Day 22 - Millionaires pastle
Quinta da Regaleira. Past home to a batshit crazy millionaire. In the beginning, a basic palace was built on the land and owned by some dudes from Porto. But it was sold to Monteiro (the batshit crazy millionaire) in 1892. He basically made the palace grounds huge, and built loads of mementoes to represent his ideologies. This place was MASSIVE. No way he could find enough time to get use out of all this land otherwise. It was all really well done and really pretty. I loved the random, unique flowers and the huge, well-trimmed trees. The huge well stole the show for me though. The fact we could walk down to the bottom and it connected to a huge cave system was surreal. However, too many people knew about this place and I couldn’t move at my own pace at some points because of the crowds. We probably came a bit too late, ah well, still worth the visit.
======
Day 23 - Goodbye Mr Frog
Teaching had finally finished. Time for a hike up to Mouros castle! Holy guacamole this place had the best views in Sintra! Views of the coast, Pena and the other White Castle I don’t know the name of! We are naughty though, we didn’t pay. We waited till the guard wasn’t looking, then legged it through the gate. This place delivered! Fewer people, more views, but… more steps. Claire doesn’t like steps. Or any sort of physical exertion. But it was worth it to see the top. This was an amazing day, but also a sad day. Claire has carried a teddy frog around with her for over a year, to remember a surprise holiday to Blackpool she took me on back in 2016. Mr Frog has now done his last trip with us and has started another journey. When Claire jumped off a wall, the frog fell off her bag. At the time we didn’t know this and we retraced our steps to find him. However, the agonising truth was discovered later as we watched the films from that day and witnessed Mr Frogs final moments. Don’t worry though, Mr Frog will live on forever!

Day 24 - How to hire a bike in Sintra
I was SO excited for this day. I love bike riding, it’s one of my favourite things to do. Paired with my other favourite thing to do, seeing stuff! We woke up with high hopes and headed out bright and early! Which is 10am to us. We walked to the first bike rental place and they only rented out E-Bikes. EH NEH. Next place, only advanced bookings. Then we walked to a lovely little place near the train station called Greenwalk. Two lovely guys running a small business. Cheap too, €20 per day. The guys ran through a map and gave us so much information and worked out a route for us. Go pro set up, puncture kit packed, helmets on. Lets set off! Are you ready, Claire?
Zoom! We both zoomed off and started on what would turn out to be an epic adventure! A truly remarkable experience filled with jaw-dropping views. But first, we had already lost each other after 30 seconds of cycling. As navigator, I cycled ahead and expected Claire to be following, but she decided it was best to stay behind and blame me for being too risky.
Ok, now lets set off for real. She was doing so well. I'm an experienced cycler, so naturally I didn't expect Claire to keep up with me, but she was doing! For the first 5 minutes! We had to walk our bikes up most hills and she was so apologetic each time, it was adorable. I didn’t mind at all though, even when I had to walk two bikes!
First stop, Praia da Adraga. I didn't have this planned, however, the guy in the cycle shop recommended it. Let's give it a shot! 12km from the cycle shop to Adraga. And boy was it worth it! The waves were the biggest I have ever seen. Apparently, it was a surfers beach, so kinda expected I guess. But for your average plucky Brits, we were amazed. On to the next one! Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point of mainland Europe. Views? Amazing. Crowds? Absolute carnage. Meh, it’s alright. Cool to say we’ve been to the most westerly point!
This needs its own paragraph. Ursa beach. Was a spectacle. A true representation of why Nature is the Queen of beauty. Hobbled over the beaten track to this ‘Hidden Beach’. Wham. I was hit by one of the most beautiful views I had ever seen in my life. It was a difficult hike down to the beach and we just didn’t have time to go down. So I decided to run down as fast as I could while Claire stayed at the top. This was so worth it. If you go to Portugal, this is a must.
Now, 14km back to the Bike shop and sunset is 2 hours away. Come on Claire, let's get a move on! In the end, we decided my bike was easier to ride so we swapped, and it was mainly downhill so she did really well. Penedo village has some of the best views in Sintra. Bikes dropped off, I was pretty sure Claire's legs were about to fall off.

PORTUGAL A HUGE WINEHOUSE WAITING YOU
Portugal is a country of strong wine tradition and the excellent quality of its wines is recognised across the world, with numerous awards and distinctions won in international competitions.
To appreciate and know them, nothing like visiting the regions where they are produced, and wine is an excellent excuse to also discover the landscapes, heritage, culture and the people who live here.
It is in the Alto Douro Wine Region, created in 1756, that Port wine has always been intended for export is produced. No wonder that there is a centuries old tradition here of welcoming visitors and sharing with them the best that the region has to offer.
To start with, there’s the superb scenery of the Douro valley, where man built terraces to plant vines on the region’s rugged slopes.
A landscape was produced that was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, populated by farms traditionally linked to wine.
We guide you from Porto, where the Port Wine Lodges are, to discover the region on board of a cruise ship, by bus or even by a romantic train, visiting some of the most iconic sites linked to the production of fine wines from the Douro and Porto.
Our programs include guided visits to the Cellars, followed by Port Wine tasting (White and Special Reserve) and a Fado show, accompanied by Portuguese guitar performers.
GLAMOUR-DMC - A unique opportunity of seeing this spectacular Region from another perspective.

1987 Suzuki GSX400 S “Dented Brat”
1987 Suzuki GSX400 S “Dented Brat”
The Suzuki GSX twin. A plastic fantastic model from the 80s, with a timeless ability to look slightly uncool enough to inhibit a comeback. On the other hand, their ridiculously good engine build quality means that many a GSX has been dusted off, started happily, and ridden into the sunset. So how do you reconcile these two qualities? Capelo’s Garage, based in Oporto, Portugal has managed to do this, by breathing new life into a well parked 1987 GSX400, dubbed ‘the Dented Brat’. Nuno Capelo, the workshop’s founder, has built into it a dark metallic aesthetic that gives a big middle finger to the bike’s polyethylene clad beginnings, and shows the whole bike, scars and all.
A year and a half ago, Nuno was in a small village in Portugal, looking over a freshly washed bike. This is a bike he had only seen in pictures, covered in dust. In person though it was much more impressive. After seeing it start first time, Nuno shook the owner’s hand, and he was the proud owner. First thing to go was all the unnecessary plastic. Blinkers and seat were given the flick, as Nuno envisioned a much darker look for the bike.
Performance wise, the mods are simple but effective. Ditching the airbox, a set of pods have been mounted and the carbs rejetted to suit. At the tail end of the combustion cycle, the original exhaust tips have been replaced with a smaller set but no silencer, which according to Nuno gives a ‘phenomenal sound’. Brakes are standard, the big change being a change to steel lines on the front brakes. The rims are factory GSX, suiting the dark metallic look nicely.
In relation to looks, the bike is definitely not the same as when it rolled off the Suzuki floor 16 years ago. The factory handlebars and mirrors are gone, replaced by Isl branded items. Sitting in place of the stock headlamp is a smaller unit, a light generally found on older 50cc motorcycles that are found in the area. Three different seat designs were considered for the build, first a trimmed cafe racer seat for one. Then a two person flat tracker seat, and finally the one person bobber style seat you see today, mounted on a rear hoop fitted by Nuno.
Catching your eye the minute you look at the bike, is the choice of aesthetic for the fuel tank. Much thought was put into this look, with people trying to influence the builder into painting the tank, but eventually the ‘Dented Brat’ was deemed to show it’s rough inside, including the dents on the tank. The side covers were a choice that was not changed at all from the beginning, they were going to be on the bike no matter what. It was decided that apart from having the rims, frame and a small line on the tank painted to delineate it, the rest of the bike would be left. Or in Nuno’s words: ”leaving the other components with the existing patina and aspect when I bought it”.
From a dusty bike found on the internet in a small village in Portugal, to the badass ride you see before you, I’m sure you can see the quality of the work coming from the Capelo’s bike studio. A warts ‘n’ all homage to everyone who can see the potential in a bike that has been parked, and inspiration to those who haven’t looked. I’ll leave the last words to Nuno Capelos himself: ”The bike is fantastic in terms of riding. Is fairly light and easy to ride. This is not a bike with a lot of speed. That was not the objective. I proposed to build a bike to ride and have fun. And that’s what I have done”.

The History of Portugal by WanderTooth. We spent about 2 months in Portugal and found the stories of its history fascinating. From the first settlers, the Romans, the Moors, all the battles won and lost, Kings, Queens and other nobility and eras of dominance followed by eras of oppression. All of this has shaped the Portuguese people, from the food they eat, to the songs they sing, to they way they interact with others and so on. A visit is highly recommended and there is something for everyone. Landscapes, castles, Roman ruins, Port wine tasting, Fado music, beaches, and more. And being a relatively small country, everything is easily within reach! GO! ENJOY!
