprise about 220 islands, the major ones being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Eschati, Ios, Kea, Kimolos,Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Folegandros, Serifos, Sifnos, Sikinos, Syros, Tinos, and Thira or Santoríni. The name Cyclades refers to the islands forming a circle (circular islands) around the sacred island of Delos. Most of the smaller islands are uninhabited.

Ending nearly a month living a dream, island hopping in the Aegean Sea, brings me to my last two islands. The first island in this video, is one of three of my most anticipated islands to visit. Arriving at Aegiali port, I got comfortable in my not so cheap hotel, but had an incredible view of the harbour and sunset.
My time in Amorgos was not just incredible because of the sights, but because of the friends I made while I was there. After successfully hitchhiking my way across the island, I made my way to Chora, one of the most beautiful in the Cyclades with a town layout that is easy to get lost in. Here is where I met up with my newly made friends. I managed to visit the oldest active monastery in Greece, Hozoviotissa. Below the monastery, I joined my friends on an amazing swim at Agia Anna beach with the most incredible views of the north part of the island.
On another full day, we rode down to Mouros beach to cliff dive, swim in and out of caves, take in beautiful views of the island, as well as feast on some amazing dished complimented with some Ouzo. Concluding my amazing time in Amorgos, I made my way over to the port town of Katapola where I saw my buddies for the last time, before heading off to my last and final island.
Santorini is certainly an overcrowded island with tourists from all around the world. Chaos and clutters takes up much of the island in early August, the height of the tourist season. However, when you disregard that and pay attention to the scenery, you are easily blown out of this world. Santorini is a volcanic gem of the Mediterranean, with blue and white villages capped at the top of the caldera with views of the volcano wherever you go on the island.
Hitchhiking as like every other Greek island worked well for me as I made it to the south hopping between a red and black beach. The highlight of my time here was not just roaming the imfamous streets of Oia, but catching the most incredible sunset on an unfinished cliffside resort that I had all to myself. Roaming in and out of the structure only to always be greeted by the setting sun and the orange tint over the volcano, caldera, and the sea. This was the perfect way, to end one of my biggest dreams, of my life.

HoneyMoon Greek Islands part 2
Again more nudity and some cursing for all to enjoy!!! This is just the first part of our honeymoon video from the Greek Islands.
Boat trip - Naxos Iraklia Koufonissia
Iraklia is a very small Greek island south of Naxos with approximately 300 inhabitants. It's a nice place for a one-day trip or for people who seek rest. Peace and quiet and unspoiled beauty await visitors to the island of Iraklia.
Koufonissia are two small islands in the Cyclades, they lie at the southeast of the island of Naxos, west of Amorgos and north of Ios. They lie next to each other, with a distance of only 200 meters (650 ft) between them.
Mykonos Travel 2017
Mykonos is a popular tourist destination in the Greek islands of the Cyclades group, situated in the middle of the Aegean Sea. Mykonos is located south of Tinos, east of Syros and north of Paros and Naxos.
Mykonos is famed as a cosmopolitan destination amongst the Greek islands and widely recognised as one of the great travel meccas. It is one of the most touristed islands in the Aegean. This means that visitors should be prepared for loud dance clubs on parts of the island, an option to have 'English' breakfasts that could consist of an egg, some bacon and a few rolls with butter, and some over-priced merchandise. Mykonos, along with Santorini, is more expensive than other Greek islands.
If you have a room in the centre of town, expect to be woken by people going about their business in the early hours of the morning - this could be people arriving back from a nights clubbing or local bakers who arrive very early for work every day of the week. Although a lot of the streets in the main town are closed to traffic, locals get around on mopeds/motorbikes and on other motorised contraptions, and once again, they make quite a lot of noise in the early hours of the morning if they go past your open window. If you don't have a room that offers air conditioning and you are planning to keep your windows open at night, some ear-plugs might be an idea if you are a light sleeper.
It would appear that on most days of the week, there will be at least one cruise ship docked with people off the ships either driven close to the town via coach or brought into the main harbour by smaller boats. On these days, the small narrow streets of Myknonos get quite crowded. There can be up to three cruise ships in the harbour or anchored near by, but one local shop keeper stated that times have changed and there are not as many ships as there used to be: on a good day in the past, there could be as many as 7 ships docked. Most ships depart before dusk, but for the ones that don't expect the passengers to jocky for position with other tourists in the area by Little Venice to get a view of the setting sun.

Naxos Andros
Naxos (in Greek, Νάξος) is a Greek island, the largest island (429 km2 (166 sq mi)) in the Cyclades island group in the Aegean. It was the centre of archaic Cycladic culture.
The island comprises the two municipalities of Naxos and Drymalia. The largest town and capital of the island is Hora or Naxos City, with 6,533 inhabitants (2001 census). The main villages are Filoti, Apiranthos, Vivlos, Agios Arsenios, Koronos and Glinado.
Naxos is a popular tourist destination, with several easily accessible ruins. It has a number of beautiful beaches, such as those at Agia Anna, Agios Prokopios, Alikos, Kastraki, Mikri Vigla, Plaka, and Agios Georgios, most of them near Hora. Naxos is the most fertile island of the Cyclades. It has a good supply of water in a region where water is usually inadequate. Mount Zas (999 metres) is the highest peak in the Cyclades, and tends to trap the clouds, permitting greater rainfall. This has made agriculture an important economic sector with various vegetable and fruit crops as well as cattle breeding, making Naxos the most self sufficient island in the Cyclades. Naxos is also known within Greece for its potatoes.
Andros, or Andro (Greek: Άνδρος), an island of the Greek archipelago, the most northerly of the Cyclades, approximately 10 km (6 mi) south east of Euboea, and about 3 km (2 mi) north of Tinos. It is nearly 40 km (25 mi) long, and its greatest breadth is 16 km (10 mi). Its surface is for the most part mountainous, with many fruitful and well-watered valleys. Andros, the capital, on the east coast, contained about 2,000 inhabitants in 1900. The island had about 18,000 inhabitants in (1900). The 1991 census read 8,781. According to the latest Greek census of 2001, the town of Andros still contained 1,508 inhabitants, and the island's total was 10,009. The island is composed of the municipalities of Andros (town) (pop. 4,107), Korthio (pop. 2,547), and Ydrousa (pop. 3,355). Their combined land area is 380 km2 (147 sq mi). The largest towns are Ándros, Gávrio, Bátsi, and Órmos Korthíou.
The island is famous for its Sariza spring at Apoikia where the water comes out of a lionhead.
The north of Andros has a small Arvanite community, and an Arbëresh village in Sicily called Piana degli Albanesi is named 'Hora' in Arbëresh, possibly after the capital of Andros, also called Hora (Χώρα). The name of the island in Arvanitika is Ε̰νdρα, Ëndra.[1]
Palaeopolis, the ancient capital, built into a steep hillside, and its harbor's breakwater can still be seen underwater.

Naxos. Amazing Greek Island + NUDE Beach, Dunes & Graffiti at an Abandoned Hotel
We were delighted (!!) and surprised by the awesome day we spent exploring the cedar forest of Alyko in Naxos, Greece! We weren’t sure what to expect but found some amazing spots along the way during our afternoon.
We encountered many cedar trees in this protected forest along with a few different beaches. Kedros beach was the first and had a whole lot of nudists on it, second was Hawaii Beach which had a few nudists but not many, and lastly was Alyko beach.
In between the beaches we came upon an old abandoned hotel, we explored a bit and found some fantastic graffiti/street art on some of the walls of the building. They were done by well known artist WD who is originally from Bali Indonesia. We also fly our drone (DJI Spark) over the abandoned hotel and the nearby water.
Lastly we take you on a tour of our hotel (nearby Alyko) called Faros Villa, here we fly the drone again and give you a tour of our room.
More info about the hotel and to book:
The Endless Adventure in Athens (featuring us):
The Best Views in Athens:
Naxos:
Naxos is an island in Greece, with 429 square kilometres the biggest of the Cyclades group. It's located right in the centre of the Aegean Sea. Roughly 20,000 people live on the island and it's a popular tourist destination, including some fine beaches and ancient ruins as well.
Naxos has a mild Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny and dry summers and mild but wetter winters. Summers from June to September average around 25-27 degrees Celsius during the day and still above 20 degrees at night. The influence of the sea means that it never feels oppressively hot and nights are kept nice and warm as well.
The cedar forest of Alyko:
The forest is situated in the area Alyko on the southwest side of Naxos Island. It is a great and unique forest in Greece, of Junipers(Cedars), which covers almost the entire sandy peninsula of Kouroupia cape, with an extent of 1000 acres!
Kedros beach:
One of the cleanest and most beautiful beaches in Samos is Kedros. Samos is generally gifted with a wonderful landscape of vast vegetation with tall pine trees and fresh air. It is located 5km northwest of Vathi, the capital of Samos. The beach is mostly unorganized, thus quite isolate and calm. However, the best feature of Kedros is the blue crystal waters that remain clean throughout the whole summer. The white pebbles are dragged through the depths of the sea, but there is sand after some meters.
Alyko beach:
The beach has no tourist infrastructure, the nearest tavern is 1 km away and the nearest mini market is 1.5 km far. Alyko is a beautiful area that consists of a few coves. The south and biggest cove (landmarked by Saint George chapel -on the right side as we approach the beach) is the most popular and best with fine and whitish sand and azure waters. The whole area is ideal for snorkeling. In Alyko there is a cedar trees forest and a small pier where sometimes day cruise small boats stop over.
Faros Villa hotel: Faros Villa small hotel and restaurant consists of 7 unique room types suitable for couples, families and singles. The property is also ideal for family reunions, weddings and several events! The maximum capacity of the Villa is 21 guests! Amorgos - Cyclades
Easternmost Cyclades island, renowned for its monastery hanging on a cliff. Many French tourists, as a famous film was (partly) shot here: The Big Blue, directed by Luc Besson.
