Thanks to the VAE (vlo assistance lectrique), the power assisted bike, you can move in a different way: you pollute less, you bother other people less since there is absolutely no noise, and it's also very interesting budget-wise.
7. Wideshot of electric bikes
8. SOUNDBITE (French), Franois Lombard, owner of the Novlo shop
When you know that one kilowatt is costing 0.7 cents of euro, today with 1 euros you can make 1500km, it means that on an everyday basis, it's quite cheap. Sure there is an investment to make to start with but, there is no need for insurance, no need for a registered plate and definitely a lot less fines.
9. Midshot of bicycle wheels
10. Mid shot of an electric tricycle
11. Wideshot of the building of the Espace mobilits Electriques-EME set up by EDF and the city of Paris
12. Midshot of people entering inside the EME

16. SOUNDBITE (French), Sbastien Grajezyk, owner of E-Nov
Well the electric bike, it's a bit special (for me), because it all started about five years ago, in China, during a trip. We came across some people, Chinese people, who were riding on weird machines, with pedals, and who were going forward with actually pedalling -because Chinese regulations are actually a little bit different. And so we thought, hey it's strange, there is no noise, no smell, what is it: well it was simply the electric bike.
17. Midshot of the bike and the battery bein put back
UPSOUND (Sbastien Grajezyk, off camera): so I put it back!
18. SOUNDBITE (Frengh), Sbastien Grajezyk, showing the bicycle screen with different battery use/road options
I move it here, on the option flat road, and then I move it again, to the option uphill, very simply, and then I put it on off again.
20. Close up of the screen
21. Midshot of the Gitane electric bike
Paris - August 1st, 2008

23. Midshot of Sophie Nenner, shop owner showing a brochure to her customers
24. Close up of the bicycle brochure
25. SOUNDBITE (French), Martine Yann, customer
I'm going to the countryside and I would like to do more bicycling rather than driving a car, so I will use preferably a bicycle and, actually, an electric bicycle, to make it a little bit less difficult for me, espcially since I'm reaching an advanced age.
26. Midshot of Martine Yann and her son checking out bicycles
27. SOUNDBITE (French), Sophie Nenner, owner of the Vlo Electro shop
Three years ago, it was 'but an electric bike, what is it? How does it work? I didn't know there was such a thing!, etc.' Wheareas today, people come inside the shop knowing exactly what it is and they just need advice to find out which bicycle they need to choose for themselves.
28. Wideshot of a series of bikes and a wall covered with all sorts of bags
29. Mid shot of a bag
30. SOUNDBITE (French), Sophie Nenner, owner of the Vlo Electro shop
We really have all sorts of people coming in. There are people who work - 80% are people who use this vehicule to go to work- and we have a lot of people who transport children.
31. Midshot of children seats for bikes
33. SOUNDBITE (English), Susan Huisberts, Dutch tourist

French bicycle tour Part 3
This is the raw footage of the 700-mile Voie de la liberté (Liberty Trail) bicycle tour through France in 1989, which followed the path Gen. Patton took during the liberation of France during WWII. It started on the coast in Cherbourg, then went across the French countryside, up through Luxembourg, then ended at Bastogne, Belgium. I myself rode in this and finished it. When you watch this video, you will feel like you are right there with them, cycling along with them. For those who know the language, there is plenty of French to translate. The riders consisted of Americans, French, Canadians, Belgians and others. (If you see a group of old men riding together, those are the French. Their elderly are pretty healthy!) This was a very tiring trip - we rode 130 miles or more per day, riding from sunup to sunset, for a whole week. We were pretty darn sore! But the French countryside was beautiful. It's so green and flat!
