A Living Museum - Maple Creek, Saskatchewan
Maple Creek is a sleepy cowboy town located midway between Regina and Calgary, just south of the Trans-Canada Highway in southwest Saskatchewan. It is situated on the historic main line of the Canadian Pacific Railway and was inhabited in 1882 by the railroad and cattle ranchers and retains all of its 'out-West' Prairies charm. Maple Creek has buildings from various eras' including stone buildings, framed buildings, and the flat front buildings that most people associate with old cowboy towns in the West and it even boasts the oldest surviving storefront in all of Saskatchewan.
When we rolled into town in our GCAT mobile, we immediately felt the history and vibe of being in Cowboy country. The architecture and horse crossing signs were a unique and welcome sight.
One example of history in Maple Creek is the Star Café and Grill which was built in 1898 and constructed using stone from the Cypress Hills. It was refurbished in 2006 and retains its original tin roof, wooden floors, and high ceilings. The menu however is as current as you'll find anywhere in Canada as is their wine list and craft beer selection.
If you want a real taste of Canada's pioneer past and a taste of the West then be sure to put Maple Creek on your map.
It's where past is present!
