NICOSIA | Lefkosia | Divided Capital of CYPRUS
Nicosia, also known as Lefkosia, is the last divided capital in the world. It is a historical city with walled old town and gorgeous landmarks, but brutally split in two with a border zone, a wall that symbolizes the crisis that still today keeps the two sides of Cyprus apart. One half of the capital belongs to the Republic of Cyprus, another to the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. To build a picture of the complex and jammed situation, let’s take a short look to the history of the island first.

The medieval old city of Nicosia is circulated by the Old City Walls. It has seen the rise and fall of several civilizations, and has footprints from the Lusignan, Venetian, Ottoman and British periods.
The Old Town is full of historical treasures, most of them well preserved. It has a glorious face of a city from the Middle Ages, but it also has the face of the war; the Green Line divides also the walled old town in two parts, and the border zone itself is a confusing and sad sight. It is a line of abandoned buildings, that can be partly on one side, partly another, with bullet holes in the walls. It is a line with barricades, barbed wires, guards and surveillance systems. It surely makes Nicosia a unique capital.

Никоси́я (греч. Λευκωσία — Лефкоси́я; тур. Lefkoşa — Ле́фкоша) — столица Республики Кипр и частично признанной Турецкой Республики Северного Кипра. Расположена в центральной части острова Кипр. 276 тыс. жителей (2012). Международный аэропорт закрыт с 1974 года и здесь располагается штаб миротворческих сил ООН.
По данным на конец 2004 года к югу от Зелёной линии (греческая часть города) население составляет около 270 тыс. жителей, к северу (турецкая часть) 84 893 жителя.
Никосия — торговый и промышленный центр. В городе — 2 современных торговых комплекса, магазины, рестораны, развлекательные комплексы. В городе развито текстильное, кожевенное, гончарное производство, производство пластмассы и другой продукции, пищевая промышленность. Рядом находятся медные шахты. В Никосии — Университет Кипра и 5 других университетов.

Cyprus, officially the Republic of Cyprus, is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean and the third largest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean, located south of Turkey.
The Republic of Cyprus has de jure sovereignty over the entire island, including its territorial waters and exclusive economic zone, with the exception of the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, which remain under British control. However, the Republic of Cyprus is de facto partitioned into two main parts: the area under the effective control of the Republic, located in the south and west, and comprising about 59% of the island's area; and the north, administered by the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, covering about 36% of the island's area. Another nearly 4% of the island's area is covered by the UN buffer zone. The international community considers the northern part of the island as territory of the Republic of Cyprus occupied by Turkish forces. The occupation is viewed as illegal under international law, amounting to illegal occupation of EU territory since Cyprus became a member of the European Union.

AGORA PROJECT is the creative collaboration of a group of people from a variety of backgrounds making the Old Municipal Market of Nicosia burst with life and energy again!
AGORA PROJECT is temporarily hosting the studios and shops of artists and craftmakers showcasing their artwork or handmade artisan creations. You can also find gift shops, second-hand shops with a selected variety of vintage clothes or amazing eco-friendly reused and upcycled products or art pieces. The old fishmarket has been transformed to beautiful botanical and herbal garden and right next door is the open library of Agora where visitors can enjoy a good read. AGORA is also hosting weekly dance, music or performance workshops bringing people together in a spirit of inclusiveness, as well as other events with a cultural and educational impact.
