WW II Hero Going on Myrtle Beach Honor Flight Nov. 10.m4v
US Navy Veteran Howard Wollman of Murrells Inlet is going to see the National World War II Memorial in Washington DC in an inaugural flight from Myrtle Beach International Airport, which takes off Wednesday, Nov. 10, just before Veteran's Day, Thursday, Nov. 11.
Wollman, age 88, was a navigator on PT Boat 110, which went down in the Pacific Theater and only he and two others survived. Wollman was awarded the Bronze Star for his bravery, as he saved one shipmate, the PT's engineer.
By contrast, Former President John F. Kennedy's famous PT-109, a sister vessel to Wollman's boat, was cut in half by a Japanese destroyer, but lost only one sailor commanded by then Capt. Kennedy, whose actions to save his surviving crew made him a war hero and this proved helpful in his political career, according to the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.
All 149 seats of the Honor Flight (HF) of South Carolina Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach Chapter are filled for the Nov. 10 takeoff.
Colonel Peter E. Sercer, retired United States Air Force of Columbia is a guardian and supporter. I very much look forward to serving as a guardian for my brother-in-law and World War II aviator Bill Potts of Georgetown on the upcoming Nov. 10 HF, he said. I am very impressed with the great things that are happening under the leadership such a dynamic duo, Flight Coordinators Bert and GG Cassels.
The flight coordinators said there is a waiting list for veterans and one for accompanying guardians, and the organization has raised more than $50,000. They said this fundraising continues with several events in September. God has truly blessed HF, the flight coordinators said. We need to raise approximately $55,000 to $60,000. There is no cost for the veterans for this special charter flight.
A spaghetti dinner fundraiser is from 4:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday Sept. 16, at Applewood House of Pancakes, Pawleys Island by BI-Lo on Highway 17. Tickets are $10 each and include salad, bread, drink and entree. Len and Pat Johnsen, who reside in the International Club, Murrells Inlet, are ticket chairpersons at 651-4368 or PJohnsen@aol.com The HF will receive $5 for each meal sold.
Chick-fil-A near Piggly Wiggly in Murrells Inlet is hosting a fundraiser from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30. All area veterans are invited to come, and the HF will receive 20 per cent of the proceeds. We think veterans would enjoy the 'chix' and it would be like a big party for them, the flight coordinators said. Hope many can come and meet some of the veterans.
PT-109 and PT-110 were 80-foot long and delivered to the Navy in 1942, after being fitted out in the New York Naval Shipyard at Brooklyn. These two were among the largest PT boats operated by the Navy during the war and they had strong wooden hulls of two layers of one-inch mahogany planking. Powered by three 12-cylinder 1,500 horsepower Packard gasoline engines, they could reach as high as 41 knots speed with a crew of three officers and 14 enlisted men. The 56-ton vessel fired torpedoes.
Visiting veterans usually tour the World War II Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, Korean Was Memorial, the Air Force Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
Time is of the essence, according to officials of the HF Network, who say the nation is losing World War II veterans at the rate of approximately 1,000 per day, based on 2008 statistics. Network is continuing help veterans to travel to the nation's capital for free. Next efforts will focus on honoring Korean War and then Vietnam War veterans by bringing them to Washington D.C.
The inaugural HF took place in 2005, when six small planes flew 12 veterans out of Springfield, OH. The program was conceived by Retired Air Force Captain Earl Morse, a physician assistant. After retiring from the Air Force in 1998, he was hired by the Department of Veterans Affairs to work in a small Springfield clinic. He said he wanted to honor veterans he had taken care of for the past 27 years. Morse said the World War II Memorial was completed in 2004 and quickly became the topic of discussion among his World War II veteran patients. But most were in their 80s and lacked the physical and mental wherewithal to complete a trip on their own, he said.

SeeHearSayLearn.com presents a series of videos to get you speaking and learning languages such as English, Spanish / Espanol, French, German, Albanian, Arabic, and more. We are working hard to get our videos uploaded. We provide you with word pronunciations, definitions, translations, stories, rhymes, riddles, jokes, tongue twisters, and anything that will help bridge the gap between your current fluency to your desired proficiency and understanding. Whether you're just learning or trying to bolster your intellectual quotient into a new stratosphere of concise and succinct communications, allocating the proper verbiage could be paramount to illustrating a picture for the recipient or merely shoving drab nondescript sounds of failure down their auditory meatuses. Run on sentence you say? I'd agree. Utilizing big complicated words isn't usually the most effective form of communication, but adapting your language to your recipient will be the most effective way to transfer your thoughts. Having a wide array of tools for each project will allow you to tailor your message for the most effect and efficient use of your time. To write, read, and listen to language takes fewer words than you might imagine. In each language, you could likely get away with understanding a few thousand words and be completely comfortable with many different language settings. Why even a few hundred can get you quite far.
If ever you find any of the words to be inaccurate in any way, which may most often be the pronunciation I want to thank anyone who reaches out to send me a message regarding any errors. I will do my best to read and correct any perceived errors. Be advised that many pronunciation can vary slightly between regions.
My congratulations to anyone broadening their word bank in any language. Science is clear that with more word associations languages become easier to learn and has the potential to be a protective buffer against dementia and Alzheimer's Disease.
