Tour Of Beijing 2013 - Inside Line - What Do Riders Think Of China And What Do The Chinese Think?
The tour of Beijing 2013 is well underway, so we decided to ask some of the pro riders and the locals what they thought of each other!
Follow GCN on YouTube:
Both Alex Dowsett and George Bennett of previous 'rider diaries' fame are taking part in the Beijing race, so we asked them and Christian Meier of Orica-GreenEDGE how they had found the race so far this year.
We also went out and spoke to some of the locals who were waiting on the roadside for the race to pass through, along with our great translator Anne, and found out what the people around Beijing thought of the race and who they were looking out for.
About GCN:
The Global Cycling Network puts you in the centre of the action: from the iconic summit of the Stelvio to the epic trails of Fort William, Scotland, everywhere there is pavé or dirt, world-class racing, and pro riders, we will be there bringing you all the action, essential analysis and unparalleled access every week, every month, and every year.

P.S. You can't see the Great Wall of China from space. Bummer I know, I believed it for so long. Ang cool kaya! But it's a myth as per NASA.

Beijing - City Bicycle Tour (2016)
Tour of Beijing - LIVE - Day 2
Tour of Beijing - LIVE - Day 2
The Tour of Beijing is a partnership between the UCI and the Beijing City Government and covers an initial period of four years from 2011- 2014.
The event is a legacy of the spectacular 2008 Olympic Games, in which the road cycling events provided an unforgettable and spectacular road race through the Chinese capital.
Road cycling began as an organised Sport in 1868. The first World Championships were held in 1893 and it has been a part of the Olympics in the whole of the modern era. Road Cycling has 2 main types of competition -- the Road Race and the Time Trial.
In a Road Race, the riders start together in a bunch. The courses are of varying distances (approx. 260 km for Elite Men and 140km for Elite Women in the UCI World Championships).
Road Races have several different formats. They can be held on a circuit in which riders race over numerous laps like in the UCI Road World Championships; over one-day from one point to another like the Paris to Roubaix Race; or in Stage races in which riders race on consecutive days like the Tour de France.
In the Individual Time Trial the riders set off 1-2 minutes apart, with the reigning Champion leaving last. Without the motivation of other riders around them and the slipstream advantage of bunch riding, the time trial competitor must rely on huge mental strength to keep up the pace and cover the course in the fastest time possible. At the UCI World Championships and Olympic Games, the individual time trial is raced over 40-50 km for Elite Men and 20-30 km for Elite Women.
In a Team Time Trial the principle is the same as for the individual, but teams of between 2 and 10 riders who remain together along the course race this event.
Travelling to The Great Wall of China | Leo Hostel Secret Wall Tour | Beijing.
Taking a break from our teaching life, Apartment #1003 took a quick trip from Wuhan to Beijing to hike The Great Wall also known as The Long Wall, through the Leo Hostel Tour. Take a read for my experience plus some tips!
The first day was filled with exploring the city, bike riding, exploring Tian'anmen Square and indulging in food at The Cheese Cake Factory.
The second day, we had booked a tour through our hostel, The Leo Hostel, for their 'Secret Great Wall Tour'. The cost was 300 RMB inclusive of transport, and lunch. The tour seemed to be offered for other travellers who were not staying at the Leo Hostel too!
The tour started at 7.25am, but we only hit the road just before 8am. Enjoy a nap on the private bus, until you arrive to the Ancient Badaling Wall. The tour allows you 3 hours to hike 7 watch towers, to return at the meeting spot for around 1.30pm. Please note, no actual tour guide or representative of the Hostel hikes with you.
There was literally noone on the wall except for us! All our photos and views were free from other tourists, and everything was quiet.
This hike was quiet difficult, with extreme inclines, and some sections being slippery surfaces. Please don't be a wally and wear comfortable running shoes.
We did this hike on Septemeber 2nd, and it was blue skies of 34 degrees. Bring a minimum of 1.5 Litres of water and a hat and sunblock. It was very hot and made the hike slightly more difficult.
After the hike, you get your fresh Chinese lunch, and then get back on the bus to go back to the Hostel for around 5pm.
If you are looking for a fun, challenging and more importantly tourist free tour...100% would recommend this tour.
Later that evening, we visited the area of Chaoyang District, more specifically the Sanlitun Courtyard to a place called The Taco Bar. If you are looking for a cool, hip and friendly environment to have a GOOD meal, check it out. The area is fresh, and the food was one of the best meals we have had since living in China.

The BEST Section of the Great Wall | Beijing, China
After much discussion with our local guide, we decided to stay away from Badaling & Mutianyu as they're filled with tourists and tainted with taboggans and KFC! After much research, we found the best part of the Great Wall to visit. It was a little trickier to visit, but it was SO worth it. Rarely seeing anyone two hours out of Beijing with the most insane Great Wall views is one of our ALL-TIME favourite experiences.

After my trip to the Forbidden City, I was pretty much tired, irritated and hungry. Luckily, it was lunchtime and the best part about it was that we were walking (I walked for three hour straight). We were taken to our destination via bike and here's my recording of this trip!
