Buyuk Han in Nicosia, Cyprus
Büyük Han or is the largest caravansarai on the island of Cyprus and is considered to be one of the finest buildings on the island. Located in the capital of Cyprus, it was built by the Ottomans in 1572, the year after they had seized Cyprus from the Venetians. In the centre of the open courtyard is a mosque with a fountain for pre-prayer ablutions. It became the first city prison under British administration. After spending most of the 1990s being restored, the inn has been revived as a thriving arts centre, consisting of several galleries and workshops. There are also several courtyard cafes and souvenir shops.
One of the most important architectural works of the Ottoman period, the Buyuk Han (The Great Inn) is located in the traditional market centre within the City Walls. .
The Han, which was built to provide accommodation for travellers from Anatolia and other parts of Cyprus was originally named Alanyalilar's Han. Later when a new inn, the Kumarcilar Han (Gamblers' Inn) was built nearby in the 17th century, as a result of the comparison made by the public between the two Hans, it was referred to as the Buyuk Han (Big Inn or Great Inn). The Han is similar to all the other Hans which can be found in the city centres of various Anatolian cities, although the Buyuk Han is unusual in having two entrances. It is worth noting, however, that there is a specially strong resemblance between the Buyuk Han and the Koza (Cacoon) Han in Bursa, Turkey which was built around 1490.
Externally, the Han resembles a fortress. Indeed during the old colonial days, the British used the Han as Nicosia Central Prison. The windows of Hans were always high up, partially to deter marauders who saw the rich merchants staying at the Han as a sources of easy riches, and partially because glass was very expensive.
The square planned, two storey Buyuk Han consists of 68 rooms which open to the vaulted galleries surrounding a square planned inner courtyard and 10 shops which open to the outside of the Han. An Ottoman Mesjid stands on marble piers, with a fountain beneath it in the centre of the courtyard.
The Buyuk Han has two entrances, east and west. The rooms on the ground floor each have a low-arched door, an arched window and a hearth. These rooms were originally used as shops, store rooms and offices. At the east side of the Han, to the left of the entrance there is a groin vaulted gallery, and to the right, a barrel vaulted one.
Two symmetrical stone stairways at the northwest and southeast corners of the courtyard lead to the upper floor. Here the rooms, which were originally the bedrooms of the Han, have low-arched doors with machicolations on top. There are also windows facing the outside of the Han with loopholes above, hearths with octagonal chimneys, and niches. The room which falls on top of the main entrance is larger than the rest, and its door when opened, extends all the way to the gallery.
Layers of hewn stone form the outer and inner walls of the Han. On the walls there are stone rainspouts. The building is supported by two buttresses on each of the four corners. On top of the barrel vaulted roof there are hexagonal chimneys with wedge-shaped covers indicating the hearths.
From 1893 to 1961, the Han was used as a hostel for destitute families. Restoration began in 1963. The south colonnade was completely demolished and the south west corner rebuilt without any regard to the style of the original. After the events of 1963, restoration was halted for a number of years. However, after extensive renovations which took ten years, the Han was re-opened in it's original style to visitors in 2002, and is now one of the Island's finest buildings.
Beside the locals, Buyuk Han plays host to many tourists in Nicosia. Not only the cafes. but also various shops serve the visitors. Shawls, traditional handicrafts, paintings, pottery and carvings are among the many things on offer.
There are many social activities at Buyuk Han, either in daytime or at night. You can sip home made wine while listening to live music, you can listen to classical music within a concert in an authentic atmosphere, or even participate in a traditional wedding ceremony. There are folklore dance shows, piano recitals, drama shows and many others within the walls.

Cyprus Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Cyprus.
Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, with a long history and rich cultural heritage. Lefkosia, or, Nicosia, is the capital with an almost circular old town that is completely surrounded by walls from the Venetian period. Fammagusta Gate is one of the town’s original three gates which leads to the Tacht El-Kala district with its many narrow alleys, small buildings and handicraft studios. Nicosia’s largest church is the Phaneromeni Church and its elegant Venetian bell tower. Next to it, one of the town’s smallest mosques and the prosaic construction of the modern Moronite Church beyond Paphos Gate that leads out of the historic centre. The port of Larnaca is considered to be the gateway to the island. A well-renovated Turkish fortress was originally built to defend the city and it was subsequently used as a prison. Close to Larnaca is a huge salt lake which, in winter, is populated by hundreds of pink flamingos. The mountain village of Lefkara is situated within the foothills of the Troodos Mountains. Narrow cobbled alleys separate the stately buildings of solid stone blocks with ornate door frames and wrought iron balconies. The Church of the Archangel Michael, located in the centre, contains various wall paintings that date back to the twelfth century. The ‘islands of the gods’ resembles a magnificent picture book, a melting pot of various influences at the intersection of both Orient and Occident. Cyprus is synonymous with myth, legend, treasures, culture and very large doses of sunshine!

Bandabuliya (Old Market) / Belediye Pazari / Bazaar - Cultural Events ~ Cyprus
From October to December 2012! Everyday at BANDABULIYA (Old Market) in the northern part of Nicosia!
The European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme - Partnership for the Future (UNDP-PFF) in collaboration with the Bandabuliya Management are pleased to present the Bandabuliya Cultural Programme for October, November and December 2012.
Starting this Friday October 05th until end of December 2012, the Bandabuliya (Old Market) in the northern part of Nicosia, will host a series of workshops, exhibitions and competitions that will bring together Cypriot non-profit institutions as well as private individuals. These activities are financed by the European Union and supported by UNDP Partnership for the Future.
The programme of activities includes: a monthly crafts market (every second Saturday of the month), daily handicrafts and embroideries workshops, olive oil soap laboratories, Master Chef cooking competition, clay sculptures workshops, a science festival and art workshops for children, and different Bandabuliya media initiatives!
The detailed calendar of activities will be available soon on UNDP-PFF website undp-pff.org and Facebook page:
The cultural programme will provide you with an opportunity to rediscover Cypriots handicrafts traditions, cultural/culinary tradition, and re-create moments of fun and art-sharing for children, youth and persons with disabilities at the Bandabuliya.
With the launch of this cultural programme, we aim to create a momentum towards the complete rehabilitation of the renovated market into the cultural, economic and social life of Nicosia and of its residents. These activities aim to bring Cypriots back to Bandabuliya and to the Selimiye area, and make Cypriots re-discover and re-value their urban cultural heritage -- Tiziana Zennaro, UNDP-PFF.
The activities were selected amongst the applications received last August through the Bandabuliya Fund for cultural and community activities in Bandabuliya. The Fund is one of the activities foreseen within the Upgrading of local and urban infrastructure project in order to support the revitalization of the walled city of Nicosia.
All activities are financed by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community and supported by UNDP Partnership for the Future.
History:
During the Lusignan and Venetian period, the area of St Sophia (Selimiye) was the main religious and trade centre of Nicosia. This continued under the OttomansTurkish Cypriots, who started using the Cathedral as a mosque. Selimiye was the meeting point for the citizens of Nicosia, especially on Fridays, to coincide with Friday prayers.
St Nicholas Church (Bedestan) served as a market where mostly textiles were sold. Because of population growth, and because people from all over Cyprus came to the city to sell their goods, new buildings were built around the Bedestan, including the Hans where tradesmen could stay.
In the 1800s, the weekly market place was turned into a permanent market place, and this continued till the Bandabuliya was built.
Construction of the Bandabuliya started in 1930, and it was opened two years later in 1932. The bazaar housed everything from greengrocers to butchers and fishmongers.
Population increase, and the movement towards the outskirts of Nicosia, forced shopping centres to be closer to the new settlement areas. The closure of roads leading to Turkish Cypriot parts of the city in 1958, lead to a further decline.
Recent years have seen a revival of trade, and this historic bazaar is still a superb market for fresh vegetables and meat, as well as Turkish Cypriots souvenirs. It as mainly frequented by local shoppers, so any visitor can get a taste of shopping in the old city.
In 2010, the Bandabuliya closed for restoration, and re-opened in the Spring of 2012. Sadly the refurbishment has meant that all the character of the old market has been lost. Instead of a Middle East bazaar, we now have the feel of a 1960s English provincial indoor market, that a mediocre architect would be embarrassed to put his name to! Hopefully some of the character will eventually return.

NICOSIA OLD CITY
With its 5000 yearlong history, walking is the ideal way to get a feel for the character, history and continual cultural development of Lefkosia (Nicosia). Despite its historical difficulties, Nicosia is still the heart of Cyprus. This can be seen through the ongoing efforts to revitalize the old city, especially through the Nicosia Master Plan, executed under the auspices of the United Nations. Walking through Laiki Geitonia, you will see some remarkable examples of traditional urban architecture, such as the Leventis Municipal Museum and small art workshops. Visit Trypiotis Church (1695), the Museum of the History of Cypriot Coinage, and The Museum of George and Nefeli Giabra Pierides Collection of the Bank of Cyprus. Phaneromeni Church is the biggest church in the walled city, and right across is the Cross of Missirikos, a medieval church with gothic Italian elements that was converted into Araplar Mosque in 1571.
At the heart of the inner wall city is the Omerie Area with the Omerie Mosque (once a 14th century Medieval Church dedicated to St. Mary of the Augustines), and the restored Turkish Baths, which won a EUROPA NOSTRA prize. An archaeological site with finds from the Byzantine and Medieval times lies next to the Municipal Arts Centre and the old inns. The 13th century church / 16th century Latin Cathedral of Agia Sofia, and the Selimiye Mosque, can be seen from a distance between the Green line and Turkish-occupied Nicosia.
In Chrysaliniotissa neighbourhood, the renovated houses are once again inhabited after lying derelict following the Turkish invasion of 1974. The most important building is the 18th century Archontiko Odou Axiotheas, which is now used by the University of Cyprus as a Cultural Centre. The 10th century Church of Chrysaliniotssa is next, followed by the Multi-Crafts Centre, which makes and sells contemporary handicrafts. At Ermou Street, you can visit the Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) with over 1000 paintings by visitors to Cyprus in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The dead-end of Ermou Street is part of the Green Line (buffer zone), which is controlled by the UN. The religious and cultural centre of the city is Archbishop Kyprianos Square with the Cathedral of St. John, the Folk Art Museum and the Cultural Foundation of Archbishop Makarios the III with its Byzantine Museum. The Folk Art Museum, the Pan Cyprian Gymnasium Museums, and the Museum of National Struggle, offer another aspect of Cypriot culture and history.
From Famagusta Gate Cultural Centre, take a walk on top of the 16th century Venetian walls to see the moat and the modern city outside the walls. At Podocatoro Bastion you will see the Statue of Liberty, representing the Cypriot struggle against British rule (1955-1959). At the neighbourhood of Agios Antonios, visit the Mansion House of the Dragoman, Hadjigeorgakis Cornesios (18th century), which now houses the ethnological museum of the city.
An open-air market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday at Constanza Bastion, next to Bayraktar Mosque. The commercial streets of Onasagoras and Ledra offer shops, restaurants, cafeterias and ice cream kiosks, whilst the Ledra Observatory Museum on the 11th floor of the Shacolas Tower building (in Ledra Street), offers an unobstructed view of the entire city.
