Today is an excellent day and I have long wanted to show you one of the pearls of Northern Cyprus, Bellapais Abbey, which is found in Kyrenia.
00:31-01:00 The road from Iskele to here took around an hour. We will park the car at a paid parking space at the walls of the Abbey. A panoramic view opens up to Kyrenia from the viewing platform. The price of parking was around 5 Turkish lira which is around 1 dollar. You can visit the Abbey from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. daily. This is one of the most popular tourist places, which you should definitely visit when you come to visit us on the island.

02:01-02:33 I cannot even use words to tell you the emotions that come over you when you imagine that we are in a place that is more than 900 years old. Pictures from the past immediately come up, like how troubadours climbed the stairs and met the king. Right now, we are entering the church, which is dated back to the 12th century, on which the original paintings are still preserved. The given church is a bright example of the gothic architecture, not only of Northern Cyprus, but of all of the Near East.

The church that we left from is the only building of the 12th century, all the rest are dated at the 14th century and onwards. 03:43-04:06 From the viewing platform opens up an amazing view of Kyrenia. Let's go into the dining room of the Abbey, which is active today since musical concerts are going on inside. Musicians come from all over the world and tickets can be acquired at the ticket window near the entrance.
04:07-04:43 Now we have a view of the roman sarcophaguses, if I'm not mistaken they date back to the 2nd century. There is an amazing molding and monks in white clothes were not afraid to wash their hands before their meal. We are in the dining room, and thanks to the arks there are magnificent acoustics here. A poster is left over from the last concert, and chairs are still set out. Oh, and this balcony, from which the superior read the prayer before the meal.
04:44-05:27 This is a classroom where the monks studied the holy scripture. Unfortunately, only the walls have held up to our time. Now we are on the second floor, I have gone up as high as I could. The stairs are pretty steep and haven't held up very well. A beautiful view of the mountains opens up, but no tour can convey the atmosphere of the magnificent Bellapais Abbey, where even the air is soaked with history. Cyprus Against AIDS
Technical Committee on Health Matters held an event, Cyprus Against AIDS, on 1st December to commemorate the World AIDS Day. During the pre-event activity on 30th November and 1st December, members of the Technical Committee at the Ledra Street/Lokmaci crossing, jointly distributed pins and leaflets in both Greek and Turkish, to raise awareness in the two communities on HIV/AIDS prevention, modes of transmission, and treatment. The conference on 1st December received the participation of 90 Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot medical doctors. The programme included an introductory presentation from the two team leaders of the Technical Committee and two presentations from Greek Cypriot and Turksih Cypriot doctors on HIV/AIDS in Cyprus. Two keynote speakers from USAID and the World Health Organisation (WHO) presented the current global trends and developments on HIV/AIDS diagnosis and treatment and WHO recommendations on HIV treatment, followed by active discussions. This was the great opportunity for Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot medical doctors to share views and experiences on specific issues of common interest.
Our Shared Heritage: Rebuilding Trust in Cyprus
Ali Tuncay and Takis Hadjidemetriou are two of ten (5 Greek Cypriot and 5 Turkish Cypriot) custodians of cultural heritage in Cyprus.
Appointed by their respective leaders in 2008 as representatives of the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, their role is to watch over the proper safeguard and conservation of Cyprus’ rich historical and archaeological heritage. Not an easy task considered the more than 2300 immovable cultural heritage sites that Phoenicians, Venetians, Lusignans and Ottomans – among others - have left on the island as legacy of their presence.
UNDP’s assistance to the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage started in 2009 when it was requested by the European Commission to support a Study of Cultural Heritage in Cyprus. The study laid the foundation for a more active role of cultural heritage in the on-going peace and confidence building process on the island.
Thanks to the discrete work of people like Ali and Takis, who for their efforts were awarded in 2015 the European Citizens Prize, Cypriot cultural heritage has finally found in the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage a space where practical aspects of preservation are considered in a non-political manner.
